This week's song of the week is "Abuti Thabiso", a hit from Dr Steve Kekana's album, Thapelo (1980). Self- written, It is a plea to the elder brother to support the family as the father has passed on.

In African culture it is his duty to take over the father's responsibilities and assist his mother in bringing up his siblings. Seemingly, the brother has turned his back on the family by staying far away in the big cities. Family politics!

My song of the week is "I'm In Love With a DJ" from Yvonne Chakachaka 's album, I'm Burning Up (1986).

On a rainy day a young lass is home alone listening to the radio. The conducive weather plays with her mind as she imagines herself in the arms of the smooth- talking disc jockey, Leeroy Stone of Rainbow Station KMOD FM95 Richardstown, Arkansas. The deejay (played by Danny Bridgens) invites calls from lonely young ladies and her fantasy pushes her to make the move and express her feelings towards the jock.

Sounds familiar? Theater of the mind!

As we remember the departure of Hugh Masekela this week (23 January 2018), my song of the week is "Change" from his album, Time (2002) which he co-wrote with Blondie Makhene and Mbongeni Ngema.

It is addressing the negative image of Africa due to its predominantly dictatorial leadership tendencies. The subsequent coups and civil wars create poverty, hunger and starvation. The West pretends to mediate and lend aid to war-ravaged countries while fuelling the wars by selling them weapons. Masekela names some of the main culprits and requests for them to give way to new leaders.

Elections are meant to change leaders to avoid overstaying their welcome.

My song of the week is "Mme Matshidiso", a track from Mpharanyana and The Peddlers' 1979 album, Hela Ngwanana.

Composed by Mac Mathunjwa and Themba Mokoena during the disco music era, it is about a woman whose daughter's love affair ended but she continued spreading lies about her engagement to the young man. He is complaining to the woman as the rumors she spreads make it difficult for him to move on. Every girl he approaches knows about his forthcoming marriage to her daughter, Matshidiso. Desperation and jeopardy!

This week's song of the week is "Hapo Zamani", from Miriam Makeba's 1967 album, Pata Pata. Written by Zimbabwe born musician Dorothy Masuka, it was inspired by the pain and frustration of living in exile.

Due to colonisation, oppression and discrimination she lived in various countries of the world. In fact, many Africans went into exile to fight the system from outside. That homeless experience was disruptive and lonely, but they kept the freedom flame burning and exposed the brutality of the System to the world.

This week, the song of the week is "To All The Girls I've Loved Before", a smooth ballad by Spanish singer, Julio Iglesias. Originally composed by Albert Hammond and Hal David, it was popularized by the duet of Julio Iglesias and Willie Nelson on the latter 's album,1100 Bel Air Place (1984).

It is about a man who looked back and reminisced about the journey of his love life and the ladies who crossed his path and made it worthwhile. Some are married and some have passed on, but they all enriched his love and life experience. Salute!

My song of the week is "Loliwe", the title track of Zahara's 2011 debut album.

Composed by Bulelwa Mkutukana herself, it was inspired by the movement of the passenger train as it arrived at the station. In the song it brings joy to a lonely woman whose husband is returning home from the big cities after a long time. She's been praying for his safe return and her prayers are answered.

In South African history the train was enabler of the migratory labour system. It carried men from the rural areas to the golden mines in the Reef. Hugh Masekela, Welkom Duru, Bayete, Bholoja and Mbongeni Ngema also wrote about it in different contexts while one of our country's music supergroup was named Stimela. It was the symbol of the movement of our people.

My song of the week is "It Started With a Kiss", a chartbuster by British soul group, Hot Chocolate from their album, Mystery (1982). Written by Jamaica-born front man Lester Errol Brown, it was inspired by his crush on a little girl at the tender age of 9. He never forgot their first kiss but to his disappointment, the girl outgrew the crush.

Do you remember your first love? Was it love at first sight?

My song of the week is "Long Distance Love", from Little Feat's album titled, The Last Record Album (1975).

The band 's founder and lead vocalist, Lowell George wrote the song out of the experience of a deep longing for a far away lover. Missing her, the only contact is the telephone and a prayer, especially if the parting was ugly.

Many people can relate to the loneliness, anxiety and agony of such situations. Jackson Browne did a piano live version of the song.

My song of the week is ABC (Insimbi), a 1983 song by Muntu. Written by Condry Ziqubu himself, it is a call to parents to send their children to school for a better future. It was released seven years after the Soweto uprising as many youngsters had lost confidence in the education system. The problem was not education but the system.

Without education there is no other option to prepare for the future. Even now!

My song of the week is "I am...I Said", from Neil Diamond's album, Stones (1971). Written by Leslie himself, it is about the frustration experienced by migrant labourers who spend most of their lives in the big cities working for their families yet deep down in their hearts missing home. He loved the city life of Los Angeles yet missed his place of birth, Brooklyn in New York.

Still on the unfortunate subject of forced removals of the past, I revisit Strike Vilakazi's hit, Meadowlands (1956). Though the regime of the time welcomed it as a promotional song for the removals from Sophiatown to Meadowlands, it was in fact a protest against the relocation. It was popularized by artists like Nancy Jacobs and Her Sisters, Dorothy Masuka, Miriam Makeba, Sibongile Khumalo and others. Over the years it remains a stubborn anti-removals anthem.

My song of the week is "Mannenberg", an instrumental jazz track by master pianist, Abdullah Ibrahim.
