4 years ago The Jewish News and Jewish Chronicle (The two leading UK Jewish newspapers) went into liquidation on the same day. I remember it well, during the first lockdown. I was awake all night thinking the writing's been on the wall for years and years and there must be a better way for younger people to engage with modern Jewish content. Very few people under the age of 60 are reading Jewish newspapers. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-52215353

I created Joice (Jewish Voice) which moves the dial from local Jewish stories to user generated global stories and opinions. We have built a brand that resonates with people around the world, giving power to the people. We curate and amplify diverse Jewish stories proving we aren't defined by our history.

It was clear that people with more money than sense would buy the two leading Jewish newspapers out of liquidation, as it comes with power and legacy. However with newspaper readerships decreasing and advertisers not spending money on this media format, it was clear that this isn't sustainable.

Today we read that from the end of October 2024, The Jewish News will be moving from a weekly newspaper to a Bi-monthly Print Magazine. In addition The Jewish Chronicle have been in the national press this week with hugely damaging accusations that many articles containing misinformation have been published by a journalist of theirs leading others in the organisation quitting their jobs. https://www.theguardian.com/media/2024/sep/15/columnists-quit-jewish-chronicle-gaza-conflict-stories

The integrity and credibility leaves a worrying future of Jewish news and content in the UK.

Many of us have the same vision and goals and I strongly believe we are better together. By focusing on positive stories, we can show the world that our differences unite us.

How a Hasidic wedding in the UAE went viral

When Levi Duchman and Lea Hadad, members of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement, were married in front of more than 1,500 guests at the Hilton Abu Dhabi Yas Island hotel on Sept. 14, there was one moment so notable that it went viral on Instagram: a video of the Hasidic groom dancing joyously with his friend, Abdalla Almaazmi, along with other Muslim and Jewish men.

Happy 100th birthday to this queen! Joyce Wagner (Jetka Witkowski) is a Holocaust survivor, the only survivor of 9 brothers and sisters, her parents and grandparents.

Originally from Radziejow, Poland, she was 18 at the start of WWll. Joyce spent 2 horrific years in Auschwitz-Birkenau and also survived the death march. She met her late husband Michael in Bergen-Belson DP camp and after marrying, they had their first child, a son Harold, in the DP camp. They were able to come to the US in 1949 where Joyce and Michael became successful entrepreneurs in the grocery business after settling in Milwaukee. They went on to have two more children, daughters Gilda and Sally.

Today she turns 100 years old! Her entire family got together this weekend in Chicago to celebrate Joyce and to remind ourselves that we are living proof of Hitler’s failure!

The Jewish community of the Cayman Islands emerged in the 1970’s. Despite its predominantly Protestant population, the small Jewish community of the Cayman Islands grew, but there was no synagogue to attend.

George Walton, a native of Cayman Brac, traveled the world with his wife, Lynn, an Ashkenazi Jew from Brooklyn. After retirement, the two returned to the small island of Cayman Brac and opened a bed and breakfast. George was eager for his wife to have a spiritual home on the island, so in 2002, he built her a synagogue in their garden.

Temple Beth Shalom is a beautiful and humble synagogue with mahogany doors and a domed ceiling, adorned with 12 lanterns, representing the 12 tribes. Over time, the couple have collected Jewish artifacts from all over the world for its decor.

The charming synagogue that was once built as a present for a wife is now a destination for Jews who wish to travel to the Cayman Islands.
