Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the risks of studying in person at Tufts University have never been more dire. For the past two years, a sense of foreboding has undeniably permeated the minds of Tufts’ students and the campus itself, indicative of the insecurities experienced by many as the current pandemic rages on. These anxieties, fears and concerns are now being represented in the Tufts administration’s latest artistic endeavor, The Mods (2020–), which was recently installed during summer 2020 on the Vouté Tennis Courts and Fletcher parking lot....

African representation in luxury fashion isn't rife. Usually, when we refer to African designers, there's an expectation of seeing some sort of identifiable cloth distinct to one nation or tribe. However, after a rocky relationship with the global fashion industry that has been marred with cultural exploitation amongst many things, we are finally seeing African bred designers garnering international attention and acclaim they rightfully deserve....

A timeless battle, the American sportswear giant Nike and the historic German brand adidas have dominated the sneaker market for decades. Both rooted in footwear, Nike and adidas generated more than 35% of revenue in 2021 for the activewear industry. Both brands began by developing sports shoes for athletes before building lifestyle arms that cater to the everyday person, cementing the two companies as the go-to for the right product at the right time for the right price....

Doused in vibrant watercolor lights, Still Woozy transformed The Warfield into a punch-drunk ode to summer — the kind of balmy respite swollen from sap and liquid smooth. Still Woozy, an alias for Oakland local Sven Eric Gamsky, returned to the Bay Area to promote his debut album If This Isn’t Nice, I Don’t Know What Is. The record straddles intimacy and easy listening, a bevy of buoyant tracks buffeted by gentle synths and smooth basslines....

Winter can often be dark, windy and cold. However, it is during these gloomy months that our brightest and sweetest citrus fruits flourish. Across North America, ruby grapefruits, navel oranges, tangerines, kumquats, lemons, mandarins, satsumas and pomelos reach their peak during the winter. Stretched along the Saturday Downtown Berkeley Farmers’ Market, several ranches and farms line the street with their bright citrus fruits on display....

The Boy Who Lived may never die. The cultural zeitgeist has venerated “Harry Potter” to an unmatched status after seven books, eight movies, international theme parks and a score anniversary special on HBO Max. While the series’ original author, J.K. Rowling, busies herself with transphobic Twitter tirades, fans of the story have transfigured “Harry Potter” into a somewhat volatile entity, a piece of cultural currency to endure in collective, fan-controlled possession....

“I talk a lot about p**p and p**ping in general on this album,” Paul Van Haver laughingly told The Guardian. “I wanted to give another point of view.” The Belgian-born Francophone and singer-songwriter — known on the international stage as Stromae — doesn’t exaggerate: Scatological lyrics are rampant on Multitude, which was released March 4. In it, f***s becomes poetically symbolic within Stromae’s lyrical investigations of fatherhood, maturation and depression, each explored with poignancy and sincerity....

“She’s so cute,” a concertgoer remarked from the buzzing crowd. Standing center stage with her maroon leather jacket and glossy black hair, Wallice excitedly shouted out her cousins, attempting to make out their faces in the audience. As she spoke, her voice delicately lilted through the upper octaves, her speech ringing like a song. Opening for Still Woozy’s If This Isn’t Nice Tour, Wallice Hana Watanabe (who performs mononymously as Wallice) swiftly and skillfully sculpts her space in the indie rock scene....

Fresh takes on the horrors of modern romance are few and far between. Romantic comedies abound, highlighting momentous meetings and grandiose gestures. However, Mimi Cave’s directorial debut, “Fresh,” subverts the genre of the romantic comedy, a meet-cute turned meat-cute — a gruesome exploration of the physical and emotional degradation of a woman bound to a cannibal. “This was a very different telling of a meeting between two people that starts off one way and obviously becomes something else,” Sebastian Stan said in a roundtable interview with The Daily Californian....

This past fall, I moved into Cloyne Court, one of the biggest Berkeley co-ops. The Berkeley Student Cooperative is a series of 17 houses on campus designed to provide housing for low-income Bay Area students, each with a specific theme and living environment. If something a student learns in her class helps to illuminate their own lived experiences, Crystal Chang will consider it a job well done. That job, however, does not come without sacrifice. Chang is a continuing lecturer in the Interdisciplinary Social Science Programs at UC Berkeley. More specifically, she teaches courses in the political economy and global studies majors. Being a continuing lecturer means Chang has completed the equivalent of 12 semesters of lecturing in the same department and an excellence review....

There’s a particular picture I’ve always had in my head: It’s fuzzy, overexposed and transient, but it’s something that’s stuck with me for quite some time. It’s a picture of Valentine’s Day, the one that doesn’t exist where I’m from. It’s Westernized and steeped in all of the cliches that permeate the holiday. Will I let someone hex the rug?” Questions such as these project onto a large white screen, a faint click signaling the next at a rate of 33 questions per minute. In a tweet that arguably casts Charli XCX’s established anti-music industry polemic in dubious light, the hyperpop mainstay made transparent her intentions to release more commercially palatable music in the hopes that it would supplant a “platform to bring more avant garde music to the mainstream.” Caroline Polachek, despite being a close friend and frequent collaborator of Charli XCX, subverts her more recent mainstream success — earlier this month she began touring with Dua Lipa — in favor of experimentalism....

Two n**e figures stand facing forward, one in front of the other, looking like replicas of the same body entangled in androgynous characteristics that resist gender stereotypes: delicate fingers, broad chests and shaved heads. The back figure wraps their arms around the other, strumming the banjo that forms their perfectly rounded stomach, materializing the painting’s title “Musical Bodies: Banjo.” Wilson Shieh’s painting is just one of 16 artworks on display at “Seeing Gender,” the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco’s first exhibition with a focus on gender and sexuality....

Fate doesn’t always have to make a show of itself. Sometimes, what makes the most sense simply falls into place. For the cast of Amazon Prime’s “I Want You Back,” a new rom-com that seems to reject any notion of fated love, the sentiment rings true. Most of the cast hadn’t met before the day of the shoot and others only in passing; yet, once the cameras began to roll under the guidance of director Jason Orley, the stars (of both the heavens and Hollywood) truly aligned....

For many UC Berkeley students, the names of local restaurants and storefronts roll off of the tongue like second homes. Black fills your immediate vision, the entrance spanned by solid painted walls. Visual sensory deprivation forces attendees to hone in on the soundscape that conflates natural and primal sounds, bending time and space into meaningless constructs. This is the mark of a new era. Until Feb. 27, the Oakland Museum of Contemporary Art, or OMCA, is presenting a special exhibit titled “Mothership: Voyage into Afrofuturism.” Intent on not only uplifting Black American communities as leaders of global society but also glorifying the beauty of everyday traditions, the exhibit excels in reimagining the contemporary world where Black people are pioneers in technology and culture....
