Russia and China have signed one of the largest contracts in the history of their trading relationship, worth almost 2.5 trillion rubles (around $26 billion). The contract is for 70 million tons of grain, legumes, and oilseeds over 12 years and is expected to launch soon, with an ‘intergovernmental agreement on the initiative’ due to be signed in the coming months.

Karen Ovsepyan, leader of the New Overland Grain Corridor initiative, said of the deal, ‘We are definitely more than replacing the lost volumes of Ukrainian exports thanks to Siberia and the Far East,’ noting that the initiative will help normalize the export structure within the Belt and Road framework.

Nor is Mossad as omniscient as its admirers seem to think. Just as R&AW spends more time watching Pakistan than any other country, the Israeli secret services concentrate on Gaza, the West Bank and Hamas. And yet they were taken totally by surprise when Hamas launched its murderous attack.

So, despite Israel’s displays of military power and covert action, what security it now enjoys comes mainly from the diplomatic agreements it has struck with its Arab neighbours and from the support of the West.

It now faces an enemy it cannot defeat militarily without extracting a massive cost from civilians and losing the support of the world."

As Joe Biden gave an address to the people of Israel, he brought more than just kind words. No, we’re not talking about the billions of dollars of weapons. Biden instead had more hyperbole than a hyperbolic hyperboloid.

‘Since this terrorist attack took place, we have seen it described as Israel’s 9/11. But for a nation the size of Israel, it was like fifteen 9/11s.’ A 135/11, if you will. ‘The scale may be different, but I’m sure those horrors have tapped into some kind of primal feeling in Israel, just like it did and felt in the US.’ By scale, we assume he means that the US measures in imperial 9/11s, while Israel uses metric.

While he also vowed that the US would stand by Israel ‘forever,’ he urged the Israeli government not to repeat the mistakes the US made, when they experienced their own 9/11, which was fifteen times smaller than Israel’s metric 13.18. ‘While we sought justice and got justice, we also made mistakes,’ he said. He did not add that Israel should not repeat the mistakes the US made when they went into Iraq the first time, or second time, or when they accidentally created ISIS, or when they accidentally created al-Qaeda.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas declined to take a telephone call from US President Joe Biden during the latter's visit to Israel on October 18. Kan public broadcaster reported that the Biden administration officials tried to arrange a phone call between the leaders, but Abbas rejected the request. Abbas also canceled an expected meeting with Biden and Arab leaders at a summit in Jordan earlier this week.
