: Dr. Darryll Pines was appointed to be the 34th president of the University of Maryland, College Park, the flagship university in the state of Maryland, after Wallace Loh retires in June 2020. Dr. Pines is currently dean of the university’s A. James Clark School of Engineering and the Nariman Farvardin Professor of Aerospace Engineering. He will be the first Black president in UMD’s 164-year history.

According to UMD, Dr. Pines has proven to be an excellent leader over the engineering school. Here are some highlights from his biography on UMD’s website:
“His leadership of the Clark School has been shaped by important priorities: improving teaching in fundamental undergraduate courses, thereby boosting student retention; achieving success in national and international student competitions; emphasizing sustainability engineering and service learning; promoting STEM education among high school students; and amplifying the impact of the school’s expansive research programs.”

“For instance, the Clark School’s one-year undergraduate retention rate is 91 percent; its five-year graduation rate is 75 percent—both of which rank among the top at public flagship universities nationwide. UMD’s Solar Decathlon team placed first worldwide in the 2011 competition, the Clark School’s Engineers Without Borders chapter is considered one of the best in the country, and the Engineering Sustainability Workshop launched by Dr. Pines has become a marquee campus event.”

“Under Dr. Pines’ leadership, the number of tenured and tenure-track women faculty in the Clark School has more than doubled, and the number of underrepresented minority faculty has grown as well. He’s attracted significant philanthropic support to the school, ending the university’s last campaign with more than $240 million raised, 30 percent over the school’s $185 million goal. In UMD’s current campaign, Fearless Ideas, the Clark School has raised nearly $504 million, eclipsing its goal of $500 million.”

: Stacey Abrams (), who likely would have been the first Black woman governor in the United States if not for voter suppression, is a politician, activist, lawyer and writer.

She served in the Georgia House of Representatives from 2013 to 2017 and rose to national attention during the 2018 Georgia gubernatorial election when she faced off against Republican Secretary of State for Georgia Brian Kemp.

The election was a full display of voter suppression in Georgia and was overall pretty shady since her opponent (Kemp) oversaw the election he was competing in as Secretary of State.

Abrams lost by about 50,000 votes. In the year before, Kemp had purged (removed voters from) around 670,000 voter registrations and about 53,000 voter registrations were pending a month before the election. Not sure about y'all, but that all sounds pretty shady to us…

ANYWAY, our good sis Stacey Abrams decided to address the problem by launching 2020 to address voter suppression in 20 states and provide Democrats resources to support voter registration, make sure votes are accurately counted and ensure people have access to correct voting information and locations.

Stacey Abrams was also the first Black woman to deliver the official rebuttal to the State of the Union AND the first person EVER not holding an office to give one.

Needless to say, we STAN a proactive, compassionate, genius queen.

Triple threat is not nearly enough to describe the queen that is Robyn 'Rihanna' Fenty. At the tender age of 31, RiRi has already won 7 , 5 , sold over 30 million , earned 70 magazine covers, done partnerships with and , won the 2014 from the , launched her own beauty, lingerie, and high fashion lines and chile she is just warming up.
-
She broke the beauty industry in 2017 when she launched with 40 foundation shades. In a space where everyone thought 2 shades of not white was enough, Rihanna gave us range. further pushed the envelop highlighting all types of body shades and colors at 2 years in a row. As if that wasn't enough she started her own fashion house under the umbrella. (For context, LMVH is a leader in luxury, home to brands like Moet, LV, Dior, Givenchy, and Kenzo to name a few and hasn't added a fashion house since 2004.)
-
This queen also has a heart of gold. She has done so much work in educating women and young girls in and across the globe serving as a , and starting her foundation.
-
As we wait for her next album *cough cough*, we stan this multicultural, multifaceted, entrepreneurial shade queen!

Do you think Mike Bloomberg may have regretted getting on stage?

First question of the night went to Sen. and about which of them could beat . But whatever, because what happened next is what really matters. Sen. Elizabeth (muhf**kin) Warren came through with the first hit of the night and it might as well have been a K.O.

Warren said: “So I’d like to talk about who we’re running against, a billionaire who calls women ‘fat broads’ and ‘horse-faced lesbians.’ And, no, I’m not talking about . I’m talking about Mayor .” THE CROWD WENT WILD.

TBH, you really could’ve ended the night there because in any other ring, that could’ve easily been a one-hit K.O., AND THEN other candidates joined Sen. to criticize...

“I’m not bossy. I’m the boss.“

, Sasha Fierce, Yoncé, "B," Bey -- the list goes on. Beyoncé is a cultural icon. Actually, no. She’s an icon PERIODT. Queen Bey has served us music, looks, dance moves, confidence, encouragement, inspiration and more. Her unapologetic and music reminds us that pays off.

Let's list some of the Queen's accolades/accomplishments (in no particular order):

- In 2014, she became the highest-paid Black musician in history.
- She is the most nominated woman in Awards history and has 24 wins.
-Our good sis is also the first musician to debut at number one on the with her first six solo studio albums.

Beyoncé continues to inspire us and show us the benefits of hard work.

Serena Williams has won 23 Grand Slam titles, and has been a fierce competitor in the world of professional tennis for the last 25 years! Serena and her sister Venus Williams, who have won 22 titles together including 14 grand slams and 3 Olympic Gold Medals, have paved the way for other young black women who love the sport and aspire to win similar titles the Williams sisters have claimed. Williams faced troubles of racism, body shaming, and sexism and still proved to be better and more successful than any of her haters.

We stan a resilient, hardworking queen.

“I was no one, nobody, from Nowheresville until I became a drag queen. That's what made me in New York, that's what made me in New Jersey, that's what made me in the world.”

Marsha P. Johnson has shown us that expression is an important piece to our soul and how we will impact the world. Johnson was a black transgender woman and an activists for the lgbt+ community as well as for transgender people of color. Johnson is known for kicking off the stonewall riots and joining Sylvia Rivera to make STAR (Street Transgender Action Revolutionaries) to help homeless transgender people in New York City. Johnson’s outgoing attitude and boldness is something many today still admire her for.

“I don't want to sound trite, but families and children are so important to our society, and to dedicate your life to trying to improve their lives is completely satisfying.”

Jane Bolin graduated from Yale law school in 1931 and went on to become the first Black female judge. She focused on family court cases and strived to help children’s safety in the home.

We stan an educated, compassionate queen.
