Nearly 2,000 years ago, Italy’s Mount Vesuvius erupted and wreaked havoc on Roman communities near modern-day Naples. The remains of citizens of Pompeii have left a haunting imprint of just how terrifying the event was, but recent discoveries lend further perspective. One of the thousands of victims of the volcanic eruption was apparently exposed to so much heat that his brain was chemically transformed into obsidian glass.

The idea for M&M’s came about when the son of Mars company noticed soldiers in the Spanish Civil War were eating British-made Smarties. These chocolate candies had an anti-melting coating. Mars wanted to make the same thing. He got a patent, created M&M Limited, and the rest is history.

23 years after a modern art gallery in northern Italy was robbed, a groundskeeper solved the mystery of a stolen masterpiece. This portrait painted by Gustav Klimt was found in between the walls of the building, wrapped in a trash bag. Some theorize that the burglar either hid the painting there because they couldn’t escape undetected or that they intended to come back for the painting but were never able to do so.

Due to the similarity between the structure of Mona Lisa’s face and the sketches the Renaissance artist did of himself, some historians have theorized that this mysterious lady is no lady after all. They think that the subject is neither an imaginary woman nor a historical one but rather a self-portrait of Da Vinci dressed as a woman.

The trapped moisture within the rock can rapidly evaporate when placed next to a hot fire. This can cause the rocks to expand suddenly, resulting in a dangerous explosion.

These nomadic cattle herders found in the Sahel, a semi-arid region in the south of the Sahara Desert, have extremely unique cultural practices. The Wodaabe are known for the tradition of Gerewol, a prestigious festival in which men compete for love. The Wodaabe men paint their faces in bright colors, wear colorful clothes and perform a series of dance routines to attract women.
