New book alert! We’ve been working away on some really cool family recipe books (lots of recipes for us to drool over and cook from soon!)
This book by Jaya Mahajan @jayamahajan7 is a very special one. With stories from her many aunts, legendary family recipes and sweet handwritten notes, this book has hard to find Parsi recipes that we don’t often see in a recipe book.
One of our favorite things over here is to read the family stories, of connection and heritage, over food. And this book is a reminder of what a privilege it is to preserve those precious memories for families 🥰

Sri recently spent some a couple days in Lucknow! The city’s rich food legacy, influenced by the Mughals and their appreciation for fine cuisine, is a true foodie destination. Awadh, the broader region, stands as a haven for kebabs and biryanis. The cuisine is characterized by intricate flavors, aromatic spices, and meat heavy dishes.
Here are some delicious spots Sri explored:
* Tunday Kebab: Home to legendary melt-in-the-mouth galouti kebabs and nihari.
* Shukla Chaat: The best chaat in Luknow! The large tawa is used to cook the most incredible aloo tikis, they also had a delicious seasonal chaat with peas.
* Oudhyana at The Taj Lucknow: Great for a more formal meal - standouts were the kareli, lamb calf and baadal-e-jaam, fried eggplants with saffron yogurt.
* Ram Asray: One of the oldest and best sweets shops with an amazing selection of mithai!
* Bajpayee Kachodi Bhandar: Unmissable khasta kachori, which are crispy puris stuffed with potato and masala.
* Makhan Malai: A winter specialty with whipped milk, cardamom, saffron, and dried fruit. This can be found in the Chowk neighborhood along with many local veggie stalls.
* Hazratganj: Another great area for indulging in delicious chaat and other street foods.

We are so excited to share a community recipe today. Sarah shared her recipe for this beautiful pumpkin snack cake with a tahini maple glaze. It’s a recipe she prepares for her kids every autumn to welcome the season and crisp temperatures. The pumpkin and cinnamon is quintessential fall, but the use of the tahini in the glaze is a nod to her Jordanian heritage. We love seeing how Sarah adds a little bit of cultural familiarity to this cake to make it her own.
If you’d like us to recreate one of your recipes, send us a DM to find out more.
Recipe
For the cake
* 1 stick butter, melted
* ¾ cup light brown sugar
* ¼ cup granulated sugar
* 2 eggs
* 1 ½ cups all purpose flour
* 1 ½ tsp baking powder
* ¾ tsp baking soda
* ½ tsp salt
* 1 can pure pumpkin puree
* ¼ cup whole milk
* 1 tsp vanilla extract
* 1 tsp cinnamon
For the glaze
* ¼ cup tahini
* 3 Tbsp maple syrup
* water, to thin
- Preheat the oven to 350F and grease a 9x9 square baking pan.
- Cream the butter and sugar together. Add the eggs and whisk well until ribbony.
- Add the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Mix with a wooden spoon or spatula just until incorporated.
- Add the pumpkin puree, milk, vanilla, and cinnamon. Mix until combined.
- Transfer the batter into the prepared baking pan. Bake for 45-55 minutes or until the cake is set and a tester releases clean.
- Let cool before removing from the pan. Make the glaze in the meantime.
- In a small bowl, whisk together the tahini and maple syrup. Keep adding water, one tablespoon at a time, until the glaze is pourable and smooth.
- Pour the glaze over the cooled cake before serving.

We love and champion creating cookbooks to commemorate celebratory occasions. Dinner with the Dutros by Natalie and Dean is a complication of their favorite recipes and was given away as wedding favors to guests at their wedding. We thought this was such a fun and unique idea opposed to some random favor that usually ends up in the trash. It’s also such a wonderful way for the couple to remember their wedding time years from now and the dishes they enjoyed cooking together. As we always say, food is memories. Watch to find out more about how this cookbook came to life!

Follow along as Sri visits a cinnamon farm and producer in Sri Lanka. Ceylon cinnamon is a coveted spice and known as the true cinnamon, unlike Cassia which is what you typically see in the commercial market. Ceylon cinnamon is more delicate and floral with a bolder spice level. Have you tried Ceylon cinnamon and what are your thoughts?

Happy March 1st! We are so excited to kick off this month by sharing a new cookbook from our wonderful client Ruth. Her Heirloom published book “In Search of Rugelach: A Family Trust of Recipes,” is a collection of nostalgic recipes from her childhood into adult life. Ruth chose a canary yellow linen bound cookbook in our Legacy layout with a focus on recipes over images.
We caught up with Ruth in her home in the Bay Area as she shares her memories of her grandmother’s cookies, which later she came to know as rugelach. We love this story and her quest to recreate those very special “grandma cookies” that were such a part of her younger years.
