I’ve had a lot on my mind lately, and we need to talk. It has become increasingly disturbing seeing such a sharp uptick in anti-Asian violence light of recent events. Fact: the number of Asian hate crimes in the USA has now surpassed the number of deaths by COVID-19 in the USA. But why is no one talking about it? As put it: “erasure and silence has been used as a tool to oppress Asians throughout time.” If you’re not actively following media specifically geared towards reporting about Asian news (shoutout to and ), these hate crimes become virtually invisible. Yet if the situation were switched and white people were being discriminated against by non-whites in record numbers nationwide during a pandemic, this would, without a doubt, be making the headlines every night.
In an act of solidarity to my Asian community, today I’ve decided to highlight my favorite Asian creators from everything to architecture, graphic design, cooking, modeling, entertainment, food critique, and more. Not only do I admire them for working hard to create the best content they can, they’re also not scared to use their platform to speak out for what they believe in. There are 48 countries in Asia, all with their own distinct culture, language, customs, and cuisine, yet Asians are *more often than not* grouped together, spoken over, stereotyped, fetishized, and largely left behind in discussions about race and equality. Today I’m speaking out against that, and if you want to show solidarity, you can start by using your platform to show where you stand. Silence is complicity.
