Thank you actually for this wonderful memory to remember. Also ’s remarkable foundation of a genius piece, .esquivel’s contribution and ’s musical direction. So glad to see The Winter’s Tale is still living its life around the world as well. Hopefully it will be revived back at ROH again.

Thank you to the spectacular Royal Ballet and for a wonderful run of ‘Like Water For Chocolate’ Sorry that I wasn’t there with you tonight, but I’m with putting on ‘The Winter’s Tale’ I feel very lucky to have the chance to continue the work we do together in other corners of the world and to be staging a full length that we made for the legendary company of John Neumeier. Dancers from all companies, you are artists of the highest order. What you achieve takes audiences to unfathomable places. I salute you. Have a great holiday Royal Ballet, you deserve it! Thank you .toohey for all the work you are putting in to my ballets at this moment. I couldn’t do it without you. your music takes us to all these places and and you make it all come into vibrant focus. Gratitude to all the teams.

😍Just a few of our favourite snaps BTS from The Royal Ballet's Like Water For Chocolate, which opened on the Main Stage this week!

’s new full-length ballet has been created for The Royal Ballet with original music by .

Inspired by .esquivel’s acclaimed Mexican novel, in Like Water for Chocolate the central character’s emotions spill out through cooking to influence everyone around her in startling and dramatic ways.

In this co-production with , Mexican conductor acts as musical consultant with Christopher Wheeldon working closely with Esquivel to reshape her richly layered story as an entertaining and engrossing new ballet. Designer Bob Crowley, lighting designer Natasha Katz and video designer join the creative team to bring Esquivel’s extraordinary characters to life.

Do you know when did I had a cathartic moment this time? It was when I finally saw ’s Mama Elena clearly touched ’s Pedro’s head. That’s a very tender touch, but when Pedro saw her ghost at last after the touch, he was aghast and absolutely resist. I know that touch. I know how this kind of intimacy is actually a displacement of care. Disappointment is all in this story. Next time, check out when are the characters nearly touching, wanting to touch, and when they finally touch, try to see and listen what happen to the music and the lighting - the more you see, hear and feel, the more you know how this story goes heavier and heavier and heavier to the end when a ‘happy ending’ has to be succeeded by letting go - another kind of resistance.

P.S. Seeing a ballet, an opera or a theatre piece is ‘travelling’. Whenever you see a piece, you have to use to heart to see it first, then use your brain to analyse. A monument has its history. It speaks to you directly or indirectly. A piece as well. Your eyes should be a camera lens. How you view a piece speaks more about you instead of the piece. Don’t be confused with ‘travelling’ by ‘tourism’ - the latter is only perusing something exotic by sitting at the outskirt. Please, be a ‘traveller’, not a ‘tourist’.

What is epic? Most people would think of grand-scale sets, lavish costumes and a story about ‘war’ and ‘peace’. To me, ‘epicness’ is not confined by external visual. Something domestic and melodramatic can also be very epic - it all depends on how deep we go into those emotional personal spaces of intimacy and taboos - the confrontation of our desires - that can lash out ripples of passion that we once forgot that we had, and, most importantly to know, we actually still have it.

Seeing Like Water For Chocolate is like getting closer to what we tend not to confront: the guilt from tradition. Freedom is not free, and once we can finally let go of these ‘walls’ and ‘’locks’ of tradition, the pure nature of ‘love’ can be revealed, and the process is not by externally showing resistance. Resistance is in us. What we should see, or even feel is our association to the suffocation of ‘legacy’, something that can be very didactic and fragmented, but simultaneously cohesive under our skin. That is where the ‘epic’ lies.

is correct. This is a Mexican story. This is a British story. This is an American story. This is definitely an Asian story. And it’s all in the music. It’s all in the music - ‘love is never still’

Last but not least, I’m so happy for ! At this stage of his, he doesn’t need to evolve from his successful style of design. Yet, starting from The Inheritance, we can all see that he updated himself and venture to emotional spaces where he gives room to lighting (by ) and videos (by ). He lets the space breathe more and more, and in return, every elements on the stage speaks - one example: that white garment with traditional prints that hangs above the stage, check the different sizes through the acts. It speaks more than just a cloth or a narrative device or some concrete symbol that intellectuals want to read through.

What an opening night for the world premiere! Bravi for their third story ballet at the Royal Opera House!
