May 1776 marked a turning point on the path to independence.

Foreign support began to take shape, colonies were urged to form new governments, and leaders in Rhode Island and Virginia moved decisively toward independence. At the same time, influential publications helped define the principles of self-government.

These events helped lay the groundwork for the Declaration of Independence just weeks later.

In May 1776, momentum toward independence accelerated across the colonies.

France and Spain began supplying weapons to support the Continental Army. The Second Continental Congress urged colonies to form new governments independent of British authority. Rhode Island formally declared independence, and Virginia moved toward full separation from Great Britain.

Each step brought America closer to declaring independence.

April 1776 was filled with defining moments in the fight for independence.

On April 4th, George Washington began moving the Continental Army to New York City following the British evacuation of Boston. Just days later, on April 7th, the USS Lexington captured the British vessel Edward, marking an early victory for the newly formed American Navy. Political momentum also grew when John Adams published Thoughts on Government, outlining principles that would shape the structure of American government.

Then on April 12th, North Carolina’s Provincial Congress authorized its delegates to vote for independence from Great Britain — a decisive step toward the birth of a new nation.

These moments are part of our year-long series, One Month That Changed the World, celebrating America’s 250th birthday.
