Checking out old aerial footage of my property to better understand the current drainage issues.

When the barn was built in 2019 they used this pasture to bring in and store materials, and created heavily compacted areas.

It is clear in the picture where I have the most issues. Look back at google maps to learn your land. It also helps put into perspective how much you have accomplished over time.

Remember, it’s a marathon - not a sprint!

“Once in a blue moon” 🌕

Not only was last night a full moon - it was a SUPER BLUE moon!

Apparently the next super blue moon won’t take place until 2037, so cash in on those “once in a blue moon” opportunities today!!

I see a lot of dandelion and early spring w**ds popping up this week.

My girls love picking them for our rabbits and chickens while most of us lawn nerds cringe 🤪

We will be treating this area with 24D / Dicamba mix because the w**d density is really difficult for the grass to compete against. We have several areas to remain untouched for pollinators and animals to roam.

Once we have control I plan to use very little herbicide in this area going forward.

Say a prayer for us 🌼

K31 kind of growing on me.

The rabbits and chickens eat it up, and It’s been green all year. Zero irrigation, minimal fert, just weekly mowing.

Still got some clover and some w**ds, but I’m happy with the progress so far.

Throw back Thursday to my first domination line ☺️

This property took several years to repair, and as a first time home owner at the time I had no clue what to do at all.

Just a reminder that a little dedication and effort go a long way. So many people find themselves in the position I was in with limited knowledge and resources but a desire for something more.

It was this lawn that drew me to help new homeowners and lawn care rookies because I remember the feeling of hopelessness needing support and guidance.

At this moment I knew I was hooked!

When did you realize you were a lawn nerd? Let me know in the comments!

Proof that pre emergents work.

Neighbor on the right sprayed about 4 feet over the property line to ward off unwanted w**ds.

Neighbor on the left didn’t apply anything. Wild to see the difference in dandelion density in the 4 foot strip between the two properties.

Season 2 Episode 5: Weather

Whether it's been in your favor or not this season, it's crucial to utilize weather as a tool in our lawn care program.

While we can't control outside variables, we can control our approach to circumstances brought on by the weather.

Allow nature to pick up some of the slack by applying certain products before a light rain, or avoiding certain equipment when the ground is going to be wet.

Learn from the variables we can't control to improve upon the ones we can.

Fact - ending your w**ds makes them look a little tidier…

The North end needs a lot of work, but at least I found the edge!

Brick edging isn’t great with the blade - I’ll have to whipper snap it until we repave and add curbing.

Welcome to Season 2, Episode 4 - a bonus road trip episode!

In this episode, I am taking you along for a ride to Bettendorf Iowa to pick up a lawn mower I traded for Big Red, my 30" Toro Timemaster.

As favorable weather starts to roll in, it is crucial that we have prepared our equipment and overall game plan for the season.

Since the weather has bought us a few extra weeks to prepare, this brainstorm session should help many of you develop the mindset for initial steps back in the lawn.

We will navigate questions surrounding our overall strategy this season including what equipment will I need? What product should I be purchasing? What challenges face our program, and when should we focus on them?

07/04/2022

Early spring is a frustrating transition back into the lawn after a cold and dark winter.

Many of us have been cooped up for months waiting for warmer temperatures to melt the snow just to reveal a tampered down, distressed, and struggling lawn.

The difficult nature of springtime is the fluctuation of temperatures and conditions. Some days are warm enough for shorts and sandles while other days drop into the 30s. Just the other day we had over an inch of snow here in the Midwest!

Don’t panic - this is all part of the process, and signals to us that we need to start the season strong with our first set of applications.

In this episode we navigate questions specifically surrounding our spring pre-emergent strategy to prevent Digitaria Sanguinalis😯 or more commonly known as the dreaded crabgrass!

We will answer questions like: What is pre-emergent? How does pre-emergent prevent crabgrass? Why should I apply pre-emergent? When should I apply pre-emergent?

For additional spring tips and pre-emergent strategy, please revisit season 1.

Things are starting to green up 🌳

We took a family trip to St. Louis where everything was in full bloom. We’re a couple weeks out here in Chicagoland area before things are really rolling, but definitely a reminder to get your plan underway.

Get your pre emergent ordered, and soil tests sent off for fertilizer strategy - If doing a renovation make sure to lock down your seed!

Happy spring! Let’s get this season going already 💪🏻

Learn your land ⛰

I got willy-nilly and didn’t notice a small tree stump hidden under the grass.

I should have done a more thorough walk through, and marked every mowing hazard - especially being new to this property.

Getting back in the saddle this spring means also being aware of your surroundings.

Whether you are new to a property or a veteran lawncare enthusiast, take the time to learn your land before getting out there this season.

Check for sticks and branches, toys, rocks, and large divots from winter abuse. Ungulations, corners, property lines, walk everything and mark the areas to avoid. Save yourself the time, effort, and money this season.

Thankfully a blade replacement is all that’s needed here. Not my favorite way to start the season, but we’ll get through it!

16/02/2022

The number one question to be answered while planning a lawn care program is whether or not a renovation will take place any time this year.

The entire season depends on this decision, and will dictate time spent, products to purchase, and overall strategy from mowing frequency to irrigation.

Join the discussion with our guest Vince to help identify specific benefits and drawbacks of a lawn renovation so you can best decide for yourself what your plan should be this year.

What a season! I hope everyone had a fun filled weekend.

Halloween is always my last hurdle before putting the lawn to bed. If we’re lucky we will get one more application and a few more mows - time will tell!

Thanks for being part of my lawn journey this season. Much more to come in the coming year! (Sneak peak of the new property on the last slide).
