Going by their performance in answering questions in their panel discussion at , when it comes to citing figures and data, and giving examples from other countries, I think that Peter Obi has met his match in Kashim Shettima

If someone had landed in Nigeria from Mars on Monday and read treads on Twitter Nigeria, he would have thought Senator Kashim Shettima was one tasteless, uneducated Nigerian. But the man so derisively targeted by a section of Twittersphere was nothing of such.

He was a victim of the Twitter herd, people who behave like the herdsman’s cows, without any reflection and tweet what others in their group are tweeting, tweets dripping with hate and insults, that ought not to be on the social media platform were the Twitter police alive to their responsibility.

Shettima, two term governor of Borno, a serving senator and vice presidential candidate of the APC became the butt of derisive jokes that Monday, because he featured as a panelist at the NBA Conference in Lagos. He came to represent Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

He was the first to take the podium, which was provided after he had started speaking. He jettisoned a prepared speech on the topic and rather chose to speak on the track records of Tinubu as governor of Lagos and his record as governor of Borno state.

His delivery, done extemporaneously, was top notch. As many unbiased listeners said, he was the starboy at the segment of the conference. He spoke eloquently with conviction. He quoted figures and he said he and Tinubu will replicate their joint records at the centre from 29 May 2023.

Senator Shettima outshone other speakers. He was better than Obi, who as usual reeled out fake statistics about oil production and theft, unemployment, declared Nigeria a failed state but failed to offer solutions. Atiku who also came tried to make a political capital out of ASUU strike by advocating the transfer of Federal universities to the states. Afterall, he said some of the universities had regional history. He was referring to Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, Obafemi Awolowo University in Ife and Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Nsukka. Hours later Atiku walked back the suggestion and denied ever saying so.

Shettima spoke about how Tinubu and his successors grew the economy of Lagos from N600m revenue base to N51billion today, to become Africa’s fourth biggest economy. He spoke about their readiness to deploy his experience in fighting insurgents to deal with problems of banditry and kidnapping today.

Not a rabble rouser, Shettima’s submission appealed more to the rational audience in the hall of Eko Atlantic and Suites. Lawyer and activist Ayo Obe, who listened to the panelists of politicians, tweeted: “Going by their performance in answering questions in their panel discussion at , when it comes to citing figures and data, and giving examples from other countries, I think that has met his match in .

Clearly, some sections of people in the hall were not interested in Shettima’s speech. They were focussed on the mundane: his attire. But they got it all wrong. If they had not been limited by their own bushman’s narrow view, they would have known that it was pointless ridiculing the senator with his suit and tie. They were the people that needed further exposure on the correctness of dress modes.

A lot of people may still be wondering why Tinubu picked Shettima as running mate and not somebody else. One of the reasons was what the whole world saw on display Monday.

Shettima is highly cerebral. Give Shettima the option to pick a monetary or book prize, he will opt for books. He loves books, his friends testify, such that any time he travels out of the country, he returns with book gifts. Shettima is not a dude, he is rather a deep thinker, indeed a big thinker.

This is one reason Borno people will not forget him in a hurry. Despite the Boko Haram crisis that began in 2009, two years before he became governor , Shettima left a legacy of big schools, better than some of the Nigerian universities. He built housing estates and hospitals. He rebuilt over 50 churches destroyed by the insurgents. He invested in agriculture and left a successor that has continued to build on his legacy, just like Tinubu’s successors have been doing in Lagos.

Shettima is also cosmopolitan. He was educated in Maiduguri and Ibadan. He studied Agricultural Economics first at UNIMAID. He did his NYSC in Calabar. He then went for a masters degree at UI. He started his working career in 1991 as a lecturer in Agricultural Economics at the University of Maiduguri, before crossing to banking.

His first port of call was Commercial Bank of Africa as an Agricultural Economist at its Ikeja Office, Lagos State between 1993 and 1997. He left as deputy manager to join African International Bank Limited, Kaduna Branch (1997–2001).

From AIB, Shettima in 2001 joined Zenith Bank as Deputy Manager/Branch Head in the Maiduguri Office in 2001. Within six years, he rose to become the General Manager, one of the fastest career progression by any staff in Nigeria’s biggest bank.

But the pull of politics was irresistible for the banker. In 2007, he took up political appointment as commissioner for finance and economic development in his home state of Borno.

He was so good that within the four years he served under Governor Ali Modu Sheriff, he was moved from ministry to ministry. His last place was the ministry of local government and chieftaincy affairs.

The left-handed Shettima became the governor of Borno state by accident in 2011. This happened after insurgents killed the original candidate, Engineer Modu Fannami Gubio.

The rest is now history.

*62th NBA Conference: How Kashim Shettima Won His Opponents By Logic*

In the words of His Excellency, Senator Kashim Shettima, the erstwhile Governor of Borno State, and incumbent Vice Presidential Candidate of Nigeria's ruling All Progressives Congress, at the 2022 Annual Conference of the Nigeria Bar Assiciation:

"I am the 'Golden Boy' of Zenith. In Jim Ovia's World, the sole parameter for assessing people, is the level of your competence and your imports. I dare say that no one...grew faster, in the history of Zenith Bank, than myself". Awesome! The faster grown staff of Zenith Bank, and tagged "golden".

First that puts to rest the matter of how he dressed to the 62th NBA Conference. He would not have grew so fast in Zenith Bank if he could not wear his suits well, nor know what shoes would match his outfit on a normal work day. We all know how Bankers dressed to work on work days.

How else would a leader promote his mentee? What mattered more to the most formidable political strategist in Nigeria was about how his presence at the NBA Conference would add to, or subtract from the most challenging Presidential Ticket going into next year's election, especially it's same faith nature.

Some Nigerians are a bunch of soundly sentimental people who judge others through the prism of their ignorance. It is for this kind of mindset - lazy ones - that Rev (Dr) Martin Luther King Jnr talked about judging a man by the "content of his character", and nothing else..

What many who criticised Senator Shettima's appearance at the 62th NBA Conference failed to understand about his it was on how he de-emphasized his outlook, in order to express his eloquence, his depth, his leadership traits, and his sound knowledge his Principal with whom he would be working.

As a reputable Banker, it is a huge joke that anyone should mock Senator Shettima because of the way he dressed to the Conference. A good follower of Senator Kashim Shettima would naturally observe how very comical he is in true life.

Let's recollect his comical reference to the "Okigwe Tomatoes Dealer" called Ahmed Lawal, and how "nice man" (like Vice President Osinbajo) sell ice cream and popcorn". He is just a jolly good fellow and that was what he demonstrated by his outfit at the NBA Conference.

Everybody dresses deliberately. Even family members would have observed and made suggestions about his outfit while he was leaving home, and his aides may also have wondered to themsleves about how "oga" appeared.

These are everyday happenings, in our homes especially. Sometimes, it leads to the change of outfits, and like in Senator Shettima's case, it was very deliberate, and he needed to prove some very severe points about himself, otherwise, and apart of what he wore, and how he appeared in them.

Senator Shettima's outfit was purely diversionary to give "OBI-litrators" and the "dis-ATIKU-lated" the reflection of their hate and foolishness.

Senator Kashim Shettima's representation of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is the testament to understanding how the Asiwaju markets his leadership mentees.

In a recent "My Asuwaju Story" video that went viral, the pioneer winner of the New Era Foundation Spelling Bee Competition, who became the first One-Day Governor of Lagos State, recalled how the Asiwaju asked him to represent him in addressing a Youths Conference. It is a usual phenomenon for the Asiwaju to delegate responsibilities that are promotional.

His representation of the Asiwaju at tge Yoyths Conference projected the young man who was serially trained by the Lagos State Governement, and represe.ting him at that Youth's Conference was the way the Asiwaju moved him on in life. The young man is now a serial entrepreneur, and an employer of labour.

It was very clear to the Asiwaju that more than his Candidature, the most attacked Candidature, going into the 2023 Presidential election has continued to be that of Senator Kashim Ibrahim Shettima, and it was a strategic decision for Asiwaju Bola Tinubu to have Senator Shettima go out to the NBA Conference to show the stuff he is made of.

Asiwaju Bola Tinubu was clear about not going to "Cabinet meetings to preach the Bible nor the Qu'ran..."

More than the credits he would have derived from honouring his invitation to the NBA Conference, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu needed Senator Kashim Shettima to go out there before the August gathering of Nigeria's Bar and Bench to reel out what Nigerians should expect of the Bola Tinubu Presidency from May 29 2023.

Senator Shettima refused to talk about how tye Tinubu Presidency would improve the local economy, or on how they would manage Nigeria's money. He dwelled on global trends and how Nigeria would be a leading light in the expected African Renaissance, in the next decade, joining in with the current global transitions.

Hear him: "In this age where others are talking about Artificial Intelligence, about nanotechnology, about biotechnology, we need a leader, who has the skill-set understanding of the global economy, to shepherd us in this age".

I am looking at the Bola Tinubu Presidency and I can see the beauty of UAE in Duabi, and the escalated structural civilisation of China in Beijing.
