COVID-19 Restrictions and Outdoor Photography:

Given that we are now bound by the COVID-19 Restrictions on the (Gathering and Movement) Order 2020, I wanted to state some facts about photographers and their ability to work under these restrictions in an outdoor environment.

After numerous consultations with NSW Health and Local Police departments, I can conclude the following:

Photography can take place 1 on 1 outdoors if the purpose of the shoot is for business purposes for both parties, providing safe distancing rules are adhered too.

Part 3, Section 6, Sub Section (1)
Schedule 1 - Reasonable Excuses - Point 2

So in conclusion, if you need fitness/lifestyle business related shots then we are well in our rights to do so.

COVID-19 pandemic: Adjusting to a new way of life and the associated impact of the crisis.

Many of us have been hugely affected by the recent outbreak of COVID-19 virus, leaving most people thinking where are we going to be when this passes.

The communication from the Federal Government and associated health authorities in relation to the COVID-19 Restrictions on Gathering and Movement Order have been rather specific about what we can and cannot do.

You check out more here: www.legislation.nsw.gov.au

So what impact has COVID-19 currently had on our everyday lives?

For most, the pandemic represents one of most significant events in a persons life, given that out whole normal daily routine has been turned upside down. We are now required to go into self-isolation, limit physical social gatherings and only leave our homes if absolutely necessary, not to mention the impact of job uncertainty and financial hardship.

With the amount of media that it constantly circulating, who can we trust to relay accurate and informed communications?

There seems to be a real sense of panic, and this is no doubt affecting the everyday Australian.

What considerations are being given to the health of our communities as we navigate through this mess?

Whilst we do not have a lot of data to go off as we are only in the early stages of the pandemic, are people eating properly, getting adequate sleep and exercising?

What is the consideration about the abuse of substances such as alcohol and prescriptive drugs? You only have to look at the way our trusted pharmacies are being treated to get an insight into the disgusting behaviour of those who are unable to get their hands on what they need.

Further, what is the government doing to address the mental health impact for those with pre-exisiting conditions and the spawn of new cases that are yet to be determined?. Do these people have adequate access to support services and are they able to obtain the required medications to help support them throughout this crisis?

Financially, the Commonwealth Treasury has adopted a modelling approach to address the economic impact of the COVID-19 virus, similar to what was deployed during the SARS outbreak back in 2002-2003.

The model which predicts financial movements over the course of the next 12 months is rather aggressive in predicting a “worst case scenario” . The labour market is decreasing and government spending is increasing.

This is not to mention the major reduction in income taxes through job losses.

From a GDP (Gross Domestic Product) perspective, it is likely under current modelling our GDP will retract by approximately 1.32% at 34.2 billion, compared to a 5.2% decline we saw during the GFC.

How do we compare to the rest of the world? Europe and the United States are showing alarming declines in their GDP in vicinity of $290 and $267 billion respectively.

For those people that are now working/studying from home, how is that being played out? For parents that have chosen to take their kids out of school and also are working full time, have had to become temporary educators, whilst to trying to keep on top of their work commitments. Think of it like continuous school holidays, but the kids are home bound, still have to follow the core curriculum and parents are being tested like never before. Have we considered the impact that this might be having on the children?, kids are not as expressive as us adults and deal with issues in different ways.

If we take some positives out of the crisis, families are being bought closer together and I can only hope that this will strengthen relationships for the greater good. On the flip side. those who have pre-exisiting relationship issues are now faced with being confined together, which is no doubt putting additional stress fractures on the relationship.

So what does this mean for people who make a living from outdoor activities?

We know that we are able to go outside if it is an essential part of our income source: (Part 3 Section 6 Sub Section (2)), but we are limited to groups of two. This has thrown “group” fitness sessions into limbo. It has forced those businesses to reduce class sizes and re-think their whole operating model.

Photographers are also being impacted by the crisis, as sporting, music and social events have been cancelled. Photographers need to get creative and think of new ways to produce income that does not contravene the restrictions.

Musicians have been hit hard by this crisis, given the restrictions of live music in venues, and the associated impact on pubs and clubs. The only way forward for musicians , is to look at online concerts, tutoring and live jam sessions. There is still an income source out there.

There is light at the end of the tunnel, but how long is that tunnel and what will be the fallout as we navigate the way forward once we have found a cure for COVID-19?

Like most situations in life common sense will always be a good leveller.

Stay safe.
