Recently I was interviewed to discuss how we can continue to take care of ourselves in light of the disruptions that have been delivered into our lives during this pandemic.

There is a sense of loss right now shared by so many — we’ve lost our routines, jobs, things that we cared about, mountains that we wanted to climb.

But though we’re no longer in a state of routine...we do find ourselves in a state demanding creativity in how we self care for ourselves. We are still connected to our dreams, it’s just about investing in them right now with gratitude and positivity.

There are ways to continue to live our dreams, they just may not look as we may have envisioned them. However, we too are different from when we first drew up those dreams in our minds and attached our lives to realizing them. We have all been recreated through these times of crisis and these differences mean our dreams when we do realize them may very well embody a deeper appreciation for them and may deliver dreams that exceed anything we could have even envisioned.

Such was the case for me last Friday when I altered my ascent of Everest and Lhotse in Nepal, reaching their lofty heights on the lowly sea level located steps of my own home here in Seattle. My dream was redefined, but my appreciation and growth from this homemade mountain has been so meaningful still. It was shared in a way I would never be able to with those in my life if climbing another mountain. It allowed me to support my community through the seattlefoundation making these peaks reached more impactful. And it remains a mountain I can revisit every morning recalling what my nearly 19 hours climbing of it taught me.

My year started as the first and fastest American man to complete the Antarctica Trifecta. Then like all of us, life as we had known and planned for suddenly came to a stop. We all faced our own mountainous sized challenges each day as we sought to find any semblance of a new norm. The difficulties faced on previous expeditions paled in comparison to the hardships the pandemic presented to so many, yet aspects of the trying times each of us were coping with connected to similar experiences from my time isolated in inhospitable places around the world.
It was an honor to join the wonderful morning crew wgnmorningnews back in April to share my experiential knowledge with the hope that what I had learned resonated and helped others going through relatable situations in this new time of COVID.

Learning to live with the storms and the conditions they create outside of your control allows you to loosen your grip on the reins of fear attached to being able to foresee what comes next. In doing so you can move from the anxiety of all that is possible, to all the possibility within this very present moment you are in.

Battered and beat by an unrelenting storm for several days at high camp on Mt Vinson, we could not move towards the summit nor descend to calmer camps below. Yet amidst the lack of control to continue or retreat to comfort, we found present purpose in fortifying our tents, sharing a warm drink with a side of stories together (by the end with rationed reused tea bags haha), or even sitting within our tents admiring the very storm that took our control.
•
In fact, this memory is a reminder to me that when things storm outside or storm within me, to actually change my perspective to witness them instead of being whisked away into them permits me to exist in the storm safely and emerge with a greater knowledge and sense of self.

When risk surrounds, find the focus that grounds you in the next step and present moment. Trying to take in all the dangers undoes the necessary navigation along a given perilous path.
•
Our second rotation was but a few nights - yet its demands far eclipsed that of our first. Part of our team chose to break apart the initial push with an additional stay at Camp 1, while the remainder of us elected for one more rest day at base camp before beginning.
•
Once again at 2 a.m. we loaded packs on and pushed into the Khumbu Icefalls. The routes initial portions had moved further left, nestling closer to the wing of the icefalls and allowing a seemingly safer passage until the final leg where again the same challenges awaited us with more ladders and crevasses to cross.
•
We met the rest of the team at Camp 1 and together continued the long push to Camp 2. Throughout my Khumbu cough plagued me causing my lungs to burn and my muscles in my chest to strain. Arriving in Camp 2 many of us who made the singular push were wrecked. Tears of fatigue and relief uncontrollably filled my eyes.
•
A rest day the following was a gift welcomed and held gratefully. The next day though as we pushed towards the Lhotse Face the remnants of the day up flared up like fire in my lungs. My ego eked me onwards, but my previous experience and knowing that today would not define my overall realization of my dream led me to embrace humility and return to recover further.
•
The choice was correct. As the descent the next day started my body was ready for it, my lungs still not healed were happier. This gave me focus for what we once again were forced to find our way through - the challenging maze and moments of the Khumbu Icefalls where exposure was ever present in parts and speed through remained our savior until we were back safely at Everest Base Camp.

The final steps we seek towards our dreams often ask the most of us.
•
Tonight I begin to take those first steps within this final chapter of the expedition to reach the summit of Everest and Lhotse back to back in 24 hours. Our weather window we believe awaits us. Bags are packed. Oxygen is cached above Camp 2 to aid us.
•
The time has come to reinvest into these steps and the experience ahead all that has been banked away from years of preparing through climbing other mountains, the knowledge gained through falling just short in 2019 of the summit, and from all the love and support that has held me in both the highs and lows of this journey.
•
There are no guarantees as we go forth once more through the Khumbu Icefalls and push higher than I have ever pushed before. But in my heart I have packed away a combination of hope and humility and wrapped it up tightly in patience and positivity. What adversity I may face, I will combat it with my dedication to these personal principles.
•
As we prepare to ascend, I also humbly ask for the invitation and opportunity of these sacred mountains to stand and return safely from their summits.
•
I also humbly ask once more for your positive thoughts and prayers to protect and guide myself and my team as we step forward now and take those final hard steps ahead towards the realization of our dreams. At times you will not be certain of the stability of the next step, but if we wait for certainty and full security to seek our dreams we will forever stand still and our dreams will forever remain on our hoped for horizon.
•
The rope wraps around your forearm and runs through the leather palm of your glove. Friction is your friend and ally in controlling your descent as you drop into the cavernous crevasses.
•
Your carabiners clipped in provide a safety should something collapse or you should unfortuitously fall. But the safety of your descent is in your hands and rests solely upon your focus of where you place your foot next.
•
Yet there is no guarantee within the icefalls that the next step will hold, so speed is safety here as you move as conscientiously as you can and as quickly as possible. Stopping within this space invites additional danger and risk beyond that which inherently already is unavoidable.
•
With experience and time we learn that while we cannot mitigate all risk in this realm and on this path to the dream of the summit (and more importantly that ever crucial safe return) - we can act and perform here in a way to provide ourselves the safest path possible upwards and back again from a dream realized atop the world.

Not all obstacles can be avoided on the path to which you are called down by your hopes and dreams.
•
At times we must enter into the chasm of uncertainty and navigate the chaotic challenges of hard to see next steps.
•
We cannot grip too tightly as we enter this aspect of the path for in doing so we will not move at all and remain in place instead of remaining in progress.
•
Trust yourself and release enough to allow yourself to continue to proceed and you will find a more desirable path once again on the other side.
•
Such an approach is identical to that which we encounter regularly within the Khumbu Icefalls. The glacier cleaving into crevasses so wide and so deep that the only path is to navigate their depths and as directly as possible cross them by going down into them.
•
Yet as we drop in, rappelling ourselves down their icy faces, we are without anyone but ourselves to control our descent and arrest ourselves should be fall.
•
Allowing fear to grip us and in turn cause our grip to fasten too tightly on the rope in hand only will cause us not to move, but hover and hang in the danger of this inhospitable place and position.
•
When we loosen our grip we can safely control ourselves. And even steps downwards are at time still steps forward, for they position us to rise again from the depths to a more determinable path and do so more empowered because of where we just rose from.

Knowing this, we can mitigate the challenge of commencing and with courage take the next steps in the evolution of all we can become and dream of becoming.

Foster peace within your heart and mind amidst the external storms that at times relentlessly will rail against you and that which you seek to realize.

Allowing that which rages around to alter and enter the sanctity of the spirit within welcomes forces that will toss your thoughts like a toy boat on a tumultuous sea.

If this happens, you then face the need to fight on two fronts for the focus and calm to carry on and take on what you must in order to realize the dreams still before you.

So instead within the storm find empowerment through managing what you can control and keeping your mind positive and at peace, knowing that the storm cannot rage on forever and that you are capable of weathering it.

Our first night arriving in “the death zone” on Mt Everest and collapsing into our tent at Camp 4, we were greeted with winds that ripped with a feeling of rage against our tent.
•
Deafening loud, it was impossible to yell and communicate to even a tent next door unless doing so between the brief pause of the endless barrage of gusts.
•
As we sat without water, running low on oxygen, and unsure of where the rest of our team was in Camp 4, my dear friend ronanmeverest2021 and I committed ourselves to not letting this night derail the dream before us. We took on the storm versus letting us be taken up by it and the way in which it seemed to want to push us mentally and emotionally.
•
The night would provide all kinds of unforeseen situations, but we would emerge stronger for it, bonded forever together, and still focused and capable of reaching the summit 24 hours later.

Find the balance between where you have been and where you long to be, knowing weighing either too heavily can cause you to pitch away from the important present step you are taking and throw you off the path you presently travel.
•
It is natural to be drawn backwards and forwards between memories and dreams.
•
Yet imagine as we journey along a tight rope of time that both your memories and dreams weigh on opposite ends of a pole we hold for balance in the moment we are in. Memories molded to one end, dreams draping off the other.
•
To give inequitable attention to past or future would lead to a lack of balance and inability to gently hold the moment with a lightness it barely takes effort. We wish to avoid fighting the weight of disproportionate attention to the preceding or subsequent moments in our life.
•
And of course know at some point we all fall. But there is finding in the falling too that can hopefully help us be better balanced when we begin again.
•
Months removed, the meandering icy paths that paved our way to the highest of peaks remain a reminder of the importance of not thinking too far ahead to the summit or camp that calls, nor the memories of the safety and comforts of home.
•
Here in the Khumbu Icefalls, as with so many such places and spaces in life, the most important step is the step you are taking…especially when the step you take is but the size or less of the foot you are placing.
•
The world quiets, the mind sharpens, and you are ever present for it is paramount to place focus nowhere else…•
And in these hyper-present moments the focus in fact forces fear to subside. For you cannot fully have fear when you are not focused on fearing what could happen, nor what you know has happened in the past.
•
When you are hyper-present you begin to find the foundations of a fearless force that when coupled with humility and gratitude can uncover endless experiences and insights into yourself and the world around y
Hold on to that dream and make small daily summits towards it, for you will one day arrive at the summit of your dreams and stand in realization of all you have worked so hard to achieve.
•
And in that moment, remember too that no summit is arrived at alone. Our paths are interwoven with the support and strength of all those who helped us along the way.
•
For when we stand in celebration of any accomplishment, remember too that we are celebrating the connection to the journey and all who joined us.
•
And often the greater the dream, the greater the gratitude we should grasp on to and the heightened honoring of all who and all that contributed to our success should also be held in high.
•
Walking the final steps to the summit of Mt Everest, there were but several of us sharing this special and sacred space. Yet in looking into the eyes of those around I could see reflected back the depth and distance this moment had traveled to exist now in each of us.
•
This moment was but a dream for so long. So many encouraged and helped us overcome the hurdles and doubts that deterred us. The dream certainly differed in reasoning to be dreamed by all of us, but the constant is that dream involved more than us…it involved all who have been a part of us and our lives.
•
We unfurled flags and laid others to join the tapestry of colors on the summit whipping in the wind.
•
We mixed tears with heartfelt cheers and released our guard for a moment as we embraced one another and this moment.
•
We said prayers and offered gratitude to the mountain, one another, and the universal connection that felt magnified.
•
We were higher than ever before and at the same more connected to everything and everyone who anchored us in the belief of all we were capable of doing.
•

Arriving in the waning hours of the day at Vinson Massif base camp, the sun still hung in the sky as the eternal summer light does on the frozen continent of Antarctica. Getting settled into our tents, ice crystals fell glittering from a seemingly blue sky catching the light in the most magical of ways.
