Hurricane now has maximum sustained winds of 160 mph and has become the earliest Category 5 hurricane to form in the Atlantic Basin, surpassing Hurricane Emily which held the record since July 15th, 2005.

An Excessive Heat Warning has been issued for the Duval County area today. Near record heat will combine with summertime humidity to produce DANGEROUS heat-index values. This will begin late this morning and persist through after sunset. The Excessive Heat Warning will remain in effect until 9 p.m. this evening. We urge everyone to take these temperatures seriously, use caution, and protect themselves and their loved ones. Remember to hydrate, seek shade, take breaks if you work outdoors, and know the signs of heat-related illness.

This system is forecast to develop subtropical or tropical characteristics early this week, and the red-shaded area indicates where the system may develop. Regardless of development, Duval County could experience some significant coastal impacts, including dangerous rip currents, coastal flooding, beach erosion, rough surf, and seas.
