Dear Jonathan,
My daughter is a senior in high school and wants to fly to Mexico with her girlfriends for Spring Break. I said absolutely no way, but my husband has given her permission to go so we are deadlocked. I don't think teenage girls should be running around Mexico without any parental supervision. My husband says he trusts our daughter's judgment because she hasn't done anything to make us think she's going to get in trouble. Would you allow her to go if you were us? Is my husband correct in what he is saying?

Jonathan – One day…she’s going to be all grown up. If you’ve raised her to be a good person..and you feel you can trust her to make good decisions. Then, there shouldn’t be any problems. Good luck!!

Dear Jonathan,
I work for a very well known privately owned company in the area. If I mention the name you will instantly know it. I'm in a bind at work. My boss' wife called me the other day and asked me to start spying on him because she believes he may be cheating. I told her I would think about it. I'm petrified and don't know what to do. If my boss catches me, I will be fired. If I don't do it, she will most likely start putting things in his head about me and I'll be fired then. Does he or she have more control in this situation? I make great money and want to keep my job. What should I do? Accept the proposal or not?

Jonathan – This is a pickle for sure…but, if I got that phone call I would have to respectfully decline. There is NO place where this conversation is appropriate. I would just explain that the conversation is uncomfortable and that you can’t be involved in the private life of your employer. Period…if she starts throwing threats…I think that’s a conversation you may have to have with HR…just cover your bases…Good luck!!

Dear Jonathan,
I can't believe I got written up at work yesterday for a dress issue. Someone complained because I was wearing a button-down shirt that had three buttons open. I feel I'm being discriminated against. How is it okay that 75% of the women in the office wear low-cut tops or dresses and don't get in trouble yet I wear a button-down shirt with three buttons open and now my job is in jeopardy? I think this is a double standard. My HR Director went off the record and told me that someone didn't like my hairy chest showing. Am I being discriminated against? Is there a double standard in the office? Should women in the office be getting written up as well?

Jonathan – imho it kinda sounds like it to me. If the HR person is “going off record” to tell you that…then something isn’t right. I don’t know if the women in the office should be written up too, but I DO think what happened to YOU should be addressed. I would look in your employee handbook first and see if it’s addressed and go from there. Good luck!!

Dear Jonathan,
In 2020, I met a great guy. We spent the first 18 months of the pandemic together. Then, Jason did something wrong and was sentenced to six years in prison. I believe he is a good man and have stayed by him even though everybody else has told me to leave him. I went to his mother's on Saturday and was stunned when I walked into her living room and saw several bouquets of flowers. One of the bouquets spelled out MARRY ME. Jason called me from jail and proposed. I accepted. My friends and family are outraged and can't believe I'm going to waste the next three years of my life waiting for him. They call him THE INMATE. I'm torn about what to do. What would you do if you were me? Stay or go? Some of what they say makes sense. Should I listen to my head or heart?

Jonathan – imho, I don’t know what he did to get locked up. You could always think of the next three years as “planning the wedding”. My thought is you’ve spent very little time getting to know him, 18 months before he did a crime. Would you have said yes back then? How severe was the crime and will you get caught up in it next time? Good luck!!

TMZ reports NFL players don't want Taylor Swift to receive a real Super Bowl ring for supporting Travis Kelce and the Chiefs.
Why would she get one…why?? In what world?
And New York Giants tight end Darren Waller sees it the same way…

He’s the first player to publicly speak out. He says Swift should receive a replica ring, but not a real one because that should be reserved for players only.

Why even a “replica” what am I missing??

Dear Jonathan,
My husband and I took the kids to a family birthday party on Saturday night. Everything was going well until my husband had too much to drink. His brother asked him which one of our three kids is his favorite. He blurted out the name of our oldest. Our other two children were crushed. Needless to say, the drive home was awkward. Yesterday, I told my husband he needs to apologize to our two youngest kids and tell them he was joking and had too much to drink. He shocked the heck out of me when he refused and said honesty is the best policy. He says he hopes they learn to do better in school and behave themselves better so they can become his next favorite. I'm not sure how I feel about this other than I'm hurt. Should my husband apologize or is honesty the best policy?

Jonathan – He should apologize for being a “___” Keeping in mind I don’t have kids…I couldn’t imagine saying anything like that. He was drunk…no excuses…he should not have said that. If the other kids are acting out or not doing well in school THAT is a “parenting flaw” maybe he should drink less and look in the mirror. Absolutely he should apologize.

Dear Jonathan,
I received a call from my son's pre-school yesterday. They want to suspend him because two parents are upset he told a classmate that he loved her on Valentine's Day. Apparently, my son, who is 4 years old, made a Valentine card and then gave it to a girl in his class before telling her he loves her. The girl was upset and told her parents, who now want my son suspended. The owner of the pre-school really doesn't want to discipline him but is under pressure from others. The girl's parents say she was harassed. I disagree. My son is 4 years old and was just expressing his feelings. He has no idea what harassment means. I think what he did was cute. He was trying to express that he likes her as a friend. I think the parents are overreacting. What do you think? Should my son be suspended?

Jonathan – I think your son should be homeschooled…this only gets worse. People are losing their minds over these things. Imho, right or wrong, I think the child is FOUR YEARS OLD! And has no idea of the concept these adults are labeling him with. These parents are the ones with a problem and need to get a grip. Good luck!!

Dear Jonathan,
My friends and family are upset with my husband because he gave me a helium balloon and chocolates from the dollar store yesterday for Valentine's Day. We have been married for 26 years. My friends and family say I deserve better and that my husband is a lazy bum who puts no effort into our relationship. They say the longer the marriage, the bigger the gift. They say he should have done more. I haven't said anything, but I think it's okay that he got me the chocolates and the balloon because it's the thought that counts, especially after 26 years. Should he have done more or is it the thought that counts?

Jonathan – There’s A LOT of “They Say” here…imho…outside opinions like that are noise to me… What’s important is what YOU think. “They” talk a lot but what have THEY done in their relationships? Why do “they” get a say in yours? They don’t…period! You live YOUR life the way it makes you happy…and “They” can keep their opinions to their self. Good luck!!

"My friends, family and co-workers are jumping on me because I did not get my wife of 18 years a Valentine's Day gift. I told them it's a Hallmark Holiday and means nothing because couples should do nice things for each other every day not just one day of the year. Everyone says I'm wrong and that today is a special day to show one's love. They say even though my wife said she wants nothing she really does want something. Is Valentine's Day a Hallmark Holiday or not? Do you agree with me or everyone else who is mad at me?"

Dear Jonathan,
It's Fat Tuesday so there is probably no better time to tell you what happened between me and my wife recently. We have been married for 18 months. She got a new dress for a Mardi Gras party at work and asked me if she looked fat in it. I told her yes. She exploded on me and said a man should never answer YES when asked that question. She had trust issues in her last relationship and told me never to lie. Now, she's upset with me. What should a man say when his partner asks him that question? Was I wrong for being honest?

Jonathan – Ya gotta pick your battles….I don’t think THOSE are the kinds of “trust issues” she was talking about…good luck…you’re going to need it….

PETA recently announced it wants carousels to no longer have animal designs. Yes Peta is now trying to stop us from enjoying fake animals....
Ok Peta I'm now going to suggest something to you that is just as Absurd as this request.... If you want us to stop using fake wooden animals, then you have to stop making and eating plant based MEAT!
No more Tofurkey, No more impossible steaks sausages and Whoppers! NOPE If we can't ride a fake horse than you can't eat fake meat.

Dear Jonathan,
My husband and I allowed our 9-year-old son to stay up and watch the entire Super Bowl. He is a die-hard Niners fan and like some of the Niners players teared up and cried because they lost. My husband told him not to cry because it shows weakness. I disagree and told my son it shows he cares. My husband and I then got into an argument about which it is …. weakness or caring? What do you think it is? Is it okay to cry after a loss if you're an athlete or fan? My husband says the greats in sports never cry after a loss.

Jonathan – imho, I watched a player cry when Reba sang the National Anthem…so…yes they do…I think if your 9 year old cried so what….he’s 9 years old. The fact that the parents fought over it is ridiculous. Good luck.

Dear Jonathan,
My boss throws the wildest Super Bowl parties every year on Super Bowl Sunday. This year will be no different. I can tell it's going to be a wild time because everyone in the office is already charged up. Yesterday, a debate broke out among twenty of us. We were talking about whether or not Taylor will make it to the Big Game when someone asked if she is a good role model. Half of the office said she is not because she trashes her ex-boyfriends in her songs, dates a lot of guys and plays the victim in her music. The other half of the office loves Taylor because she has never been arrested, gives to charity, is an example of female empowerment and is a terrific business woman. I wanted to share our debate with you so you can help us settle it. Which is it? Is Taylor a good role model or not?

Dear Jonathan,
My husband and son are super excited for the Super Bowl because they are huge football fans. Next year will be the first year my son has the opportunity to play tackle football. My husband and I are torn about whether or not to let him do it. This is an issue every set of parents face because of how dangerous and violent the sport is. Our son loves the game so much, but we're worried one head injury or concussion could change his life. I've seen celebrities and former players say they would never allow their children to play. I hate to be a Debbie Downer, but what would you do if you had a son? Let him play or not?

Jonathan – Let him play!!! I’ve never hidden the fact that I don’t have children…but, If I did I know that I would NEVER hold them back from their dreams. If this is what he wants to do…support it…unless it’s getting into a clown car with the joker…support it…Good luck.

Dear Jonathan,
My boyfriend and I met at a bar six months ago. He recently broke up with me because he found out I have an active profile on Match.com. One of his friends came across my profile and told him. I told my boyfriend that I kept my profile active because I like seeing who's on the app. He says this is a form of cheating. I told him it's not because 'I'm browsing, not buying'. If you ask me, he's a bit insecure. I haven't done anything wrong, but just look. Is having an active dating profile while in a committed relationship a form of cheating? I don't think it is.

Jonathan – imho yes, he may BE a little insecure, are you doing anything wrong? Probably not…but, what happens if he does something you don’t like…is he gone? How does he know that he isn’t? I think if you use the phrase “in a committed relationship” which you did…I don’t think YOU are. I think you’re keeping the door open for better options. Good luck!

Dear Jonathan,
My husband and I went out on a date for the first time in a year on Saturday night. We've been busy taking care of our four children so we haven't had time to go out. We went to our favorite Italian restaurant and we're stunned when we got our bill. They charged us for extra marinara sauce and bread. My husband argued for several minutes before we left without leaving a tip. I think restaurants shouldn't charge extra when it comes to sauce and bread. They've raised their prices which we've agreed to pay. Their servers want larger tips so we leave more money. The least they can do is not be so petty. The manager disagreed. He says they charge extra because everything costs more. What are your thoughts on this? Is it wrong for restaurants to charge for a small cup of sauce and petite loaf of bread? I'm sure other people have experienced this as well. Were we in the wrong for complaining or were they in the wrong for charging us?

Jonathan, imho, When my wife and I go out….I don’t really look at that at all. Is the bread and sauce complimentary? Did you ask? SHOULD you ask…I don’t know. When we go to a Mexican restaurant do we get charged for the chips and salsa they bring to the table before we order? I guess my thought is that if you don’t like how some places do business, let’s say they charge you for a service that MAY have been complimentary at one time…abut no longer is…and you don’t agree with it….you don’t go back if it’s that big of a deal….simple…I wouldn’t take it out on the server though, I still would have left a tip. Dear Jonathan,
My husband and I got into a huge argument on Saturday because I bought our dog a Valentine's Day gift. A local jeweler was selling rhinestone studded collars that had one real diamond. My husband couldn't believe I wasted money on a gift for the dog much less one that cost as much as I paid. He says the dog doesn't know it's Valentine's Day. I told him the dog is the love of my life and part of our family so it deserves a gift. Should pets get Valentine's Day gifts? Do you side with me or my husband? Should I return the collar?

Jonathan – Well, if you and your husband have separate bank accounts I would say.. ”Do what you want, it’s YOUR money” However, if you don’t, then that’s a different conversation. Valentines Day as I’ve always understood it were for “lovers” or that special person in your life….so, in doing what you did…what message are you sending your husband. You could have bought the collar anytime..but you did it on Valentines day…and the “love of your life” is your dog….seek help…

Dear Jonathan,
All of the women in my family are mad at me because I hadn't planned on buying a push present for my wife. She is due to give birth next month. The women in my family have been yelling at me. I don't think I should have to purchase a push present. My wife wants an expensive piece of jewelry. That money is better spent on our newborn and a nursery. Plus, it's her job to give birth just like it's my job to take care of the lawn and clear the driveway when it snows. She shouldn't get a gift just for doing her job otherwise I would get a gift every week. A push present feels like a Hallmark holiday. Am I wrong for not getting her a gift? Do you agree with my reasoning? I would love to know what your listeners think…

Jonathan – I’ve never heard of a “Push Present”…I don’t know that I would purchase a piece of jewelry but, imho it kinda sounds like you’re actually calling this special day (the birth of your child) a JOB your wife is suppose to perform. It is nothing of a sort…never equate a woman giving BIRTH to shoveling snow or mowing the lawn. You’re a man, act like one, do your JOB and celebrate the BIRTH of you child.

Dear Jonathan,
I had a co-worker chastise me at work yesterday after she heard me talking about several dates I had. I said I purposely show up late for all my dates to see how my dates will react. It's a test to see whether they will fly off the handle or are even keeled. My coworker, who is married, criticized me saying that showing up late is inconsiderate, rude and arrogant. She also said that's probably why I'm single. I disagree. I do it for a purpose. What do you think of what I'm doing? Is my co-worker right or am I smart for testing out my dates? You can learn a lot about a person by the way they react to certain situations.

Dear Jonathan,
I was checking out at the grocery store the other day when a young girl started throwing a temper tantrum because her mother wouldn't buy her a candy bar. We were stuck in a long line. The tantrum went on for at least 5 minutes. I finally bought the candy bar for the child and gave it to her. I scolded her mother saying in some cases you have to give in to your child's tantrum because it's common courtesy when others are around. She then laced into me and told me that I'm a horrible parent and soft because I give in to children who throw temper tantrums. Other shoppers then weighed in with half backing me and half backing her. What are your thoughts on this? Should parents cave in if a child is throwing an extended temper tantrum? I think they should out of respect for others around them.

Jonathan – imho, I would have minded my business. If you watched a kid that’s not yours…doing a “bad thing” would you take it upon yourself to dole out punishment? No you wouldn’t….I understand the long line of people waiting and the short cut is to just buy the candy bar…however, there could have been a zillion reasons why the mother said no…maybe the child is allergic to peanuts…and it was a Snicker bar…you just don’t know and it’s not your place…good luck!!

Dear Jonathan,
I am seven months pregnant. My fiancé came to me over the weekend and said he would like to name our unborn daughter after his late fiancé. She died just before they were supposed to marry. I was shocked and didn't know what to say. I get that he wants to honor her late memory, but I want to look forward rather than back. I didn't give him an answer. All of my friends say I should reject his request and come up with another name. He says naming our daughter after his late fiancé is the same as naming her after one of our female relatives. Should I acquiesce or not? Am I selfish when I say we need to focus on us not them? Am I being petty and insecure for not honoring my fiancé’s request?

Jonathan – imho, it is in fact..NOT like naming your child after on of your female relatives. This person was someone special in HIS life and had an emotional connection with before he met you. I would agree with you here…you need to focus on the current relationship, which it doesn’t look like he’s quit gotten past his previous one yet. Good luck!!

Dear Jonathan,
My husband and I had a heated argument over the weekend about being too comfortable with one another. The argument started after my husband went to the bathroom with the door open. He says once a couple is comfortable, they have total trust in one another. I think that's a total cop out and a bunch of BS. I think once a couple gets comfortable, they stop giving maximum effort and things go downhill from there. I think they stop surprising one another with romantic gestures and small things that mean a lot. I think being comfortable leads to couples taking each other for granted. What's your opinion on this? Agree with me or him?

Jonathan – Wow…well, what have you done lately that’s been “surprising with romantic gestures”? Now, because he left the door open to p*e, he’s letting things go “downhill” and not giving his maximum effort in the relationship? At least he’s not p*eing on the carpet! Good luck!
