In a world full of materialism and newness, we are reminded by artists Makoto Fujimura and Naoko Fukumaru how to mend our broken spirits using the metaphorical artistry: Kintsugi.

Listening to this podcast you too will feel a sense of newness; of new-found perspective on a shaky world post-COVID.

One of the artists, Makoto Fujimura, speaks on his own testimony and recounts how the need to repair damage within himself as an act of faith to the divine.

A very compelling and artfully spoken podcast, it’ll leave you with fresh ideas about life and keep you looking for the beauty in the brokenness around you.

Check out and Naoko Fukumaru’s interview linked on this quarters homepage, Gold.

“I must be honest and share that I never really appreciated gold or even liked it as jewelry until I started to work with it. The reason I did this was because the gold leaf (not paint or pigment) had an ability to reflect light that I was chasing after. There is no other surface that does this.”

returns for our final issue—gold. She creates with gold leaf and the contrast between light and shadow will lead you into contemplation and meditation. Dawn also gave us some song recommendations that could accompany her work. You’ll find them in the playlist.

This beautiful little creature is the feature of our artist today, Laura Kauffman.

Drawing light and life from the window sill of quiet and special moments, shares with us her poetry, much loved by us was Honeybee.

Laura sees the world like a bee; with a vastly wide sense of her surroundings she creates personal and pure poems about experiencing the world as it is: bountiful of holy surprises.

Check out her other two poems on our website: Come In and Fireflies. Having read them, you’ll leave feeling your heart flutter with wonder and it will be easier to open your eyes to the magic that lies outside the back door.

Unfurling

Each leaf rolled up
In a fetal position
Waiting for its birth
The future will tell
Their true shape and heart
Feathers or leaves
Verdant with life
Planting spores like seeds
But for now they wait
In a womb of unknowing
To uncoil their dreams
And share their beauty

“This poem came from sitting at the table and seeing a scratch on it that revealed all the previous colors. So, I think I see things in the world that trigger feelings in me, and then I write about those feelings.”

Shawn, today’s artist feature, shares what makes him write: the beautiful and simple details in the world.

From Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Shawn and his wife Maile produce a podcast and teach a comprehensive fictional-writing course, all the while raising six kids!

With writing as a passion and a desire to use creativity to share his Godly-given gift, we are very happy here to have him join us this quarter.

Today, in the midst of your experience, I hope you discover the presence of God in your surroundings, just like does in his photography.

Well travelled and curious to know more about the far-reaching love of God, Stu captures images that leave an impression.

“I take photographs because I CAN'T get enough of how amazing everything around me appears!”

-Stu Adank

Artist feature alert! This quarter we have the honour of introducing : a quilter and maker of intentionally thought-out designs whose takes something old and makes it new!

Joy loves creating pieces with scraps and old materials, even though it takes her longer; she finds the beauty in the process.

“Making quilts has me participating in [God’s] creation, right alongside Him as it were.”

Read more about where she draws inspiration, why she is excited by the colour red, and the inspiration she finds at quilt auctions!

Using words to capture and captivate her readers, Amy Lindquist shares two of her special poems - Neighbors and In the Company of Cottonwoods- in our Green issue.

“Writing poetry helps me deepen the daily practice of paying attention to God's world and to the movements of my soul. Poetry helps me name and cherish moments that may otherwise be forgotten.”

-Amy Lindquist

With her love for playing with word choice and using rhythm to balance out her stanzas, Amy creates poetry with a very intentional and creative voice.

This week we are featuring an artist from the beautiful mountains of Alberta: Julie deBoer .deboer.art

As an artist, Julie has grown in her work over many seasons and now empowers others to do the same, through the .official art community that her and her husband founded in 2020.

You’ll notice that Julie shares her story in profoundly rich paintings where it seems as though her brushstrokes are dancing to the rhythms of creation!

“I want my work to be an escape, not from reality, but back to reality, which is full of hope, love, laughter, and deep joy.” -Julie deBoer

Read more about Julie and her mission to create in our Green issue (link in bio).

Welcome Heather Seutter, our agrarian artist, featured in this quarters issue!

With a heart for family, community, flowers, and faith, shares her little corner of life with us in an incredibly insightful way!

“A lovely design within nature is that vegetables love flowers. They bring essential pollinators and can serve as pest deterrents and companion plants. There is so much beauty within God’s design and it powerfully points to a creator who is lovely! God created a beautiful earth, he didn’t have to, but he did. We have a responsibility to steward the earth well.”

You can read more of her story in our issue Green, link in bio.

Next on our artist radar is a one-of-a-kind earring artisan who creates beautifully crafted resin jewelry!

Caris was featured in our Green issue because of her love of colour and her use of natural additions to her earrings.

“Colour is life! It’s joy and celebration. It’s peace and serenity. It’s moody and somber. Colour is language and it's emotional. I’ve always been drawn to colour—never able to just wear black or surround myself with neutrals. Being around bright colours and patterns makes my heart come alive. I find such joy in how colour theory works and how certain colour stories can bring out people’s personalities. It’s so fun!”

Check out more of her stuff on our issue and on her Instagram page tagged in the photo!

"We who garden, garden because we hope. We hope in the seed and the labor and time invested. When winter is cold, we hold that hope that the truth of spring will still find us no matter how dark it has been. When all around us feels bleak, we hope in this thing that we know cannot be changed or shaken: that spring, glorious spring, will always come and there is nothing we can do to change or stop it."

Gina Sutphin celebrates hope and the return of spring in this article. Read her full thoughts here: https://bit.ly/3orxbl5

Artist Feature:

She shared with us a beautiful image of this quarters theme Green…

“When I think of the colour green, I think first of hope. Maybe it comes from living where we do, in Saskatchewan, where for at least six months of the year, green is largely absent. I love spring. I love the first blades of grass that show through the melting snow, and the bright green of tender new leaves budding out on the trees. Hope for life and thriving ahead is a theme in my heart each year as I anticipate this short but glorious season. It is a picture of the already but not yet kingdom we live in and hope for as Christ followers. We can trust that though all appears dormant or dead, spring will come, both in the usual sense, and in the eternal one.”

Collected | GREEN - https://mailchi.mp/7658e4a9374f/collected-green
We've grown something beautiful for you. It's a brand new issue!

Green features two visual artists Lindsey Love Art and Julie DeBoer Art - JdB. With their unique styles and wise words they discuss art, faith, community and the colour green.

Yarrow Land Care and Heather Seutter both have a green thumb. Read in their interviews about the importance of mulching, knowing the land, running a business and seeing God's soil-stained fingerprints everywhere.

Caris Rinas' artisan jewelry made with resin will brighten your day. Her words will too.

Amy Lindquist's poetry continues to be a favourite among our editors. Search with her for a supercolour and click to read two more poems. One on vacation-envy and another about Cottonwood trees.

Listen to the ever-popular playlist and, if time allows, don't stop there, check out a past issue.

We’re a quarterly magazine that gathers story, art, poetry, music and creative voices together to serve, connect and inspire followers of Jesus.

Collected seeks to

  • Serve the reader’s imagination by exploring the sacred, the beautiful and the true through literary, visual and musical art. We invite the reader to rest, to contemplate, and to draw near to their Creator.
