This is an interview with Perla Kohler, a member of the Houston chapter of Food Not Bombs. We discussed Mayor Sylvester Turner and the Houston City Council's current attempt to remove the organization from their location at the Downtown Houston Public Library.

Food Not Bombs serves free vegetarian food every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday at 7 pm at the Library.

"On 30 July, water protectors at Line 3 were subjected to pepper spray and rubber bullets during a series of arrests, and protesters who’ve been jailed have reported mistreatment from officers such as lack of proper food, solitary confinement and denial of medications. Maracle noted the police presence at camps has increased in recent weeks, including more frequent police raids, sweeps, surveillance and helicopter flybys."

More than 600 people have now been arrested or received citations over protests amid growing opposition, native led, to the Line 3 oil sands pipeline currently under construction through Minnesota.

Jamin (Ani) has been sentenced to life in prison for a murder he did not commit. Here is a statement by him to his comrades, it was recorded during a call from him from Harris County Jail (Houston). He is currently in solitary confinement, he is allowed outside his small cell for only one hour per day. Ani is a beloved son, partner, friend, and activist, founder of Broke Ass Pizza. Despite his false imprisonment by the state he is in good spirits, and thanks everyone for their thoughts and support.

Incarceration is torture:

"Many of the defining features of incarceration are linked to negative mental health outcomes, including disconnection from family, loss of autonomy, boredom and lack of purpose, and unpredictability of surroundings. Prof. Craig Haney, an expert on the psychological effects of imprisonment and prison isolation, explains, 'At the very least, prison is painful, and incarcerated persons often suffer long-term consequences from having been subjected to pain, deprivation, and extremely atypical patterns and norms of living and interacting with others.' And as Dr. Seymour L. Halleck has observed, 'The prison environment is almost diabolically conceived to force the offender to experience the pangs of what many psychiatrists would describe as mental illness.' "
