सय वर्ष भन्दा पुरानो नारी दिवसको इतिहास, तर आज धमिलिएको छ। पुँजीपतिहरू यो दिनलाई पनि पुँजी कमाउने माध्यमको रूपमा प्रयोग गरिरहेका छन्। शृङ्गारका सामग्रीहरूमा छुट दिनु, आधुनिक पहिरनहरूमा छुट आदि दिएर नारीहरूलाई अझ साज-सज्जा र फेशनतिर ढल्काउनुमा यिनीहरू पछि परेका छन्। आजको यो व्यवस्थाले विश्व स्तरमै महिलाहरूलाई स्वतन्त्रता दिएको ढोङ गर्दै महिलाहरूलाई अझ धेर शोषण गरिरहेको छ। एकातिर नारीहरूमाथि यौनजन्य शोषणहरू दिन प्रतिदिन बढ्दै छ भने अर्कोतिर झुटो स्वतन्त्रताको नाममा नारीलाई नङ्ग्याउने चलन प्रशस्त देख्न पाइन्छ, विज्ञापनमा नारीको अर्धनग्न शरीरलाई वस्तु सरह प्रस्तुत गरिन्छ र यसरी नारी शरीरलाई बजारीकरण गरेर पुँजीपतिहरूले अत्यधिक नाफा कमाइरहेका छन्। अहिले राम्रा लुगा लगाउने र सौन्दर्य प्रसाधनको बडी मात्रामा प्रयोग गर्ने महिलाहरू मात्र सचेत र आधुनिक छन् भन्ने धेरैको धारणा पाइन्छ। तर यही कुरा नै वास्तवमा उनीहरूको निम्ति ठुलो बन्धन हो भन्ने कुरा उनीहरूलाई थाहा हुँदैन। यसैले नारी दिवसको इतिहास र यसको उद्देश्यलाई कहिले भुल्नु हुँदैन, कारण नारी दिवसको उद्देश्य युगौँदेखि उत्पीडित र शोषित महिलाहरूको शारीरिक र मानसिक उन्मुक्ति हो।

Elections these days are fought on so many issues- Development, Unnati, Bikas, Shakti Pradarshan, who becomes the next monarch and I cannot even keep track of all this anymore, it is beginning to get tiring, repetitive, dirty and pathetic to be honest. Every time elections are around the corner – the first thing that strikes me is – ‘Wow how much more masculine and toxic can we get?’ From chest thumping jingoistic speeches, to empty rhetoric, public bullying, vilifying- we grow more violent and filled with hate. I wish we had better agendas to discuss, I wish we had more to offer in the face of genuine grievances- of tea garden workers, daily wage workers in cinchona plantations, of growing unemployment, rising crime rates, deteriorating education facilities, but no- we will yell at each other, we will shout, and abuse and we will win. The race is after all to become the new tyrant in town and rule with the fist. Jasko Shakti, tyeskoi Bhakti is something we have taken to heart.

One of our readers reached out to us this morning about this instance of experienced assault while travelling in a shared taxi from Darjeeling to Kurseong. She writes,

Yesterday, 8th June 2022, my sister Asha (name changed) who is only 17 was *sexually assaulted* when she was travelling from Darjeeling to Kurseong. My sister was alone when she got on a shared taxi to return home at around 3:30 pm. Then between the next hour my sister was groped and touched inappropriately by this man- Dipesh Shankar . The person who assaulted her is DIPESH SHANKAR who is a TEACHER at Darjeeling Government Highschool.
To everyone who is reading this, I am saddened to tell you that the first reaction my sister got when she screamed and called him out for his actions in a taxi with 10 people (excluding her) was _indifference_. Nobody seemed to care enough and everyone was busy in their own world at such a shocking situation. The driver only arranged for her to switch seats. Then she called home crying for help getting no support when she had been abused. The cab had female passengers in it too yet no one helped her or even came to her defence. Is this the community of our hills that we should be proud of? Is this the community our sisters and daughters must live and grow up in? The driver asked my sister to not speak of this incident since this man, *Dipesh Shankar-the pervert*, was _"a teacher and a regular passenger"_. Did those two facts mean he was incapable of assaulting a young girl when said young girl is clearly saying she was? Why did he come to the defense of the accused before even verifying what the victim said?
• These kinds of incidents are a problem for the hills as a whole. I have -as I am sure many of you have- participated in many awareness campaigns regarding these things but it a different matter altogether to have such an incident hit so close. Today, it was my sister but tomorrow it could be yours. It could be your family member or even you next. As a community, we need to speak up if such incidents occur unlike the way the people in the cab with my sister chose to react. As women we need to help eachother and as men we need to make our womenfolks' lives safe. Where will we end up as a community if we stop caring about one another and let such crimes against half of humanity run rampant without check? I beg you,if you come to know of something like this nearby, please be proactive and help tbe victim seek justice, help the community be a safer place for the next generation.

P.S. It is matter of great concern that a highschool teacher was caught in such an act. Please share this around because should such teachers be allowed to teach in a highschool? Are our hill students safe?Girl or boy what does it matter to a pervert? Today, a man like Dipesh Shankar shouldn't get a job as a teacher at all. He ought to be fired. I hope he is. Please share this so that we learn from this incidents as a community and so that the world knows of his crime.

शोषणकारी समाजले अपराधि जन्माउँछ, मलजल गर्छ र त्यसको संरक्षण पनि। यो समाजमा दिनहु हुने महिला हिँशाका घटनाहरु मध्ये यो भिडियो प्रतिनिधि उदाहरण हो।

आँफु अन्यायमा परेको विषय उजागर गर्न कति हिम्मत र धैर्यता चाहिने रहेछ भन्ने ज्वलन्त उदाहरण यहाँ भेटिन्छ।

भिडियो हेर्दैगर्दा महिला शोषणमा पारिने समाजका हरेक संरचना भत्काउन मन लागिरहेको छ, उत्पिडनका हरेक जराहरु उखेल्न मन लागिरहेको छ।

महिला शोषण र उत्पिडनको ईतिहास मानव सभ्यताको ईतिहास जत्तिकै पुरानो भएकोले शोषणका संरचना र उत्पिडनका हरेक जराहरु उखेल्न सानो लडाइँ लडेर साध्यनै हुनेवाला छैन। महिला हिँसाको सुरुवात नै निजी सम्पत्तिको विकास हुँदै उक्त सम्पत्तिको स्वामित्व पुरुषको हातमा पुग्न थालेपछी महिला शोषण बैधानिक बनाउन थालिएको थियो।

आजपनी प्रतक्ष अप्रतक्ष महिला शोषण र उत्पिडनका सामाजिक संरचनाहरु समाजमा छ्यापछ्याप्ति जरा गाडेर बसेका छन्। पुँजिवादी समाजले महिलालाई बजारको बस्तु बनायो! सुन्दरी, मोडल,फ्यान फलोवर्स बटुल्ने हिरोइन र यौन व्यवसायमा लगाइरहेको छ। जो हाम्रो मानव समाजको घिनलाग्दो द्रिश्य हो।

प्रस्तुत भिडियो एकजना अन्यायमा परेकी महिलाको आवाज मात्र नभएर अपराध सहन बाध्य बनाइएका सारा महिलाको प्रेरणाको स्रोत हो। अब अपराध कसैले सहन हुँदैन, अपराध गर्नेलाई अपराधको स्तर अनुसार सजायको व्यवस्था मिलाउन पर्छ।

अपराधिलाई कार्यवाहि गरौँ!!
अपराधि जन्माउने संरचना सचेत भएर ध्वस्त पारौँ!!!

अन्तमा:-महिलाको सत्रु पुरुष होइन, पुरुषको खेलौँना महिला होइन। सचेत र संगठित महिला र पुरुषको संयुक्त प्रयासमा मात्र अन्यायमा परेका हरेक मानिसले न्याय पाउनेछन्। अन्यायको विरुद्ध बोलौँ, न्यायको पक्षमा संधै बोल्ने हिम्मत गरौँ।

Feminism today occupies a substantially larger place in the popular imagination than it did in the past. While those who identify with the "F word" have been perceived with apprehension, this appears to be progressively fading. What was once perceived as taboo has recently become a trendy subject of interest within popular culture, from woke hash-tags and tote bags to celebrities proudly sporting t-shirts that read "This is what a feminist looks like.” However, as ideas like shattering glass ceilings and breaking into traditionally male oligarchies gain acclaim as ideals for the of the 21st century, inherently feminist issues like poverty, access to healthcare, minimum wages, a basic standard of living, etc., have simultaneously been pushed to the back burner. As a result, progressive feminists have become wary of this burgeoning brand of neoliberal feminism that is taking hold, and with good reason. So, what does mainstream feminism mean? Despite its commitment to equality and inclusive representation, who does it actually cater to? And, why is there an urgent need to reclaim feminism to its radical roots?
