Which critters live in your backyard? Leave a picture of video in the comments. I will start with a family of otters returning to their den. Did you know a group of otters is called a Raft. A baby otter is called a Pup. In Alaska we have both river otters and sea otters.

Commuting in rural Alaska is both exciting and nerve wracking. This is a approach to the landing strip on Prince of Wales. This was a pretty good landing considering the side winds. This is how I do most of my commuting to go shopping for food and supplies I can’t get on the island as well as medical care.

This is a throwback from when I hand raised a hummingbird. He was a baby when I found tangled in a spiderweb. I named him Beaker after the tiny feeder I made him. Hummingbirds need the insects for calcium found trapped in nectar to grow. That meant collecting copious amounts of blossoms to sustain him till I was brave enough to take him outside to the flowers. Hummingbirds being so tiny and me overly cautious I wasn’t sure when taking him outside if he would be ready for the great big world. This in itself is ridiculous as he was a wild animal. In fact the entire scenario was insane and completely out of my nature. Normally and not to sound harsh but I would have looked with interest at the tiny bird struggling in the great tangle of spider silk and marveled the strength of it to entangle this bird. However this was something I couldn’t walk away from. With no plan nor optimism really that the bird would live. I palmed him in my warm hand and took him home. I read everything I could about hummingbirds to find a way to keep him alive. Finally when I felt he was strong and big enough I took him to the flowers and he of course knew exactly what to do. Each feeding lasted longer perched upon my finger yet he still did not fly away. I was beginning to wonder if I would be saddled with this tiny feeding machine forever. Then one day while tending the garden watching Beaker lap up nectar and bugs from a branch I had perched him he finally took flight. Probably long overdue however he was a pro as he was made for that moment. It came naturally to him and with that moment all my doubts of not letting nature take its course and resentment of hours of feedings flew away with him. #alaskanpatriotnetwork
