Tesla CEO Elon Musk now world's wealthiest person: US media

Friday January 08 2021

Elon Musk, the outspoken and envelope-pushing founder and CEO of Tesla, overtook Amazon boss Jeff Bezos to become the world's wealthiest person, US media reported Thursday.

Musk is a major shareholder of the electric car company and has benefited from Tesla's surging share price over the last year. CNBC estimated his wealth at $185 billion.

The distinction is the latest superlative for the South African-born Musk, who also leads the aerospace venture SpaceX.

Tesla is widely seen as a pacesetter for the car industry as conventional automakers try to catch up in electric autos.

Tesla had a strong 2020 as it ramped up production, broke ground on new factories and reported a series of profitable quarters and was added to the prestigious S&P 500 index.

That enabled shares to rise more than 700 percent during the year, making it more valuable that the world's top carmakers combined.

The death penalty handed out to a former Chinese finance chief found guilty of corruption has been heavily criticised by human rights activists.

Lai Xiaomin was arrested in 2018 on charges of taking 1.8bn yuan (£200m, $280m) in bribes over a 10-year period.

It is one of the most severe sentences to stem from President Xi Jinping’s anti-corruption drive.

Human Rights Watch said “China is clearly taking a major step backwards.”

Chinese officials said crimes committed by Mr Lai were during his time as chairman of Huarong Asset Management. The financial firm was set up in 1999 to to take bad debts off China’s largest state-owned banks.

On Tuesday, a court in the northern city of Tianjin, said his crimes had “caused serious losses to the interests of the country”.

“Imposing the death sentence on Lai Xiaomin for financial crimes, such as bribe taking, is outrageous and unacceptable and clearly violates China’s commitments to respect international human rights standards,” Phil Robertson, Deputy Asia Director at Human Rights Watch told the BBC.

The Division Court Martial in Rubirizi district in Western Uganda has sentenced to 101 years in prison a UPDF officer who was found guilty of shooting dead three people and injuring three others.

On December 27, 2020, Private Bobson Amutuheirize attached to the 27th battalion in Rubirizi district shot to death three people including Scovia Tibakazire Bembereza, Olivia Ninsiima, and Conrad Mayi, all residents of Nkondo village and also injured three others.

On Tuesday, the soldier pleaded guilty to the charges, telling the army court that he was not sober by the time he committed the gruesome murder that saw him use 117 of the 120 rounds of ammunition with which he had earlier signed for the gun on the fateful day.

At the court sitting at Mubanda Primary School in Ryeru sub county in Rubirizi district, Lt.Col. Emmanuel Mwesigwa, found the junior officer guilty of the offence and sentenced him to 101 years for each of the three counts of murder and 60 years for each of the three counts of murder.

The division Court Martial chairman however said the punishments will run concurrently.

The UPDF has always been strict on discipline among its officers and many have either been jailed or received heavy punishments over misconduct from the army court set up under the UPDF Act of 2005.

For example in November last year, the UPDF Mountain Division Court Martial sitting at Muhoti barracks in Fort Portal sentenced a soldier to 90 years imprisonment for shooting dead two civilians.

Private Lotukei Paul attached to Bukara army detach, 06 Mountain Battalion 222 Mountain Brigade was convicted of shooting dead a 26-year-old woman and her children at Valley II bar and lodge in Kyakasinga trading centre, Nyaumba town council after an argument over a mobile phone in a bar.

Earlier, in September, the UPDF general headquarters Division Court Martial (DCM) that sat at the Marine Brigade Hqtrs in Buliisa district sentenced Pte Cephas Rubagumya to 90 years imprisonment for murder.

Masaza Cup 2020 (Bulange Group): Next Matches (Tuesday, 5th January 2021):

Buvuma Vs Busujju (12 PM)

Buweekula Vs Busiro (3 PM)

Each of the four for the five teams in Bulange group at the on-going Masaza Cup tournament at FUFA Technical Centre – Njeru have realistic chances of qualifying to the quarter-finals.

Table leaders Busiro (7 points) are hot favorites to make the grade to the last 8 stage.

Kyaggwe (5), Busujju (4) and Buweekula (4) also have chances of progressing to the quarter finals depending on the circumstances.

Islanders Buvuma who have collected a single point in 3 matches are already eliminated and will have to wait until next season to compete once again.

On Sunday, January 3, 2021, the table standings in Bulange group took a shape twist after the double header that involved an early morning kick off between Busujju and Buweekula.

Busujju, a side coached by Frank Mulindwa overcame Buweekula 2-0 with Shafic Kakande and Isaac Kiberu on target.

During the second match, Busiro despite being with 10 men rallied from a goal down to draw with Kyaggwe 1-all.

Ronald Obele combined with fellow Gaddafi teammate to score and give Kyaggwe the lead on 32 minutes.

Vastly experienced Malida Kuteesa then scored the equalizer in the 68th minute.

Busiro had been reduced to 10 men with 4 minutes left to the climax of the first half after referees Stephen Kimayo sent off Amuza Kalibwami for an elbow in the face of Moses Buga.

With Monday, 4th January 2021 being a rest day, attention and action in the Bulange group will resume on the subsequent day (Tuesday, 5th January 2021) with a double header.

Already eliminated Buvuma shall entertain Busujju during the early kick off at 12 PM.

Busujju needs maximum points over Buvuma to be certain of qualification.

Only a draw could also be good enough for Busujju provided Buweekula fails to beat Busiro in the subsequent fixture on Tuesday at 3 PM.

Busiro just needs a point to get to 8 points and top the group.

Supporters of the Forum for Democratic Change – FDC and National Resistance Movement – NRM party in Buhweju on Sunday clashed over a venue.

The FDC party leadership had organized to host their presidential candidate at Kayanja play ground where they found NRM party supporters had also organized a football match.

Evath Abenaitwe Kafureeka, the Buhweju West FDC candidate says the match was a planned move to block them from holding a rally at the playground. She accuses Hon. Ephraim Biraaro for trying to block them by organizing a football match.

FDC youthful mobilizer Beinomugisha Denmark Adios accused the NRM party leaders in the district for trying to block their rally well aware that the time had been allocated by the Electoral Commission to have their candidate Patrick Amuriat Oboi in Buhweju.

Paul Katuramu, the chairperson of the organizing committee for the football match says they had organized the match earlier before the FDC people planned to use the playground as their venue.

Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs) charged with helping urban refugees have cautioned the refugees against involving themselves in the current partisan political campaigns, if they are to stay safe from harassment by the different political party groups.

The call comes amidst reports that some urban refugees have been beaten up and harassed by locals during the current campaigns.

Sara Birungi Namuddu, the executive director, Smart Transitions, said it is no secret that many urban refugees in Kampala live in election hotspots for example; Nsambya, Kisenyi, Kansanga, Bukasa, Katwe, Mengo and Nakulabye among others”.

She said during the prevailing election campaigns, there are a lot of riots and gun violence that has happened in a series of campaign events all over major cities in Uganda.

“Many have been affected with loss of lives and livelihoods and some urban refugees have been entangled one way or another,” she added.

Bashir Kasiita, from the Refugees Innovation and Sustainable Enterprise Urban Project (RISE UP), said each refugee should be responsible for safeguarding his or her life.

“Your safety begins with you”, he said. He called upon refugees to stay away from political campaign activities.

Margaret Sentamu, the executive director, Uganda Media Women’s Association (UMWA) advised refugees to desist from donning political colour T-shirts to avoid being targeted by errant political activists.

She said civic education on elections in Uganda has been very limited, that’s why refugees are targeted.

She reminded refugees that international laws do not permit them to engage in political activities in their host countries.

The training workshop was organized to sensitise urban refugees on how to navigate through the election period peacefully.
