🧠Neurological Reserve 🧠

📢Attention brain health nerds, All people with a brain!!

The inaugural episodes of The Better Brain Podcast are in development! We are very excited to bring you inspiring content on brain health. The care and feeding of your brain is the care and feeding of you!

First Up 👉 Neurological Reserve.

🤔What is Neurological Reserve?

Think of it as the bank account for the brain.

It works like this:
We all begin with an inheritance (genetic) - this we can preserve and protect.
Then over time we add deposits, and make investments, and these grow our savings (this is the care and feeding ☺️).

Why care about it?
Because, when the rainy day comes, or when retirement comes, to have the best life we need this resource to draw upon. And it can provide resilience and resistance to endure the inevitable storms of life.

It is a big topic!
There is A LOT we can do to protect and nourish this reserve. It involves choices we make in our lives, big and small, life-long and daily choices - that preserve and protect, and add savings to, the brain bank account.

Intrigued?
This concept applies at any age. This concept applies even if you have a neurological condition like MS or Parkinson’s Disease, or a mental health condition like depression or bipolar disorder (👉in fact it is even more important to understand in these situations!!!).

🎙Looking forward to diving into this topic with you!

It is a foundational concept and at the same time highly motivating and inspiring.

🤓 Let’s nerd out together !!!

P.S. we will give you plenty of notice for when the first episodes drop! Stay tuned!! And feel free to let us know what topics you are interested in below!!!

🧠Brain Health starts with prevention (5️⃣ practical steps)🧠

PREVENTION of traumatic INJURY.
👉Repetitive injuries affect brain health over time. The most famous examples of this are the NFL players who develop CTE (Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy).
👉They are an extreme example. But the findings are eye opening.
👉Postmortem autopsies of 111 NFL players brains, found that 110 of them had changes typical of CTE. That is more than 99%. (doi:10.1001/jama.2017.8334)
👉Most of us are not NFL players, but we do risk head injury in our daily lives and can take some simple steps to prevent it.

Here are 5️⃣ practical steps to protect your brain supported by the CDC in the US.

1. Wear a helmet when you are cycling, skate boarding, downhill skiing/snow boarding, working on a construction site, playing contact sports etc…. You can still get a concussion with a helmet on, but a helmet limits the extent of blunt force trauma to the brain. (You are better off with a concussion than major brain trauma).
2. Wear your seat belt when traveling in a motor vehicle.
3. Never drive under the influence of alcohol or other drugs.
4. Prevent falls. Take appropriate cautions at your worksite to prevent falls. For older people, it is wise to take fall prevention precautions such as grab bars in the shower and by the toilet. Medications can play a role in falls - check with your doctor if you are concerned about yours.
5. Protect small children from head injury through practical measures like window guards and safety gaits at high risk areas like stairs.
