We headed out for Amy's first ever ice fishing adventure on Saturday! A group of us went out on a smaller pond in NE Iowa to enjoy a day on the hardwater. After drilling a couple of holes, it didn't take long for us to find some fish. We set up the Yukon XT and Livescope and got to fishing!

I still have a few things to figure out with this new unit but I am looking forward to spending some more time on the ice this winter. We have got a couple of fun trips planned in the upcoming month to chase after some Crappie, Walleye and other fish species!

Every year around Thanksgiving we have a bunch of family in town. Usually we just hunt Thanksgiving morning, but this year I took a few extra days off of work and decided it'd be a good time to try and take some family hunting.

After scouting the night before, I had found a nice pocket of birds. There was a good mix with a lot of divers and the wind was going to be in a good direction to set an a frame up on shore in the cove they were using.

After starting off the day harvesting a couple of ring necks, we ended up shooting a few mallards, shovler, bluebill, merg and even a goose which is what the Texas boys really wanted to shoot.

I always enjoy the mornings when I get to take people that haven't hunted a ton out into the field. It just makes it even better that those people were my cousin and uncle. We had a lot of laughs and got to watch Ace do his thing on a cool November morning.

This past weekend we had a tragedy that hit close to home. A gentleman set out to spend a day on the water chasing what we all are passionate about. Any time you take a vessel out on the water, safety is the number one priority. No bird is worth one’s life. Prayers to the friends and family of the man who unfortunately did not make it home on Saturday.

Dad and I headed out with our invisimans to a spot that we had seen birds using the past weekend. We both had a few gun issues. Dad's firing pin wasn't striking his first shell and I had a dud shell that had gotten wet that left a wad stuck in my barrel. Thankfully I didn't fire off another round.

It was a great morning though with the old man. I always enjoy getting to spend time in the field with him. We've taught eachother a thing or two throughout the years but spending mornings in the blind with him are ones that I cherish the most.

We ended up shooting 5 different species of ducks. Although we should've had a few more birds in had, we got to watch birds work all morning while sharing stories of our hunts together throughout the years.

The story of my first bow buck:

On October 31st we were getting a cold front here in Iowa. I had a couple very nice deer on camera that had been patterning well on the fronts. I decided to take a half day off of work and drive south to our family farm.

This farm was partially owned by my Grandpa who passed away this past summer in June. Grandpa and I would always talk about my adventures at the farm from deer to turkey hunts.

The afternoon of the 31st I set up in a waterway I had seen deer using. I got in the tree by 230 and by 3 I started my rattling sequences. I would do these every 20 minutes or so. A couple of grunts then lead into some light rattling.

At 530 I grunted and rattled. About 5 minutes later I look up to see a buck running across an open field to my west. The deer stopped at the edge of the fence right at the end of the terrace I was sitting on. He ended up jumping the fence on the north side of the tree line I was in.

I heard him hit a scrape about 30 yards away from me that I couldn’t see, I figured he would come right down the waterway for a 20 yard chip shot. He ended up going east and I caught him out of the corner of my eye. I quickly (but loudly) got my bow through a Y in the tree and leaned forward while drawing back. I had my pin set for 25 yards, but I had ranged the spot I could shoot off to my side at 30.

He stepped into that opening and I let it fly. He was slightly quartered away. I could see both the impact spot and the exit of the deer. He ran about 40 yards then slowly walked back to the west.

After cutting his blood I decided to back and review the footage from my GoPro. I knew I had hit him slightly back but felt confident in my shot. I decided to give him the evening and took Friday off of work. My good friends Cole and Dylan came down to help me track him.

After speaking with the neighbor that he went into the night before, we crossed the fence into the CRP. We were tracking blood for a few hundred yards then couldn’t find anything. We ended up jumping a different 8 pointer but at the time my heart sank, it was further back than I thought. We searched more in the CRP and along the creek thinking he would go to water and couldn’t find anything.

In the following days I had sent messages out and stopped at a couple of the neighbors places asking if they find him that I’d really like to recover him. Sunday night I got the phone call. The CRP he ran into was extremely tough to track in. We were within 100 yards of this deer and I fully believe he expired in the overnight that I let him lay.

Writing this isn’t easy. I had made it my goal to shoot not only a nice buck but my first bow buck on grandpas farm in memory of him. Although I can’t sit down at the table and talk to him about this adventure, I know he got the best seat in the house watching it.

Bow tag punched for 2024 👊🏻
