Built on the land of Vinícius de Moraes, Ronaldo and Gisele Bündchen, the Brasília was neither melodic, fast or beautiful... but ‘she’ surely had some Samba.
The super noisy 60hp 1,6L motor could barely reach a speed of 130km/h (even after the 2 carburetors upgrade that gave ‘her’ an additional 5hp) and it would last almost 25 seconds from 0 to 100km/h, but speed wasn’t a requirement back then and the sales of the Volkswagen do Brasil project were a success amongst people from all ages and segments.
This rear ride hatchback had the impossible mission of replacing the Beetle (the Brazilians call it “Fusca”), but we might say that, 1 million sales in 9 years (95% in Brasil) makes it, undoubtedly, a historic car.

ℹ️ Both the and the huge success since de beginning of the 1970s led other brands to realize that they where getting behind in the new massive segment of the supermini cars.
For these reason, Audi decided to release the new 3-door hatchback Audi 50 in 1974 - a relatively cheap and compact car with sober lines equipped with either a 1,1L or a 1,3L petrol engines.
Audi 50 sold more than 180,000 units, but it was outsold by the VW rebadge version: the Polo MK1 (500,000 units).
Due to this, the Audi board decided to focus on bigger and more expensive cars and to discontinue their compact hatchback, while the VW Polo is still a best-seller, after numerous generations.

Ferrari Dino 246GT/GTS, 1969-1974 🇮🇹

ℹ️ The Dino 246GT Berlinetta was an upgrade to the 206GT. It appeared in 1969 with a 2.4L V6 mid-engine, delivering 192hp (more 32hp than is predecessor).
In ‘71, Ferrari added the GTS Spider version to attract those who like to feel the wind blowing in their heads.
Ferrari sold 3,761 of these beauties (2487 GT and 1274 GTS).
Back then, you could by one of these for roughly £5,500 in the UK (it would cost you a bit more than a Porsche 911S).
