PRESS STATEMENT

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Yobe Council has expressed dismay over the unpatriotic attitudes of some filling station owners and operators in Damaturu, Yobe State capital and other Local Government Areas of the state over today's creation of artificial scarcity of the petroleum (PMS) as well as increase of the pump price.

The Union is greatly concerned about the plights of the peace loving citizens of the state.

We're, therefore calling on the security agencies, government authorities, the regulatory agencies as well as all relevant stakeholders to promptly take necessary measures to reverse this ugly situation that is capable of ruining the economy of the people. We may describe it as sabotage to Nigeria's democratic process.

The Union will continue to monitor the situation and update the citizens on any positive development while urging all to remain calm as the situation will be managed amicably.

THE MEETING PRESIDED OVER BY THE CHAIRMAN, COMRADE RAJAB MOHAMMED ISMAIL, SECRETARY, ALHASSAN SULE MAMUDO AND OTHER EXECUTIVES.

IN HIS REMARKS CHAIRMAN, CONGRATULATED YOBEANS, SECURITY PERSONNEL, INEC AND MEMBERS OF THE PRESS INCLUDING FOR A HITCH FREE AND PEACEFUL CONDUCT OF THE JUST CONCLUDED GENERAL ELECTIONS.

2. CHAIRMAN RAISED CONCERNED OVER THE POOR POWER SUPPLY BEEN EXPERIENCE IN THE STATE RECENTLY LAMENTING THAT RESIDENTS HARDLY GET 10 HOURS POWER SUPPLY WHICH PUT ENORMOUS PRESSURE ON PEOPLE TRYING TO ACCESS WATER FOR THEIR DAILY USES AND CALLED ON THE YEDC TO IMMEDIATELY REVERSE THE UGLY TREND INORDER TO REMEDY THE SITUATION.

3. CHAIRMAN SPOKE ON THE NEED FOR MEMBERS TO PAY THEIR CHECK UP DUES REGULARLY SO AS TO ENABLE THE UNION CARRY OUT SOME OF IT RESPONSIBILITIES, THIS IS IN ADDITION TO PAYING FOR THEIR IDENTITY CARD WHICH MANY ARE YET TO PAY.

4. THE ISSUE OF NAWOJ ELECTION ALSO CAME UP THOUGH NO DATE IS FIX TO FOR THE ELECTION BUT PREPARATION TOWARDS THAT IS IN EFFECT.

5. NUJ MEDIA GAMES EQUALLY CAME UP DURING DELIBERATIONS WHERE CONGRESS AGREED FOR THE GAMES TO BE HOLD FROM TUESDAY, 20th TO 25th JUNE, 2023. IT WAS ALSO AGREED THAT LETTERS WILL BE SEND TO PARTICAPATING AGENCIES SUCH AS POLICE, IMMIGRATION SERVICE , NSCDC, NBA, FRSC MILITARY AMONG OTHERS.

6. DURING THE MEETING, CONGRESS RESOLVED TO SUPPORT THE ESTABLISHMENT OF NUJ CHAPEL AT FUGA.

COMMUNIQUE ISSUED AT THE END OF NUJ CONGRESS MEETING HELD ON TUESDAY, 17 JANUARY 2023.

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Yobe Council under the Chairmanship of Comrade Rajab Muhammad held a congress on Tuesday, 17 January 2023 at the NUJ Press Center along Muhammadu Buhari International Cargo Airport Road Damaturu, which was well attended by the members across different chapels of the council.

The council resolved as follows;

1. Congress appeal to the members of the general public especially those who are yet to collect their Permanent Voters’ Card (PVC) to do so for them to exercise their franchise during the forthcoming general elections.

2. The congress has equally appealed to the entire working journalists in the state to remain apolitical by observing the principles of objectivity, balance and farness in the course of discharging their constitutional responsibilities.

3. The meeting stressed the need for political actors in the state to prioritize issue-based campaign and play the game by the rules to avoid overheating the polity and ensure hitch free elections.

4. During the meeting, the congress nominated five delegates that will represent the council at the special delegates conference in Kano form 24th to 27th January 2023.

5. The congress also fixed March 2023 as the dateline for the revalidation of membership Identification Card (ID) reminding those who are yet to paid the required fees to do so unfailingly.

6. The congress equally acknowledged the withdrawal of *JAKADIYA CHAPEL* from the Yobe State Council necessitated by their inability to meet up with the Union constitutional requirement.

7. Finally, the congress constituted a fifteen member Media Games Committee under the chairmanship of Ahmed Kagana Amshi (Swan Chairman) and mandated it to plan for the 2023 edition.

Yobe NUJ honors Gov Buni with award of Excellence

Yobe State Governor, Hon Mai Mala Buni has been honoured with an award of Excellence by the Nigeria Union of Journalists NUJ.

Speaking after receiving the award presented to him during an interactive session with the journalists in the state, at the Banquet Hall, Government house Damaturu, Governor who appreciated the gesture described the session as first of its kind in the state charging them to improve on their reportage of government projects and programs for the people of the state.

He disclosed that the media is one of the organs of promoting democracy and good governance to meet the yearnings and aspirations of the people in the state, adding, that democracy cannot work without the effort of the media as the mechanism for feedback.

As Yobe moves to recovery process, Buni urges journalists in the state to continue to keep people informed about the government projects that have a positive impact on them such as health care service delivery, education, portable drinking water, electricity, markets, and airports among others, assuring Government would continue to train and retrain its staff in the civil service for optimum benefit.

He calls on the journalists in the state to adhere to the ethics of the profession in disseminating information to the public assuring to continue to provide conducive environment for all.

The governor also approved the immediate extension of transmission time for the State Broadcasting Corporation YBC to 10pm.

Earlier speaking, the Commissioner of Home Affairs, Information, and Culture, Alhaji Muhammad Lamin represented by the Director of Information Services, Hajiya Husna Ibrahim appreciates the effort of the Governor for giving the journalists in the state the opportunity to interact with him.

She assured the Governor of bridging the gap between the government and the governed by disseminating government policies and programs to the grassroots.

Hajiya Husna also commended the Governor's commitment to digitalizing the two state-owned media houses, empowerment, training, and retraining its staff adding the state will soon go digital.

In their separate remarks, the General Managers of YTV, YBC, State Printing Cooperation, Sun Shine FM and NTA commended the effort of Governor Buni for initiating various developmental projects that touch the lives of the people across the state and promised to work hand-in-hand with the state government in disseminating its policies and programs to the people.

Highlights of the occasion are the presentation of the award of excellence to the Governor by NUJ chairman, Rajab Mohamed, and questions and answers session.

THE CONGRESS MEETING WITH HANDFUL OF MEMBERS IN ATTENDANCE WAS PRESIDED OVER BY THE CHAIRMAN,COMRADE RAJAB MOHAMMED AND OTHER EXECUTIVES INCLUDING THE ZONAL SECRETARY NORTH EAST SULAIMAN GIMBA.

ISSUES RAISED DURING THE MEETING INCLUDE, BRIEFING MEMBERS ON THE OUTCOME OF NEC MEETING HELD IN BENIN CITY, EDO STATE.

Yobe NUJ greets Muslims On Eid Adha

Yobe state council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists Felicitates with Muslims On Eid Al Adha 2022 celebrations.

Eid Al Adha is the second most important festival celebrated by Islamic community where Muslims Care for those in need in their various community.

The yobe council emphasizes need for all Muslims to use the period for sober reflection and be their brothers keepers.

As the 2023 election draws closer, the Union urged politicians and other stakeholders to ensure a process devoid of chaos and confusion as witnessed in the past.

The NUJ then enjoined eligible voters to take advantage of extension of Contentious Voter Registration by INEC to enable them elect credible leaders .
The union called on the media to exercise caution in handling sensitive issues aimed at ensuring a virile and stable society.

PRESS STATEMENT

The Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) Yobe State Council is appealing to it's members to sustain the ethical practice of balancing their report before publishing or going on air in order not to deceive the public especially at this period of party primaries.

The NUJ is also urging the political parties and the aspirants not to consider it as do or die affair, shun politics of thuggery and movement with dangerous weapons .

The NUJ members are also cautioned to be very conscious while discharging their professional duties especially in crowdy places for safety.

The Union is wishing all the best of luck while informing our newsmakers that henceforth all press briefings will be holding at no other place than the NUJ Secretariat, Damaturu.

It is a natural disaster from the almighty Allah and pray for the repose of the departed souls.

We commend His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Yobe State Hon. Mai Mala Buni for the support to the victims through the Executive Secretary of the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Dr. Mohammed Goje.

The Union is calling on all the relevant agencies to urgently wake up to their responsibilities in order to cushion the sufferings of our dear citizens.

The NUJ will keep monitoring the distribution, sales and hoarding of the product with the aim of ensuring availability and accessibility.

YOBE NUJ MONITORS CONSTITUENCY PROJECTS
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Yobe Council State Council has commenced monitoring constituency projects in Yobe to ensure accountability and transparency.

The Chairman of the Council, Mr. Rajab Mohammed disclosed this on Wednesday in Potiskum Local Government while inspecting projects facilitated by Senator Ibrahim Bomai representing Yobe South Senatorial District.

He said the council was impressed with the numerous, people oriented projects carried out by the Senator in Fune, Fika, Potiskum and Nangere Local Government Areas.

According to him, the projects inspected include digital Centres in College of Administration and Management Technology Potiskum, Government Science and Technical College Damagum.

Others were in GSS Mamudo, GSS Fika, Fika, GSS Jajere and Government Day Secondary School Dazigau.

The chairman said the team also visited construction site of Maternal and Child Health Care Centre Kukar Gadu, Fika LGA, construction of Maternal and Child Health Care Centre in Dawasa, Nangere LGA among others.

The team visited some roads constructed in Tandari, Misau road, Gadan Talakawa road, ‘Yan Kuka, Jujin Osi, Arikime (Bomai road), Fika Emir’s palace road and Mamman Ali cemetery Road.

The team also visited Fika-Gadaka water channelization project, Fika LGA, Potiskum Water Reticulation Project, Construction sites of solar powered borehole in Tsohuwar kasuwa, Potiskum LGA, Solar-powered borehole in Jajere and Kolere in Fune LGA and rehabilitated solar-powered borehole in Ngalda, Fika LGA among others.

The Chairman commended the lawmaker for facilitating the projects and assured to continue to monitor the performance of all political office holders transparency and accountability to ensure good governance in the state.

NUJ CHAIRMAN VISITS NECAS

Determined to ensure proper and timely dissemination of information to the citizens, the Chairman Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Yobe State Council Comrade Rajab Mohammed on Tuesday paid a courtesy visit on Chairman NECAS Yobe State, Alhaji Nuhu Baba Hassan (Zanna Soloma) of Gujba, where he commended the NECAS Chairman for the success recorded within the period under review.

The NUJ Chair Rajab Mohammed, Chairman moreover used the forum to applaud through listing the achievements of NECAS covered by the media practitioners such as the humanitarian assistance to over 200 IDPs in Gujba Local Area through the provision of writing materials that includes Books, mathematical sets, uniforms, sandals, School bags among others.

He also highlighted on some of the achievement recorded by the Zanna Soloma of Gujba, since becoming the Chairman of NECAS, adding that over 26,000 farmers in the state have benefited from NECAS intervention with about 55,000 hectares of land cultivated for rainy and dry seasion farming, across the 17 Local Government Areas of the state.

He appealed on well meaning individuals in the society to emulate Alhaji Nuhu Baba Hassan to cushion the sufferings of the masses not to allow the burden on government alone.

Responding the state Chairman of NECAS Alhaji Nuhu Baba Hassan, thanked the NUJ Chairman and his team for the visit and assured to continue publishing all the activities of my NECAS saying that the Journalists are the mirrors of the society.

Nuhu said that he is proud of his achievements that is now glaring and being noted by members of the press adding that it will encourage them to do more.

NECAS also disclosed that his leadership has succeeded in procuring 70 John Deere madeTractors for mechanized farming in both rainy and dry season farming operations respectively.
"Many farmers are now becoming richer courtesy of NECAS Yobe State".

"Provision of fertilizers, insecticide herbicides, water pomp for irrigation farming among others he added.

He commended Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni, for the support and encouragement continously rendered to NECAS Yobe State.

Despite the hitches of the barbaric Boko Haram insurgency menace for the past years, however the following achievements were made:-

INFRASTRUCTURAL DEVELOPMENT:
Infrastructural development enhances our day to day activities. The Executive Governor of Yobe State, Hon. Mai Mala Buni (Chiroman Gujba) has carried out series of roads & drainages constructions, rehabilitations & provisions of the following: Construction of stone based 46km Nguru town, Balanguwa–Kumaganam in Nguru and Yusufari Local government Area is currently ongoing. Equally, construction of 18km road and bridge from Danchuwa - Bula up to Garin Bingel and 12km access road from Damagum - Gubana is currently ongoing.
Furthermore, 2.6km township road at Potiskum, Rehabilitation of 50km road from Damaturu - Buni-Gari,Dr. Shehu Sule School of Nursing and Midwifery benefitted 1.5km road& 3km concrete drainage within the premises. Rehabilitation of Jaji – Maji– Karasuwa road in Karasuwa Local Government Area was completed successfully. Construction of 25.5km dual carriage road from Damaturu – Kalallawa that linked with cargo international airport has reached advanced stage. The construction of 10km& 5.3km asphalt based road from Chimbusko -Tagali and road linking Potiskum Road – Gujba road in Damaturu is also ongoing. As part of the engagement in infrastructural development, township road and drainages of 3.2km and 2km were executed in Gashua, Geidam and Nguru town.
Complete renovation of 3nos Zonal Offices of Internal Revenue and IBB State Secretariat Complex with procurement of office furniture at Office of the Head of Service and 2 other Ministries were carried out. On the other hand non-Governmental organisations like NLC Secretariat was constructed to ease their activities, while supplies & installations of 6nos air-conditioners were provided to NUJ Yobe State Chapter.

WATER SUPPLY:
In the field of water supply, as the saying goes ‘Water is Life‘ the State Government embarked on the rehabilitation and conversion of boreholes from mono to motorised up to solar driven system at Ngurmai, Shishiwaji and 4 (four) rural boreholes in Gulani, Bade communities as well as Dami Village in Fika Local Government Areas respectively.Drilling, installations and repairs of 3nos boreholes at Jauro Nini, Pompo and Mahdiya villages in Gujba and Baban Tsangaya, Dabugu wards in Damaturu Local Government were also carried out. Upgrading and expansion of Buni Gari water supply system at Gujba Local Government is currently in progress. Furthermore Damaturu water supply scheme has been reactivated after many years of in-actions and it’s now receiving attention and will be completed soon.

HOUSING DEVELOPMENT & URBAN PLANNING:
In terms of Housing development in the State, 2300 units of houses out of 2350 was completed, while the remains housing units have reached an advanced stage of completion. For those who want to know more about our areas, digital/internet mapping of 5 major towns in Yobe State i.e. Damaturu, Potiskum, Gashua, Nguru & Geidam have been made for easy location and easy look on our natural features.

TRANSPORT AND ENERGY:
In line with rural transformation agenda of His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Yobe State. Hon Mai Mala Buni (Chiroman Gujba), re –electrification & upgrading of 3nos Estates in Damaturu namely: - Sani Daura, Ben Kalio and Dabo Aliyu Estates were completed respectively. Extension, connection to National Grid and provision of transformers to some villages and 15 communities were also carried out. Provision/ installation of 180 units of single arm solar street light at Don Etiebet Estate and NYSC Orientation Camp at Dazigau was successfully executed.
The construction of Yobe International Cargo Airport has reached advanced stage of completion with the supply and installation of airport equipment, provision/installation of 284 units and 142 units of double arm solar, extension of ITC line, purchase of aircraft rescue and fire fighting vehicles and supply and installation of LLWAS as well as procurement of ranway lightening system which were completely effected.
To ease the transport of citizens within and outside the State, the State Governor, Hon. Mai Mala Buni (Chiroman Gujba) purchased 20 Toyota Hiace 2.7ltr standard roofs with manual transmission for Yobe Line Corporation.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT:
Economic development sector is also one of the key areas receiving the attention of this Government. In this regard Government has given a top priority to this sector for its teeming population to directly enjoy the dividend of democracy by construction of markets across the 3 (three) senatorial zones within the state.
As a result of this, constructions of modern markets across the 5 (five) major economic cities were carried out to boost the commercial activities. Thus the construction of Damaturu, Potiskum and Nguru modern market have now reached an advanced stage of completion, while that of Gashua has been completed awaiting commissioning. The Fertilizer Blending Company in Gujba & Prestressed Pole Company in Damaturu which were under-going rehabilitation have been completed and awaiting test running and commissioning as well.

HEALTH DEVELOPMENT:
In the field of Health development, as the saying goes “Health is Wealth” the construction, furnishing, equipping, rehabilitations and up-grading of over 70 PHC (Primary Health Centres) across the State were carried out. Supplying, equipping & furnishing of State-of-the-art 4D ultra-sound scan machines, medical equipment, new born survival programme scheme &upgrading of 6 laboratory equipment to Women & Children Hospital, Specialists Hospital Buni Yadi, Damaturu, Potiskum Gashua, Geidam, Damagum and Government House Clinic were completed under innovative cost recovery scheme.
Furthermore, Remodelling and procurement of Special Baby-care Unit (SBCU), 1 digital X-ray machine and intensive care unit (ICU) medical equipment were carried out in State Specialist Hospital Damaturu. Supply of equipment to newly constructed neonatal unit at Specialist Hospital in Gashua & Potiskum as well as procurement of basic laboratory equipment to Government House Clinic were completed. The construction of 2bedroom capacity with isolation centres at State Specialist Hospital (SSH), supply & installation of electronic medical records (EMR) & communication system at State University Teaching Hospital, State Specialist Hospital, Damaturu, Potiskum and Gashua with provision of bed/mattresses to all hospitals across the State. Construction/procurement of 200 bed capacity in isolation centre, 150 capacity lecture theatre and 500 litres sewage disposal truck as well as upgrading of 128 slide city scanning machines to carry out advanced investigation CT renal, coronary angiography and CT colonoscopy at Yobe State University Teaching Hospital, Damaturu.
Th State Government equally constructed 1 story building of 2 bedroom capacity as student hostel at Dr. Shehu Sule School Nursing& Midwifery Damaturu. The State also procured 60 tricycle ambulances to enhance any emergency referral & transport scheme across the State. It also Procured 8,800 units of customized Mama Kits & Bags.
With regards to enhancement of Human Resource for Health by the Government of His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Yobe State, Hon. Mai Mala Buni (Chiroman Gujba), more than 5 Medical Doctors, 3 Senior Consultants, 117 qualified Nurses and 416 staff of various cadres were employed to make health care better and also 5 Specialist Hospitals were improved to standard level to provide quality health care services in State.

AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT:
Agriculture is the main stay of the State Economy in over 80% o the populace engaged in the form of the agricultural activity as a means of livelihood. Adequate attention has been accorded to agricultural production under His Excellency Hon. Mai Mala Buni (Chiroman Gujba) in other to enhance food self-sufficiency and insure food security in the State. This is attested right from the inception of this administration through the organization of agricultural summit in the year 2020. So far the Ministry has awarded contract for the establishment of livestock development center at Jakusko/Nasari Grazing reserved. This project is aimed at curtailing the mass movement of livestock herders from northern to southern animal husbandry. The following project are currently under construction:
1. Small ruminant Multiplication Unit
2. Milking Center and milking parlour
3. Pasture Development area
4. Veterinary Clinic/Human Unit
5. Artificial Insemination Unit
6. Herdsmen Settlement
7. Constitution of earth Dam and Aquaculture
8. Drilling of Hybrid Bore-holes
9. Primary School
10. Access Road
11. Electrification
12. Skills Acquisition Center
Similarly, the Ministry in partnership with Chad Basin Development Authority currently undertakes the revival of lava irrigation scheme at Bursari L.G.A. about 200 hectares of land has so far been cleared ready for the dry season cultivation of wheat. Expansion work on the field is still in progress and is expected remarkable progress will be achieved by the end of the year 2022.
In the same vein the Ministry in collaboration with World Bank are working for the take-off of Livestock productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) Project. The project is designed to provide support to livestock farmers to boost diary, beef and to enhance sheep and goat production. The Ministry in collaboration with African Union Development Agency (AUDA) is also working towards the introduction of ‘’Innovative Strengthening of Smallholder Farmers Capabilities Towards Productive Land restoration amid Covid-19 in Nigeria’’.
The N-cares programme has enumerated 238 communities targeting 16,184 beneficiaries aimed at providing livelihood support to the most vulnerable in the society.

EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT:
This sector received the highest recognition by declaring State of emergency in the State. Education is a backbone to any development; this sector was prioritised whereby even State education trust fund was set up so that the citizens would enjoy a conducive learning atmosphere. As the menace of COVID – 19 globally, procurement of preventive materials to 6 (six) State owned Tertiary Institutions namely, Yobe State University Damaturu, CABS Potiskum, COAGA Gashua, State Polytechnic Geidam, Legal & Islamic College Nguru & College of Agriculture Gujba were provided.
In the science based learning, the procurement of laboratory equipment for remedial programmes was successfully completed. To consider gender equality and improved quality of Education in the State, purchased of teaching aids, reference textbooks & computers to all Technical colleges (ie) Government Science Technical College and Government Girls Senior Technical College were being made. Construction of 8nos of block wall fence & barbwire in 7 MEGA schools and SUBEB permanent site and electrification of 7nos of MODEL schools to national grids were currently on-going. Procurement of 9300 units of 2seaters pupil furniture were carried out as well as renovation of 22 block of 45 classrooms, 22 offices and store at headquarters were equally currently on-going.
It is worthy to note that under the able leadership of Hon. Mai Mala Buni (Chiroman Gujba) 233 Yobe State Students benefitted a sponsorship to study various courses at Glocal University in India and 131 Bar I & II Law School students gained sponsorship at various campuses across the nation. It may also interest to note that sponsor of over 200 individual students studying Ph.D. M.Sc. &B.Sc. at different Universities abroad were carried out. In this regards, special intervention to sponsor 10 college of Nursing Lecturers on M.Sc. programmes at various Universities within and outside the country was equally carried out. So far out of 7350 shortlisted scholarships, first trench of over 1000 students were paid while the payment for others is currently ongoing.

HUMAN DEVELOPMENT:
These sectors were touched thoroughly because development can easily be projected everywhere. About 3400 rural women in all the 17 Local Government Areas were paid the sum of N20, 000.00 each as cash grant which amounts to N68million. Another 1500 rural women were given N50, 000.00 each as a start-up grant for them to sustain an average living which costs Government the sum of N76million. Within Damaturu, 150 bags of food were distributed to the needy in the community. Another 7000 bags of rice, 1000 gallons of vegetable oil, 1000 cartoons of tomatoes paste, 1500 sleeping mats, 3000 wrappers, 1500 cartons of spaghetti, 1000 blankets and bales of clothes were distribution to the victims of insurgency at Geidam town.
The Government of His Excellency, Hon. Mai Mala Buni in its goodwill donated over 1260 bags of rice during iftar (fasting) in Ramadan period across the 17 Local Government Areas. N1million was provided to an orphanage (Yatim Care Foundation) as feeding assistance. As part of an early preparation, the Pilgrim Commission has already enrolled 521 intending pilgrims for the year 2022 Hajj exercise and vaccinated against the deadly COVID 19 diseases. On the other hand, the Commission, engaged in mass enlightenment exercise on the newly introduced Hajj Saving Scheme (HSS) on the preparation of next Hajj exercise. For this purposes, Yobe State Pilgrims Commission received an appreciation letter from NAHCON for the commitment demonstrated.
The current administration also approved the total sum of N876,399,800.97 for the payment of over 700 number of local Government retirees in the year under review.

CONCLUSION:
