Daily COVID deaths and cases need to stop being reported
Back in the early days of the pandemic, I think that it was important that these numbers were advised to the general public for them to understand just how the pandemic was being handled by the governments across Australia, particularly before vaccinations. But how is the reporting of the numbers helping anyone today?
Let’s start with the daily cases. For most of Australia, and I’m not counting WA because Dictator McGowan doesn’t count, the daily numbers aren’t accurate at all. Experts are saying that the true daily numbers appear to be 5, maybe 10 times the numbers that are being reported. This is due to the fact that people do not want to wait 8 hours in line for a PCR test, and in addition to that, lack of Rapid Antigen Tests mean that people cannot get their hands on them to actually know if they are infected. In this case, they recognise that the symptoms that they have are more than likely COVID, and they self-isolate until they no longer have symptoms.
The QLD government indicated in one of their press releases that there will not be a reduction in the number of places where PCR tests were being done over the Christmas break, but this wasn’t true. Many sites had closed down, leaving large numbers people to sit in ultra long queues, with many being turned away after 8 hours of waiting. It caused pandemonium, and another fail in the Palachook government’s handling of the pandemic.
Let’s now look at daily deaths….Why are we still reporting them? Back in 2019, there was in excess of 4000 people that passed away during the flu season, estimated to be much higher when you include pneumonia in the mix. Was there a reporting of the daily deaths in the middle of the flu season? No. There seems to be so much emphasis on the fact that people are dying (in much smaller numbers thankfully due to the vaccination rollout) than would have potentially been the case without the vaccinations. While any death is sad, and these people should be remembered, however, we have to also understand that any death that isn’t COVID related at the moment is any less important than those who have passed from COVID.
There is no doubt that COVID is a virus that is serious, however, the signs are looking good that we are finally beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel. We need to wind back the reporting, learn to live with this as a society for however long it takes for it to get to endemic stage. It doesn’t help the community at large if the governments continue to change the goal posts at every opportunity, and in the same breath, the media just butchering every ounce of the pandemic as well.
The word of the pandemic should be “CONFUSION”, because that is all that the governments Australia wide have given to the community at large. There hasn’t been a consistent approach to this pandemic for the last 2 years. It has allowed anti-vaxxers to become very vocal and point out all the flaws in government policies, it has lead to huge anti-lockdown protests, and in general, created a massive divide that will take many years (if at all ) to repair.
Remember the time when we were the envy of the world when we locked down quickly and were able to contain the numbers, to then become a laughing stock because we were slow on the vaccine rollout and continued with lockdowns, while the rest of the world began to open up. And before you turn around and say “well they have had larger numbers of people dying from the virus”, their populations in many cases are far higher than Australia’s, so that only stands to reason.
The last two years has been a huge power play for all governments across the country. We have seen the absolute worst in all of our leaders and I’m not too sure we can ever recover fully from this sh*t-show we have all been witnesses to.
I would love to see things get back to normality, however, I’m not sure we will see that any time soon. Fingers crossed 2022 is the end of this f**kery.
