On Tuesday February 28, a 48-year-old woman named Susan LaForge was killed in Billings Montana.

Police responded to a 911 call from a house in the midtown neighborhood Tuesday afternoon and found Susan’s body inside. Her death was initially ruled “suspicious” but Billings PD have since announced that they are investigating Susan’s case as a homicide.

The only person of interest in her case, 30-year-old Terrell Spotted Wolf, was arrested this morning. No other details have been released.

Billings, Montana is a dangerous place to be a Native woman. In my experience, Billings PD are known locally for being racist and corrupt, with an especially bad track record with Indigenous people.

This past summer, 2 Indigenous women were found dead in Billings. 38-year-old Arshanda Knows His Gun was found in the Yellowstone River on June 13 2022. The medical examiner said there were no signs of foul play and ruled her cause of death as drowning. But the deaths of Indigenous women, even under suspicious circumstances, are often ruled as “no foul play” or “accidental” by the medical examiner with not much investigation.

And then on July 3, 24-year-old Jessie Guardipee was found stabbed to death in her home. Her home which, 2 days after Jessie’s death, was set on fire. Police told local news that they do not believe the house fire to be linked to the murder. Police said that they were aware of a suspect, and the identity of the suspect seems to be known in the community, but no arrests have ever been made.

Hopefully Susan will not be another woman killed in Billings whose killer is allowed to go free.

Susan was a loving mother, grandmother, and auntie. She is remembered as someone who would always show up to help and expect nothing in return. Below is a link to Susan’s family’s GoFundMe for funeral expenses as well as a fund for Susan’s 12-year-old son. Please help if you can.

JUSTICE FOR SUSAN LAFORGE

Just a few hours northwest of where Gabby Petito vanished, Selena Not Afraid went missing on New Years Day 2020. Selena was a 16-year-old girl who was getting a ride home from a night spent at a friend’s house. Under suspicious circumstances, Selena vanished after being left behind at a rest stop.

Selena’s case bears some similarities to Gabby’s. Both women found themselves riding in a van out in the prairie with the wrong people/person. Both women were recorded on video shortly before they went missing (Gabby in police interactions and Selena in a mysterious snapchat video taken from the rest stop where she was last seen) Both were beautiful young women who disappeared against their will.

But, like many other Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Selena did not get what Gabby did.

On the day Gabby was reported missing, police sent her van to be processed for evidence and attempted to question the person she was last seen with.

The van in which Selena was last seen has never been processed for evidence. There is no indication that of any of the passengers have been questioned by police.

When Selena went missing, her picture was not circulating on every national news website. was not trending on twitter.

On January 20 2020 Selena’s body was found less than half a mile away from the rest stop. Later that day, the sheriff issued a statement that Selena died of accidental hypothermia. No foul play. Case closed. Selena’s case has been under investigation with the FBI with no updates so far.

Gabby’s body was found a few days ago. Yesterday her death was ruled a homicide. In the investigation that will ensue, there will be significant efforts to bring answers for Gabby’s family and justice for Gabby. The news will keep up with Gabby Petito. When they are able, law enforcement will enthusiastically arrest Brian Laundrie and Gabby Petito’s case will go to trial. The system will treat Gabby and her family with the respect and diligence that any victim of violence deserves.

In the 10 days since she was reported missing, there have been more resources and attention dedicated to Gabby Petito than there have been for Selena Not Afraid in over a year.

Native American women face murder rates that are more than 10 times the national average and their stories are still ignored by media.
