Sound is more than what we hear in our ears, it’s what we feel with our entire body! Instead of something to absorb with dense panels and soft furnishings, what if we embraced sound as a design tool that could better the human experience? We’re talking everything from vibro-acoustic nightclubs and generative music to ancient Egyptian sound chambers. Get ready to listen in an entirely new way!

Thanks so much to and for making this episode so spectacular and for all you do to inspire creatives to embrace sound in the built environment.

What do you get when a chef, a neuroscientist, an interior designer, and a wearable tech researcher walk into a showroom?? An incredible event, in “Alternative Design” style!

Ignite the Senses was a multisensory event in our Atlanta Showroom focused on sparking creativity and ultimately exploring how create places to belong. We invited designers to go on a “sensory stroll” where they were surprised with gastronomic bites like “scrambled eggs ice cream” and a shot of vodka literally taken from a rose! We threw them in a Poppin Pod to take a “Color Bath” after their Color Test revealed what portion of the electromagnetic spectrum they needed in that moment.

But we didn’t stop there! We had former ADP guest give a keynote on how we can unlock better emotional outcomes through the senses, furniture, and the built environment. To top it all off, we asked , , and to join us on stage for a forward thinking panel discussion on how designers can rethink space to create places to belong through multisensory experiences.

Didn’t catch the event live? Check out our next episode of Alternative Design to hear our panel discussion!

Meet the Producer, Andrew Reid!

This gentleman is the producer, audio engineer, storyteller, composer and behind the scenes master of the Alternative Design podcast! He’s also my partner! 😉

I actually came up with the podcast idea because this guy already had a ton of experience producing podcast shows as a side hustle and thought we could moonlight the project together! What an amazing ride it’s been so far.

Fun Fact: Andrew is a beer aficionado and composes every piece of music you hear in the episodes from scratch.

Question: How do you design for better access?

Answer: Give disabled people the power to choose and change your design from the very beginning.

As designers, we indeed are experts in our field. But, we have to be careful that the double edged sword of “expertise” doesn’t lead to an exclusionary process. Designers are experts in space, but not all are experts in disability. What an inspirational solution from EVP and Design Futurist, AJ Paron, to allow children to impact the design decisions!

How can we move towards “universal delight” instead of “universal design”, which implies that we only need to comply with the standards but never go beyond them? What are your thoughts on this?

Exclusion runs deep. As designers, we have to explore our history and understand the root causes of why it happened in the first place. We must then unlearn the processes that have undermined belonging in our spaces.

Wow! What an incredible discussion on access, inclusion, and compassion. Sometimes you need to tear the floor out and start completely over like Contento did at their renowned restaurant to foster “belonging”. Other times, you need to “tear out the floor” of our design process and examine if there is some unlearning that needs to happen to make spaces truly equitable. I’m blown away at how powerful design can be.

If you missed it, don’t worry, the recording will be available soon! 😉
