Bruce Maxwell had achieved his lifelong dream: playing catcher in the big leagues, MLB. It took a lot of hard work for him to get there. But by 2017, he felt compelled to stand for an even bigger purpose and fight the rampant inequality seen all across communities of color. So he took a knee for the national anthem when he was playing with the Oakland As. He was the only player in baseball to do so. Now, Bruce is battling back to pro ball, representing his People in the get back and refusing to compromise his integrity.

Bruce is joining Edifye’s co-founder and executive director Pauly Jackson for THE BACKSTOP, a conversation series on sports, Blackness, mental health, civic engagement and political education. If you follow Edifye, you certainly already know about what Pauly stood for when his brother, fam and community needed solidarity. Needless to say, this is an exciting and organic fit. Episodes start dropping on all platforms in August!
