A NATION CONFRONTS ITS FAILURE

Today, Belize buries Angelita Magaña and her children, Shadia and Tishan, killed in a fire set by Angelita’s ex-partner. Their deaths expose a brutal truth: we are failing to protect our women and children.

As tears fall, the pattern repeats. We rage online, share hashtags, and wear shirts but none of that saves a life. Domestic violence continues because our response is shallow, reactive, and temporary.

A Facebook post won’t stop an abuser. A press release won’t shield a child. A slogan won’t save a mother trapped in fear. Real change demands action, not symbolism.

Belize has a system that moves too slow, punishes too lightly, and intervenes too late. And beneath that system is an even deeper problem, broken homes, poor parenting, absent values, and boys taught control instead of respect.

We need swift protection for victims, real consequences for abusers, counseling for families, and a moral code rooted in empathy and accountability. We must teach our children how to manage anger, resolve conflict, and value life.

Domestic violence is not “a private issue.” It is a national crisis. Until Belize treats it as such, we will keep burying the innocent and saying, “Enough,” while nothing changes.

As Angelita, Shadia, and Tishan are laid to rest, Belize stands at a crossroads: stay a country that only mourns or become a country that finally protects.

May their deaths force the change their lives never received.
