January 3rd, 2024 - Wau: Severe Starvation Threatens Millions in Three Western States of South Sudan
A looming crisis caused by foods shortage in Lake, Western Bahr Gazal, and Warrap State has prompted a mass exodus towards Juba, the capital of South Sudan. Cities such as Wau, Kuajok, and Rumbek witness an exodus of residents while experiencing an influx of people from rural areas.
Local leaders urgently appeal for humanitarian aid as millions face imminent starvation in the coming months. Concerns raised by the populace about floods, insecurity, and cattle raiding go unanswered by the local government. Deng Lual, a community leader, highlights the neglect of Greater Bahr Gazal by international organizations, attributing it to misguided assumptions based on the president's regional origin. He emphasizes that the government, including the president, fails to address the region's needs impartially.
The absence of healthcare services compounds the challenges, with Wau, once a healthcare hub, now grappling with shortages. Limited financial means force many residents, estimated at 5 million, to forego necessary medical care due to the inability to travel to Juba.
Mel Madit, a local resident, laments the pervasive insecurity disrupting daily life and hindering agriculture. He questions the government's control over Unity state and expresses concerns about conflicts between Twic and Ngok in northern Warrap. Mel criticizes the government's apparent indifference to conflicts between Apuk and Wau residents, posing critical questions about the governors' awareness and the president's involvement.
The people of Bahr Gazal express growing disillusionment with their government, feeling abandoned amidst security challenges from Unity and Abyie regions. Despite being a densely populated part of South Sudan, the region remains neglected by both the government and international organizations.
