WOMEN IN THE ARTS:

Portia Gumede: Concept Developer and Showrunner.

Portia Gumede, Mzansi's celebrated TV writer and producer, has given South Africa more reason to binge on television. Her portfolio includes Housekeepers, Sokhulu and Partners and Harvest.

And while this illustrious portfolio has afforded her power, Portia uses it to stand up against the industry’s infamous sexual harassment problem. In the wake of such allegations levelled against an unnamed male television actor, Portia took the steps to have him removed from an unnamed TV show - she fired him and wrote him out of the storyline. Her passion for justice has created a safer space for women in film and television. To her, we from The Crux say, Happy Women’s Day, Mbokodo.

WOMEN IN THE ARTS

Florence Masebe: Seasoned Actor and Storyteller.

It’s been 20 years since this powerhouse has graced our screens. Recently, she was the lead actor for the much-loved political telenovela, The Republic. She is mostly recognised from her days as an actor on Muvhango. Florence Masebe’s unrivalled talent and dedication to justice is what has put her on radar this Women’s Month. She uses her platform to speak up on matters such as gender-based violence and performance rights. She has taken to Parliament to fight for the introduction of a law that allows actors to own or share in their profits of the distribution of their work. Just like artists live off their royalties, she wants actors to enjoy the fruits of their labour. May her plight be heard by the people.

To her, we say Happy Women’s Month.

WOMEN IN THE ARTS:

Mmabatho Montsho: Award-winning filmmaker.

While Mmabatho Montsho enjoys a long list of accolades, her recent short film, Joko Ya Hao, reminds us why her work remains exemplary. Currently streaming on Showmax, this short film follows the story of a brave woman as she fights for justice in her church and community. In a recent IG post, she shares how Charlotte Maxeke was the inspiration behind the short film and its main character.

Montsho’s storytelling style is quietly powerful, reflective and impactful. We are waiting with bated breath for her next masterpiece. In the meantime, to her we say, Happy Women’s Month.

As this is the , our very FIRST issue of The Crux Magazine is centred around the theme of - literally translated from the Greek as the love of mankind.⠀

The media often details stories of formalized, 'Westernized' philanthropic efforts such well-known Foundations, trusts and charities. So we wrote a piece on and how that is informed by long-lasting African cultural values (think: black tax and helping out relatives and that one winter jacket that stayed in the family for years.)⠀

On our growing list of must reads is Sisonke Msimang's memoir: Always Another Country. Her love for her people and for Africa itself pours of from every single page. (Check out the review!) ⠀

We also profile Dr Precious Moloi-Motsepe - one of South Africa's most noteworthy philanthropists - as our in this month of love. (This woman loved us so much she brought us Beyonce.) ⠀
