Happy family day!

Family can mean so many different things: friends, community or just the place you feel at hone with yourself. As a very independent person, it can be hard to accept that we need each other. We cannot bypass the need for community. As Christopher McCandles found “happiness is only real when shared.”

REJECTION IS PROTECTION ✨⚖️⚠️

I first heard this brilliant phrase from . After a year (or two) of all of the things that didn’t work out, the cancelled plans, the disappointments, the let-downs, we need to remember that rejection is protection. How many of the things that didn’t work out turn out to be a way to avoid catastrophe? It’s hard to feel like something you thought you wanted isn’t meant for you … and then you realize it’s an absolute blessing.

We love feeling empowered and we hope you are inspired by the podcast to take control of the things you can (including your finances) and be grateful for the opportunities you missed. 🤍

Yes, another quote by our favourite Anais Nin (fun fact: since no one would publish a woman, she self published many of her own works). Nature reminds us it is really all about timing, wait too long and you may miss the moment.

When to save, when to spend, when to invest; it’s all a growth and harvest cycle. Since money is energy, we believe it’s part of that cycle and when spent (not foolishly) it can come back in many forms. This concept was beautifully articulated by real estate investor, Kyle Guthro in the Season 2 finale.

Proverbial quote moment 📔

We love this quote and HATE this quote because it’s always true. Especially with finances: if I had just tracked all year and kept my receipts together, taxes would be a breeze; or if I had just returned the purchases or subscriptions I didn’t really want right away instead of waiting; or if I just started investing earlier … so many so-called difficult tasks were once easy tasks that we didn’t do when they were easy and now they feel almost impossible.

It happens on a macro level too! We didn’t deal with our problematic relationship with money, nor did we clean up bad financial products during the 2008 recession … so here we are!

The best solution: see it now, see the hard work for what it is and put habits and systems in place so the easy tasks get done before they become hard work.

We love how Saijal Patel of talks about our economy and the recession in 2008 in this way. Listen to her episode from Season 1 “Wellness is Wealth”.

Industries like STEM, finance and, yes, cannabis still have so much stigma and a lack of representation for women. The truth is: women excel in these industries and a great example of this is cannabis brand CEO Trang Trihn from our Women in Cannabiz series from Season 1.

Proverbial quote moment⚡️

Investing in the stock market can feel a lot like “luck”. Which means a lot of “risk adverse” people (hint: especially women) choose not to invest. You may think you need to try to “time the market” (buy low, sell high). However, we know it’s more important to spend “time IN the market” because despite the ebbs and flows, over time that market has always gone up.

Time-weighted investing is a beautiful hybrid method to get the benefit of both. We loved hearing Money Master, Sandy Yong author of get so excited about the 2020 stock market crash and all of the money she poured in while prices were low. Was she lucky? OR did her *preparation* (having money set aside ready to invest) meet *opportunity* where stocks and ETFs were available for at a lower price. “Lucky” her!

We don’t see others as they are, we see them as we are. So it’s not so strange that we don’t really understand each other … but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t put in the effort. Since we’re all mirrors for each other, deep empathy and understanding are the next evolution for humanity and that starts with collecting the data.

Our award winning guest, Jackie Porter reminds us that there isn’t even proper data to understand financial racism. We want to understand better and support causes like the Black Opportunity Fund to combat financial racism.

In the hilarious season premiere Jackie and Leslie talk about how important it is to “get naked with your finances” so that you understand yourself better. Perhaps way we can all start to understand each other better.
