It’s winter time across the Appalachians which means it’s time to break out the small bugs and the small streamers. Winter can be a difficult time to fish for many, but it can also be incredibly rewarding. Some of the biggest trout you will see caught all year come during the November-February window. Pictured are several flies that are proven winter patterns tied by , but the list goes on as well. On nearly any given winter day midges, small frenchies, perdigons, eggs, and blowtorches can get fish in the net. Flies in the size 16-22 window will be the go to for most. Winter is also a good time for streamers as the brown trout shift into post-spawn, which is a time they will feed heavily to build up what they lost during spawn. So even on these cold days when you think there’s no way trout will be feeding, you’d be surprised to find they are. Chances are you will also be one of the only ones on the water. So don’t shy away from the cold this winter!
