Ortom deserves praise for speaking truth to power, says Middle Belt group
Middle Belt Movement for Justice and Peace (MBMJP) has said that Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State deserves commendation, not attack, for calling on President Muhammadu Buhari to take urgent steps to address the worsening insecurity in the country.
It cautioned that any attempt to vilify the governor would further confirm the fears that the Presidency had taken sides with armed herders.
The Convener of MBMJP, Joe Bukka, stated in Makurdi yesterday that those behind the media outing against the Benue governor had done more harm than good to the image of the Buhari Presidency.
His words: “We read the media statement by the three groups that came under the Friends of Buhari to vilify the Benue State Governor for recently advising Buhari to act fast to save the country from the activities of armed herders, who are gradually plunging this country into a major civil crisis.
“Our question is, what offence did the governor commit by that honest and timely advice? In the Middle Belt, we know Governor Ortom as one of the very few in this country who speak the truth always.
given his all, even to the detriment of his safety and well-being, to champion the call for ranching in Nigeria, which is gradually becoming a sing-song all over the country, deserves commendation and not vilification from any quarter.”The group warned that any media attack on Ortom, regarded in the Middle Belt as the only mouthpiece of the ordinary man in government, would be counter-productive, as it would further discredit the Presidency.
It pointed out that testimonies abound that the governor, aside championing the people’s cause, had delivered dividends of democracy to the people of Benue.
“Contrary to the claims of Buhari’s friends, Ortom has done so much in the areas of infrastructure, schools, roads, hospitals, electricity, water projects, payment of salaries and pensions as well as the provision of securityfor the people

COVID-19: FG urges women to apply for MSMEs grant

November 24, 2020 National Accord Newspaper

The Federal Government has urged female entrepreneurs to apply for its ongoing intervention grant for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) to enable them overcome challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Amb. Mariam Katagum, the Minister of State for Industry, Trade and Investment made the call at a news conference on the implementation process of the survival fund on Tuesday in Abuja.

Katagum, who is also the Chairperson, Programme Steering Committee, said the Project Delivering Office (PDO) for the scheme was receiving feedbacks from Nigerians since its registration portal opened on Sept. 21 for applicants.

According to her, the project, which will run for an initial period of three months, has provisions for 45 per cent female-owned businesses and five per cent for those with special needs.

She however noted that there had so far been low women enrolment on the scheme, and therefore called on state and local governments, and trade associations to mobilise women to apply for the grant.

The minister said: “There is need to mobilise more women because by the design of the programme, we are targeting 45 per cent of women beneficiaries and five per cent for those with special needs.

“I use this medium to encourage more women to apply, and we also urge associations to try assisting their members who do not have access to the internet.

“If you are a woman, apply and encourage others to apply because this money is there and we want to ensure that it gets to the targeted beneficiaries,” she said.

2023: Why Benue South should produce next Benue State Governor – Senator Abba Moro
The Senator representing the good people of Benue South Senatorial District, Comrade Abba Moro, has called on the people of the state to support a candidate from Benue Zone C to become governor of the state in 2023.
Senator Moro made the plea on Saturday during the Benue State Congress of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to elect state Executives of the party.
The Lawmaker urged political leaders in the state to pick courage and support someone from Benue South to become governor so as to build an all-inclusive Benue State.
Since Benue State was created in 1976, nobody from Benue South axis has been elected as governor, a jinx Senator Moro said should be broken in 2023.
He called on the five royal families from Zones A and B to support somebody from Benue South for governor in 2023.
His speech below;
“Today is unique because it sets a stage for a milestone and, therefore, let me seize this opportunity to thank the Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom, who tenaciously ensures some level of cohesion in PDP that makes it a formidable party and a party to beat in Benue State.
“Today, I stand on behalf of the good people of Benue South Senatorial District to say that as we set the stage and march towards 2023, the good people of Benue South asked me, if I come here, to say that they crave the indulgence of the Benue people to support somebody from the Benue South Senatorial District to become Benue Governor in 2023.
“In 2007 when some of us contested for governorship seat, we were under the impression that Benue had three zones and that since zones A and B had produced governors of the state, it was the time for Zone C to produce one.

Won’t Repeal Anti-open Grazing Law, Ortom Insists

editorAugust 18, 2020 10:30 Am

Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State yesterday insisted that no amount of threat, intimidation, or arm twisting will make him repeal the anti-open grazing law.

He raised the alarm that Miyeitti Allah is planning to foist violence on the state.

Ortom said these in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Terver Akase, titled ‘Miyeitti Allah planning to destabilise Benue’.

Ortom said his offence was his dogged stand against open grazing of animals in the state and his call for the declaration of armed herdsmen as terrorists.

The statement reads in part, “For Governor Ortom who had previously come under a series of threats even to his life from armed herdsmen and their conspirators, the latest plot by these enemies of Benue State is not an unfamiliar terrain.

“The governor says he is not intimidated or distracted by the antics of armed Fulani herdsmen and their sponsors. No amount of falsehood in the media or any other platform can change his commitment to selfless service to Benue people.

“The governor says for the umpteenth time that the state will not repeal the Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Law to pave the way for Fulani herdsmen to take over the people’s ancestral lands for cattle grazing. The Law has not only come to stay; it is fully being enforced.

“The Ranching Law has been well accepted by the people of Benue State and no intimidation or arm-twisting tactics from the named groups can change it.

“Governor Ortom urges security forces to check the activities of Miyetti Allah groups who have sworn on several occasions to foist violence on Benue, and bring their members to justice for their crimes against the people of the state.
