Neandertals (Also spelled Neanderthals, but pronounced the same) may have cared for a child with Down Syndrome. Honestly, I'm not sure why this is surprising or novel.

We have evidence of caretaking in other sources: The Old Man of La Chappelle is a good example. We have merged with "them" in a large portion of the world's population, therefore I hypothesize we were more similar than different, even culturally.

Individual’s survival into early childhood suggests a high level of community care

Walking, not hopping, giant kangaroos with posture more like a T. Rex than modern kangaroos. The early inhabitants of Australia would likely have encountered these. Can you imagine a 2 meter/6'6" roo?

Scientists are piecing together a picture of how Australia's extinct giant kangaroos moved.

DNA from prehistoric and modern-day people suggests that humans interbred with Neanderthals 47,000 years ago for a period lasting 6,800 years.

I mentioned some rebranding for The Kilted Anthropologist and here it is. I've expanded the channel beyond anthropology and suspicious species. More to come soon!

This is a sweet study, and I'm glad they did it. I do not think their findings are in any way surprising. Some bird species are very social and though responsible humans mean well, we can't meet the same needs other birds could fill. This is likely the same with any number of social pets we keep. Maybe my dogs need video chat friends, since one of them can't play nicely. 😁

Parrots preferred live Facebook Messenger exchanges to pre-recorded squawking.

Crabs: the body plan of choice.

Crab-like body plans have evolved independently at least five times. Biologists are still trying to figure out why.

It should go without saying that Neandertals (we now spell it this way because the TH is pronounced as a T) were as smart as Early Modern Humans. But we are still undoing more than 100 years of an unearned stigma placed upon their species.

The fact that Neanderthals were able to make a fire and use it, among other things, for cooking, demonstrates their intelligence. "This confirms our observations and theories from previous studies," explains Diego Angelucci, archaeologist at the University of Trento and co-author of the study.

Today I Learned..... Manatees have mammary glands under their arms......... and now you all know it, too.

It's a Fact!
The manatee's mammary glands are located behind the flippers. Mother manatees will nurse their calves from these mammary glands and they can swim while nursing, so they don't need to stop. They have mammary glands behind each flipper so they can potentially nurse two calves at once.
Calves depend on their mothers for 1-2 years before being weaned.

Horses did go extinct in North America around 10,000-ish years ago, but were reintroduced by the Spanish. Some were abandoned and roamed the plains, being adopted by Indigenous Americans before making contact with Europeans.

Students often learn in history class that the Spaniards brought horses to the New World in the 1500s, but the fossil record shows horses actually originated in North America at least 55 million years ago and roamed the continent before becoming extinct at the end of the last Ice Age, about 10,000 y

Never a dull moment in this field.

A new fossil ape from an 8.7-million-year-old site in Türkiye is challenging long-accepted ideas of human origins and adding weight to the theory that the ancestors of African apes and humans evolved in Europe before migrating to Africa between nine and seven million years ago.
