Seventy-eight years ago today, American troops landed on the beaches of Normandy.

For many of them, that dim view of a foreign shore—shrouded by mist and the fog of war—was their final sight on earth. They were young men from Virginia farms and Brooklyn streets, sacrificing their lives and futures to preserve for coming generations a set of ideals: Duty. Brotherhood. Freedom. Justice.

To our modern minds, their sacrifice feels foreign. Maybe even foolhardy. We’ve been taught that those ideals for which they died are a mirage. We’ve been taught that the American story is largely one of oppression. We’ve been taught that our national sins, grievous as they are, are more than defects in a good design: they are the design itself.

But on June 6, 1944, American boots touched the French sand not as oppressors, but as liberators. American blood stained the French sea not in self-interest, but in self-sacrifice. American sons eked out a foothold for freedom which would spread across the continent, reaching even the gates of Buchenwald and Dachau.
Every nation has a complicated history. But you can’t tell the American story without D-Day. Those men are part of who we are. Their ideals are still worth fighting for.
