This morning it was my privilege to get up early and workout with my son-in-law Solomon Farr to honor the memory of those who are no longer with us. The workout, "Murph" (in honor of Michael Murphy) starts with a 1-mile run, is followed by 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, and 300 squats. To wrap things up is another 1-mile run. Oh, and that's all done with a 20-pound weighted vest.

I scaled my workout. I did pull-ups (CrossFit "kipping style") for about half my rounds, then just kipped (kept doing pull-ups but didn't necessarily take my chin to the bar). I did most of my push-ups "regulation" but dropped to my knees for a few sets. The squats and runs I did, but I skipped the vest. I made it through 65 pull-ups, 130 push-ups and 195 body-weight squats. And ran two miles without stopping the first time in years! And all that coming from the ocean to a city over a mile high in elevation.

For me, this workout at altitude was a success.

Today, I set aside for a moment my Parkinson's and just focused on being a man pushing through a workout with the inspiration of those we remember and praise on this day.

Today, I shared a special moment with my son-in-law.

Saturday was supposed to be a rainy day, but God had other plans so sunshine it was. Doreen and I had an impromptu date and walked the beach then had lunch at the Newport Brewing Company. Awesome place and very close to home.

The "beach" required heading down several flights of stairs (good physical therapy for Doreen's knee, getting stronger every day) then onto a very unique surface. Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural area is where an ancient riverbed filled with lava after a massive volcanic eruption. The lava hardened in the river channel, then the ocean waves began chipping away. The chunks that fell were turned and polished in sea sand so now the beach is smooth, black pebbles and large rocks of lava.

No king waves today and the tide was in so no tide pools, but it still was breathtakingly beautiful and the few photos I snapped barely give it justice.

I sat cross-legged on the dark, round pebbles that litter the beach and watched spray-capped waves roll in. This shot captures the essence of the day - between the rugged yet colorful rocks, the bird family with balcony seating and the vibrating drops of water flung violently from explosive waves. "Nature's surround."

Some more sequences from my beach visit today while Doreen was in her physical therapy session:

- The waves are agitated off the shore
- Two people walk between the fresh water flowing from land and the salty spray of the sea
- The water is filled with surfers and their boards
- A surfer seems to float through the water
- A surfer comes to shore .... a bird takes flight ... a seal rests comfortably

Agate Beach has a few beautiful creeks that flow into the ocean. They are in well-defined channels and the surface of the water is a complex, vibrating texture. This series of pictures explores the edge of the river, and the transitions from river to beach and river to ocean.

Doreen needs to practice walking stairs, walking flat, and getting in and out of a car with her new knee. So, we drove down to the beach and enjoyed the sunset followed by a visit to the Fisherman's Memorial Sanctuary.
