IT IS RAINING IN MINDORO!

When it rains, it pours! The same is true with what happened in the 2023 Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) 2nd Season - Wesley So Cup for Mindoro Tamaraws!

After narrowly beating Surigao Fianchetto Checkmates on September 23, 2023, with a score of 12.5 - 8.5, the Mindoro Tamaraws repeated the score against the Camarines Soaring Eagles and continued to beat Arriba with a score of 15 - 6 on September 27, 2023.

Against the Soaring Eagles, the Tamaraws catapulted to an early lead by scoring 5.5 - 1.5 in Blitz Section with wins from Board 2 Joel Diaz, Lady AFM Cylliz Merilles, Senior Vicente Espolon, AGM Nezil Arj Merilles and Ronald Berdera.

In the Rapids, the Soaring Eagles fought gallantly with wins from FM Ellan Asuela against AGM Joselito Asi, NM Giovanni Mejia against Joel Diaz, and Senior Joel Buenaventura Sr. against Vicente Espolon. However, the Tamaraws relied on the wins of AFM Cylliz Merilles, USNM Rainier Labay, and Ronald Berdera. AGM Nezil Merilles sealed the Tamaraws' win with a draw against Coellier Graspela.

The Mindoro Tamaraws punctuated their win against Arriba Iriga with a blitz score of 6-1 and a Rapids score of 9-5 in the 2nd Match. Ryan Agbunag, AFM Cylliz Merilles, Senior Vicente Espolon, USNM Rainier Labay, AGM Nezil Arj Merilles and Ronald Berdera. AIM Jefferson Pascua failed to sustain his advantage against Fr. Emil Valleza in the Blitz, while Ronald Berdera succumbed to Ricarte in the Rapids Event.

This is the best start for the Tamaraws since the PCAP inception with 3 wins against 0 losses.

MINDORO TAMARAWS DEFEATED SURIGAO FIANCHETTO CHECKMATES

As advertised, the war between Surigao Fianchetto Checkmates against Mindoro Tamaraws went down the wire as it was decided in the very last game. Had John Ranel Marozo of Surigao defeated IM Liu Xiangyi, there will be an armageddon, but Mindoro Tamaraws import can not be denied. “I missed the tactics but still prevailed in the end.” Thus, Mindoro Tamaraws prevailed 12.5 - 8.5.

FM Julius De Ramos and AGM Nezil Arj Merilles blanked their opponents 3-0 each to give leeway for the Tamaraws. Then, Alexis Enaga was up to the task as Tamaraws Board 1 as he prevailed over Fianchetto’s Lennon Hart Salgados with a scentillating win in the Rapids. Surigao’s Lady Mariel Romero blanked AFM Cylliz Merilles while Senior NM Cyril Ortega and B7 Jaynard Cupas prevailed over Cesar Cunanan and Ronald Berdera respectively in the Rapids leading to the heart pounding final game decider.
