Archaeologists travel to some of the most interesting corners of the world. They spend months at a time digging important historical sites.

They undertake a large of amount of practical work to compliment their academic studies, and travel to discover new remains and sites of interest.

Archaeology is often performed as part of a university research team and will typically require a Bachelor’s degree in archaeology.

Courses contain large amounts of practical teaching so you can develop the hands-on skills you’ll need for the rest of your career.

A career in archeology is perfect for anyone who loves to travel, work with their hands and learn about ancient history and different cultures. It requires patience, practice and attention detail.

You could follow in the footsteps of John Wesley Gilbert who helped produce the first map of Eretria, an ancient city in Greece, and who taught 5 languages he learned over the course of his studies.

You could learn from the example of Dr Alexandra Jones, the founder of Archaeology in the community, an organization created to teach students about the importance of archaeology.

Another trailblazer is Dr Emuobosa Akpo Orijemie, a Nigerian archaeologist who is investigating ancient farming in West Africa.

Software engineers design and build the apps, computer games and streaming services that we all take for granted. They create innovative ways to use computers to solve problems, deliver content and make life that little bit better for everyone.

They are involved with everything from the initial ideas and brainstorming, right the way through to designing different options, writing the code and then testing what they’ve created.

Most software engineers have a degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering or related subjects. They have knowledge of several coding languages and an interest in solving challenging problems.

If you love to work as part of a team, are always coming up with new ideas and like the idea of working on some of the world’s most complex problems, software engineering offers a lot of options. You’ll need to be open to new ideas, willing to listen to critical feedback and able to learn new things quickly and efficiently.

You could be like John Stanley Ford who was IBM’s first black software engineer. Or you could follow in the footsteps of Makinde Adeagbo, the founder of devcolor, a community of black software engineers.

Pilots take to the skies in some of the most advanced planes ever built and get hundreds of people to their destinations, no matter where they are in the world.

They are responsible for planning flight routes, talking to air traffic control, communicating with crew and passengers and managing all the exciting challenges of landing at, and navigating, the world’s largest airports.

Anyone can train to become a pilot and achieving the necessary licenses requires a lot of dedication and time in the air. Pilots are some of the most well-trained professionals in the world and are constantly improving their skills and learning new and exciting things.

A career as a pilot is a great choice for anyone with attention to detail, focus and a passion for learning new things. If you love new challenges, working with people from all walks of life and want the opportunity to see the world, being a pilot is an amazing option!

You could blaze a trail like Eugene Jacques Bullard — the first African-American

Executive Producers manage film, TV, music, radio, theatre and podcast productions. They help decide on a marketable project and get funding. They manage the production schedule and hire the cast and crew.

Some only deal with production finances. Others are active participants in the production. Shona Rhimes, for example is an Executive Producer of Grey's Anatomy. She is also the creator and head writer.

There are no specific educational requirements to become an Executive Producer. Some may have a bachelor's or masters degree.

Executive Producers have excellent negotiation skills. They are experts at producing, marketing and distributing content.

Cartographers collect geographical information of places and events on the earth. They collect information from various sources. Examples are satellite images, aerial photographs, ground surveys and existing maps.\

Maps are a visual representation of the geographical information.

People use paper or digital maps to travel from one place to another. Navigation apps found on mobile phones and in cars are examples of digital maps. The famous London A to Z Street Atlas is an example of a paper map.

Governments can use maps to assist with public safety decisions
Services such as the fire brigade use maps to respond to emergencies.

There are various paths available to becoming a Cartographer.
Some Cartographers have a degree in Geography or Geomatics. Organisations also offer on the job training to school leavers.

This is a great profession for anyone who enjoys geography and has an interest in maps.

Barristers give legal advice and advocate on behalf of their clients in court. They also represent clients at tribunals. They gather evidence, question witnesses and present cases.

Barristers specialise in different areas of the law. A Barrister who represents a client in a criminal case is practicing criminal law. A Barrister who handles a divorce case is practicing family law.

Some Barristers study law at university for at least three years. Others study a non law subject and then do the Graduate Diploma in Law.

All Barristers have to do the BAR professional training course. They also have to do practical training under an experienced Barrister.
