Happy Wednesday!
Medical Update…
After lots of medical appointments I’ve been diagnosed with Hashimoto’s which is a thyroid autoimmune condition.
While it’s a relief to get a diagnosis, this only explains half my symptoms and more testing needs to be done. Normally I’m not bothered by my medical problems but I was not expecting to get a diagnosis and am frustrated that it doesn’t solve any of my problems.

To be honest I wanted to share this for therapeutic reasons more than anything. Sometimes we all have off weeks and that’s okay. You just try your best and keep going.

How’s your week been?

First BVM3 Notes Post!
So 3rd year is super intense but I’m loving the clinical content! I finally feel like a real vet student now I’m learning about conditions I’ll have to treat in practice.

I’m 4 weeks into the year and currently on my Alimentary strand. We visited this module in first year and I’m enjoying it a lot more this time round. This lecture was on Oesophageal Obstruction in the horse, a condition also called ‘Choke’. It’s an emergency condition as it affects a horses ability to eat and can have lots of complications.

How are you enjoying your year so far?

First in person practical today!
Today we had a practical about large animal clinical exams (specifically cows 🐮)
We established how to do a thorough nose-to-tail clinical exam and then got the chance to body condition score some live cows and monitor their vitals!
I really enjoyed going into uni but was a bit nervous around the cows as I didn’t manage to do a dairy placement last year. Hopefully I’ll learn a lot this year and I’ll be well prepared for my clinical placements in the holidays!

Loved my second placement this summer! I usually work as a VCA in the holidays and it’s always so much fun!

This summer I did 4 weeks of animal husbandry placements. AHEMS placements are a chance to gain and practice handling skills so that you are well prepared to start the clinical side of veterinary medicine.

This year I will have my animal-handling exam (DOPS) where I will be expected to have a variety of handling skills with a range of animals. I’m really nervous because I’ve not as had as much practice as I’d like but the university offers lots of revision resources which I will be sure to use! 🐄🐑🐓🐖🐈🐕

My 6th book this summer was All Girls by Emily Layden.
This was my second fiction this summer and it was a really nice read and a good break from non-fiction books.

The book portrays several young characters each navigating the year through an all girls private school.
I loved the descriptive imagery and related to many experiences having gone to a similar school myself.

Book Number 5…
I really enjoyed reading this book! It’s a mixture of the authors personal experiences and societal perceptions of women and motherhood.
I was really excited to read a book written by a South Asian author and I definitely felt like I connected to certain experiences mentioned in the book which I hadn’t be able to put into words before.
Would definitely recommend it!

Summer Book No.3: Room by Emma Donoghue
I don’t often read fiction but I really enjoyed this book. I read it all in one day and was on the edge of my seat the whole time.

While the overarching theme is sad and disturbing I loved that the book was written from a child’s perspective like ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ highlighting the innocence and hope children have.
Would definitely recommend and also would say read the book before watching the film! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Reflection time!

Today I found out my BVM2 exam results!! I was so relieved to find out that I got a Distinction and am able to move onto my 3rd year of Veterinary Medicine!!
This year has been one of the most challenging for me. I’ve struggled with physical and mental health and I’ve pushed myself further than ever before. I’m so proud of myself for achieving my goal of a 1st, but I also realise I need to learn to prioritise self care and preservation, as much as academic success.
My aim for next year is to not only to fight for my grades but also for my health and wellbeing.

Thank you to each and every person for motivating me to work hard and too not lose sight of the end goal, even when times are tough. I am so glad I created this account and hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
