Happy New Year, from your friends at !

Happy New Year has everything you could want or expect from a Bollywood entertainer.

It's a Farah Khan extravaganza to the hilt, replete with in-jokes, corny gags, maudlin sentiment, lavish settings, overblown song and dance numbers, spoof references to other films, a streak of patriotic fervor to rally the masses, a predictable climax and at its center Shah Rukh Khan, who holds all the chaos together.

Charlie (Shah Rukh Khan) plans a heist to frame diamond magnate Grover (Jackie Shroff) in a bid to avenge his dad's death. He contrives a plan to carry out the heist using a world dance championship as the backdrop and recruiting a group of incompetent cohorts to carry out Mission Happy New Year. Nandu (Abhishek Bachchan), Mohini (Deepika Padukone), Tammy (Boman Irani), Jag (Sonu Sood) and Rohan (Vivaan Shah) team up with chaotic results.

Happy New Year is pure, unashamed Bollywood. The kind of escapist cinema that entertains you so much that you don't even care that it makes little sense. It's not about dissecting the performances or considering the camera angles and the development of the narrative. It's unadulterated fun, which even prompted a respected director of independent cinema to gamely shed his inhibitions and his clothes just to be part of the mayhem. - Priya Joshi, Digital Spy

New post added at Movie Songs - 'Matargashti' | TAMASHA | Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika Padukone

Thanks to for giving us a translation for 'Matargashti': To stroll about aimlessly, be up to no good/mischief. Mixed etymology of Sanskrit, matar meaning peas and Persian, gashti meaning walking, walking round.
So literally 'matargashti' means 'to roll about like a pea'. - MovieSongs

Tamasha is a 2015 Indian romantic drama film written and directed by Imtiaz Ali. The working title of the project was The Window Seat. In an interview with The Indian Express, Ali mentions, "It’s that thought that crosses your mind when you are sitting by the window seat of a train and watching Ratlam go by and you think, what if I get down from this train? What life awaits me there?" He justified that outside this window, there is a mythical world where one can be what he wants to. According to him, the window seat gives one a chance to drop their present life story and become a brand new person.

Later the film was titled, Tamasha. (English: A grand show, performance, or celebration). The troupe played by Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone is one of the reasons for the film's title Tamasha as it refers to the Shakespearean monologue, 'All the world's a stage and all the men and women merely players'. The title of the film stems from the lines by poet Ghalib- "Hota Hai Shab-O-Roz Tamasha Mere Aagey" that translates to, "Your most personal thought is your life’s biggest Tamasha.

In an interview with The Press Trust of India, Ali outlined the generalised storyline, "You meet a certain person and you are very enchanted by him. He is free flowing and your type and then you lose touch. Years later when you meet, he is absolutely somebody else.

Ali went on to add that the film isn't autobiographical but has minor moments from his personal life portrayed onscreen. He was quoted saying, "Tamasha has that kind of love which makes a normal person extraordinary, which makes a commoner an artist. This is the kind of love through which you understand why you need a woman in life and how it takes you on a journey through which we identify ourselves."

'Matargashti' is in the voice of Mohit Chauhan, with the film score and soundtrack album composed by A. R. Rahman, and lyrics from Irshad Kamil - Edited from Wikipedia

'Aquarius' is #33 on AFI's list of the top 100 movie songs of all time.
The lyrics of this song (sung in the movie by Renn Woods) were based on the astrological belief that the world would soon be entering the "Age of Aquarius", an age of love, light, and humanity, unlike the current "Age of Pisces". The exact circumstances for the change are "When the moon is in the seventh house, and Jupiter aligns with Mars." This change was presumed to occur at the end of the 20th century; however, astrologers differ extremely widely as to when. Their proposed dates range from 2062 to 2680.

Hair is a 1979 musical war comedy-drama and film adaptation of the 1968 Broadway musical of the same name about a Vietnam War draftee who meets and befriends a tribe of long-haired hippies on his way to the army induction center. The hippies introduce him to their environment of ma*****na, L*D, unorthodox relationships and draft dodging.

The film was directed by Miloš Forman, cast members include Treat Williams, John Savage, Beverly D'Angelo, Don Dacus, Annie Golden. Dance scenes were choreographed by Twyla Tharp and performed by the Twyla Tharp Dance Foundation. The film was nominated for Golden Globe Awards for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and New Star of the Year in a Motion Picture (for Williams).

Both the film's plot and soundtracks were greatly changed from those of the musical stage play.

In the musical, Claude is a member of a hippie "Tribe" sharing a New York City apartment, leading a bohemian lifestyle, enjoying "free love", and rebelling against his parents and the draft, but he eventually goes to Vietnam. In the film, Claude is rewritten as an innocent draftee from Oklahoma, newly arrived in New York City to join the military.

In the musical, Sheila is an outspoken feminist leader of the Tribe who loves Berger as well as Claude. In the film, she is a high-society debutante who catches Claude's eye.

In the film, Berger is not only at the heart of the hippie Tribe but is assigned some of Claude's conflict involving whether or not to obey the draft. A major plot change in the film involves a mistake that leads Berger to go to Vietnam in Claude's place.

The musical focuses on the U.S. peace movement, as well as the love relationships among the Tribe members, while the film focuses on the carefree antics of the hippies. - Edited from Wikipedia

Michael Jackson was only 20 years old when he made his film debut in The Wiz. The first song that the King of Pop sings, 'You Can't Win', was originally written for the stage version for the Winkies to sing to Dorothy about the futility of escaping from Evillene. The song was cut from the stage version of the musical during previews but was included in the film as the Scarecrow's song.

Motown Productions bought the rights to the stage show with the intent of having Stephanie Mills reprise the role of Dorothy. However, Diana Ross lobbied intensely for the role. Despite the fact that everyone (including Motown head and former lover Berry Gordy) believed that she, being 13 years older than Mills, was too old, she insisted that the role of Dorothy was ageless. She also said she would be able to guarantee Michael Jackson as the Scarecrow if she was cast. -IMDB
Michael Jackson's Make-Up Artist for "The Wiz" Michael R. Thomas recalls memorable experiences with Michael on and off the set:
Every morning I began Michael’s make-up by applying a bald cap to keep his hair, which was in very small braids, in place. Next I would apply the foam-latex pieces: a forehead piece, two cheek pieces, a nose piece (which was supposed to look like a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup wrapper), a chin piece and a neck ruffle. They went on in the morning and had to be maintained during the day.

To remove the make-up at the end of the day, I would stand behind Michael, lift the back of the bald cap and peel it up over his head. The cap and the foam-latex appliances would come off pretty much all in one piece.

But then I’d duck down behind his chair so he couldn't see my reflection in the mirror, put the make-up (which now looked like a spooky mask) on my hand, slowly raise it up behind his head and jiggle it, going, “OOODLE-OOODLE-DOOODLE-DE-OOOOHHH!” He would laugh like crazy, as if it were one of the funniest things he'd ever seen. I really enjoyed his childlike sense of humor; I could say or do any dumb thing and it would get a big laugh. I would then remove the remainder of his make-up, glue and adhesives and that would be it. We’d go home and get ready for the next day's shooting. -Read more: http://www.truemichaeljackson.com/true-stories/stories-from-the-wiz/

For the next few weeks, we'll be posting Christmas MovieSongs to get you in the holiday spirit!

White Christmas was intended to reunite Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire for their third Irving Berlin showcase musical.
Crosby and Astaire had previously co-starred in Holiday Inn (1942) – where the song 'White Christmas' first appeared – and Blue Skies (1946). Astaire declined the project after reading the script and asked to be released from his contract with Paramount. Donald O'Connor was signed to replace Astaire. Just before shooting was to begin, O'Connor had to drop out due to illness and was replaced by Danny Kaye, who asked for and received a salary of $200,000 and 10% of the gross.

All songs were written by Irving Berlin. The centerpiece of the film is the title song, which won that film an Oscar for Best Original Song in 1942. In addition, 'Count Your Blessings' earned the picture its own Oscar nomination in the same category.

The song "Snow" was originally written for Call Me Madam with the title "Free," but was dropped in out-of-town tryouts. The melody and some of the words were kept, but the lyrics were changed to be more appropriate for a Christmas movie.

Playback singer Trudy Stevens provided the singing voice for Vera-Ellen, except for "Sisters", where Rosemary Clooney sang both parts. When the time came to record the soundtrack album, Clooney's contract with Columbia Records made it impossible for her to participate, therefore Peggy Lee stepped in. A soundtrack album with Crosby, Kaye, Clooney, and Stevens was not released until the recent CD anniversary reissue, in which the songs were taken directly from the film.

Within the film, a number of soon-to-be famous performers appear. Future Academy Award winner (for Bernardo in West Side Story) George Chakiris also appears as one of the stone-faced black-clad dancers surrounding Rosemary Clooney in "Love, You Didn't Do Right by Me". - Edited from Wikipedia

New post added at Movie Songs - 'Neendein Khul Jaati Hain' | HATE STORY 3 | Meet Bros, Mika Singh

'Neendein Khul Jaati Hain' is a party number composed by Meet Bros and hummed by Kanika Kapoor (of Baby Doll fame).
Karan Singh Grover typically hams it up with his signature facial expressions. Puja Gupta gyrates enthusiastically and tries to add oomph to the song. The song is designed to be a typical nightclub anthem, only time will tell if people lap up this song. 'Neendein Khul Jaati Hain' was shot in a popular night club in Bandra and Karan’s look and attitude in the song is inspired from Fifty Shades of Grey’s lead protagonist Christian Grey. Before watching the song we give would like to give you a creepy lyrics alert.

Hate Story 3 stars Sharman Joshi, Zareen Khan and Daisy Shah in lead roles apart from Karan Singh Grover. Needless to say, the film will have a lot of sexy, steamy scenes between the lead actors and looks loosely inspired by the Hollywood flick, Indecent Proposal. - Edited from bollywoodlife.com

20 years ago this month, the first 007 Bond film with Pierce Brosnan premiered.

The theme song, "Golden Eye", was written by Bono and The Edge of Irish rock band U2, and was performed by Tina Turner. The Swedish group Ace of Base were also involved at one point, producing a song also called "GoldenEye".

The song was written especially for Turner by Bono and The Edge when they learned that she had been offered to sing the theme to the upcoming Bond movie, and the track was produced and mixed by renowned British producer/remixer/composer Nellee Hooper, best-known for his work with Massive Attack, Madonna, U2 and Björk.

The Golden Eye theme became one of the highest-charting hit singles of Turner's career, reaching #10 on the UK Singles Chart and a Top 5 hit in most European countries. It was released as a cassette and CD single by Parlophone in the UK and Virgin in the US. Prominent DJ, David Morales, has performed a club remix of the song, while record producer Dave Hall has provided a more urban flavour on his remix, both versions were included on the European 4 track CD single.

"GoldenEye" was released on the original motion picture soundtrack and the following year it was included on Turner's album Wildest Dreams. - MI6-HQ

Beyonce and Jennifer Hudson. 'Nuff said.

"We're your Dreamgirls. All you've gotta do is dream, baby, we'll be there!"
Several different attempts have been made to produce a film adaptation of Dreamgirls, the Broadway musical loosely based upon the story of The Supremes and Motown Records, which won six Tony Awards in 1982. At one point, it was to be adapted as a star vehicle for Whitney Houston, who was to portray Deena. The production ran into problems when Houston wanted to sing both Deena and Effie's songs (particularly "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going"), and the film was eventually abandoned.

DreamWorks' Dreamgirls adaptation came about after the film version of the Broadway musical Chicago was a success at both the box office and the Academy Awards.

Pre-production began with the intentions of casting Jamie Foxx and Eddie Murphy, both actors with record industry experience, as Curtis Taylor, Jr. and James "Thunder" Early, respectively. When offered the part of Curtis, Foxx initially declined because DreamWorks could not meet his salary demands. Denzel Washington, Will Smith, and Terrence Howard were among the other actors also approached to play Curtis.

While director Bill Condon had intended to cast relatively unknown actresses as all three Dreams, R&B singer Beyoncé Knowles lobbied for the part of Deena Jones, and was cast after a successful screen test. Upon learning that Knowles and Murphy had signed on, Foxx rethought his original decision and accepted the Curtis role at DreamWorks' lower salary.

The most crucial casting decision involved the role of Effie White, the emotional center of the story. The filmmakers insisted on casting a relative unknown in the role, paralleling the casting of then-21-year-old Jennifer Holliday in that role for the original Broadway production. A total of 783 singing actresses auditioned for the role of Effie White. American Idol alumnus Jennifer Hudson was eventually selected to play Effie.

Hudson was required to gain twenty pounds for the role, which marked her debut film performance. To help her more fully become the "diva" character of Effie, Hudson was required to be rude and come in late both on set and off.

Beyoncé elected to lose weight to give the mature Deena Jones of the 1970s a different look than the younger version of the character.

Similar to the releases of older Hollywood musicals such as The Sound of Music, My Fair Lady, and West Side Story, Dreamgirls debuted with three special ten-day roadshow engagements. This release made Dreamgirls the first American feature film to have a road show release since Man of La Mancha in 1972.

Dreamgirls received eight 2007 Academy Award nominations covering six categories, the most of any film for the year, although it was not nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, or either of the lead acting categories. Dreamgirls is the first live-action film to receive three nominations for Best Song; previously the Disney animated features Beauty and the Beast (1991) and The Lion King (1994) had each received three Academy Award nominations for Best Song; Enchanted (2007) has since repeated the feat.

Diana Ross, long a critic of the Broadway version of Dreamgirls for what she saw as an appropriation of her life story, denied having seen the film version. On the other hand, Mary Wilson attended the film's Los Angeles premiere, later stating that Dreamgirls moved her to tears and that it was "closer to the truth than they even know". - Edited from Wikipedia
