ONEIDA NATION WISCONSIN - Statewide, 42 percent of Native Americans have received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine. This summer, several tribes in Wisconsin offered a $500 incentive for members and employees to get vaccinated. The Oneida Nation recently extended its Sept. 30 incentive deadline to March 2022.

While some progress is being made, COVID-19 vaccination rates for Native Americans and other communities of color still lag in Wisconsin.

ONONDAGA NATION - When Stephanie Waterman was working toward her doctorate at Syracuse University, a faculty member pulled her aside and showed her a textbook that said there were only four members of the Onondaga Nation left.

“We’re either invisible to the curriculum, ignored when we speak up, or hyper visible; having to speak for all Native people, all the time, on everything that has to do with Indigenous people,” Waterman said.

SENECA NATION - There are now 73 bison roaming the farm on Sunfish Flats in the Seneca Nation. The Senecas started by purchasing part of a herd in Machias three years ago. This spring, the Onondaga Nation sent an additional herd.

SIX NATIONS - Welby Isaacs, known as Ike, is the oldest living Indigenous veteran in Six Nations of the Grand River

"I thought maybe I wanted to be an architectural draftsman or something," the 82-year-old, who is Cayuga, told CBC Hamilton.

But if he had, he wouldn't have earned the name everyone knows him by now — Ike.

Welby Isaacs was a teenager living in Ontario's Six Nations of the Grand River when he joined the military. Known as Ike, he's now the oldest Indigenous veteran in the territory.

KAHNAWAKE - Following a landslide win last Monday, November 8, current Chateauguay councillor Eric Allard will soon be sliding into the position of mayor.

With a total of 6,350 votes, Allard garnered approximately 52.8 percent of the ballots cast in the elections for the city of 52,000 people.

As he celebrated this victory, the incoming mayor expressed an intention to further the betterment of the city’s relationship with Kahnawake.

AKWESASNE singer-songwriter Theresa Bear Fox has been making music in both Mohawk and English for twenty years. She says that melodies started coming to her when she was young, but that she didn’t start using them to write songs until she was in her early twenties. Now, Fox says that she feels called to share her music to uplift her community and encourage more people to learn Mohawk.
