“If we take the cost of each broom to be Rs 35, then the cost for procuring the raw materials to make it comes to Rs 15, cost of making its handle is Rs 6, and then putting it together is another Rs 6. This total amount of Rs 27 is given to the tribal who makes it", says Indian Forest Services (IFS) officer Prasada Rao who has come up with an ingenious (and cheaper) idea to solve the plastic pollution caused by discarded brooms -- bamboo handles!
Why this matters? Because in India alone, almost 40,000 metric tons of plastic is used for broom handles. And inevitably, all of them end up in landfills.
