Yesterday I had the privilege of interviewing Chief Gary Batton, Seth Fairchild (Choctaw Nation’s Executive Director of Cultural Services) and Sam Guerrero Stitt, sculptor and creator of the Eternal Heart monument for which we celebrated yesterday at Tushkahoma.

I also interviewed the lovely and talented Public Arts Manager at Choctaw Nation, Claire Green Young a couple of days prior, who shared about her time as a recipient of the Irish/Choctaw scholarship and completed her masters in Ireland. 👏🏽

A special thanks to Irish Heritage Trust, the Government of Ireland Emigrant Support Programme, the National Famine Museum Strokestown Park, and the Sharing Lands research group and other Irish entities who made this episode possible, as well as Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma!

The beautiful Eternal Heart sculpture commemorates the Choctaw gift from our people to the Irish during the Great Hunger. 💜 💚

I also had a opportunity to meet the Ireland Minister of State, Thomas Byrne who was one of several officials in town for the ceremony.

Stay tuned for this episode to launch soon!

I am so very proud to be commissioned by the Government of Ireland Emigrant Support Programme, the National Famine Museum, Strokestown Park, the Irish Heritage Trust, and the Sharing Lands research group to conduct a Native ChocTalk podcast at the Choctaw Labor Day Festival on August 30th at 1:00 pm cst!

This project will pertain to the unveiling of the Eternal Heart sculpture created by Choctaw, Sam Guererro Stitt. This monument is a companion piece to the "Sacred Feathers" sculpture in Midleton Cork, Ireland, in commemoration of the Choctaw monetary gift sent to the Irish during the Great Famine.

If you’re in Tushkahoma on August 30th, I hope to see YOU at the unveiling! And stay tuned for the episode to air this season.

I’d like to thank Choctaw Nation for providing support for this project as well – yakoke!

You may recall, I interviewed Sam Guerrero Stitt in Season 5, where he discussed the meaning behind the creation of his Eternal Heart monument. Check it out!

As a citizen of the Chickasaw Nation, BBE Artistic Director Brandi Berry Benson grew up looking at her great-great-great-great grandmother Pa I Sha’s portrait, a woman of immense strength who carried the Chickasaw reputation of “unconquered and unconquerable.” This musical work is inspired by Pa I Sha and highlights three major stories in Brandi’s Chickasaw heritage. Brandi (violin) is joined by Rachael Youngman (Choctaw narrator and vocalist), Leighann Daihl Ragusa (BBE Director, Native American flute, traverso), Vannia Phillips (viola), Erica Rubis (cello), and Michaela Marchi (indigenous percussion, Isleta Pueblo). Learn more about the BBE and The Story of Pa I Sha here.

See you there! 🤩

Stay tuned for Native ChocTalk’s Season 7 🦬 coming up soon, where I’ll interview the hosts of the interesting new podcast, Pretendians!

From the silver screen to the halls of governmental power, for decades, people have been falsely claiming to be Indigenous. So why do these so-called “Pretendians” do it? And what happens when they are exposed? On each episode of Pretendians, from Canadaland, hosts Robert Jago and Angel Ellis dive into audacious stories of Indigenous identity fraud.

Listen at https://link.chtbl.com/pretendians?sidchoctalk

What do some of the most prominent and successful Indigenous artists, leaders and professors have in common? They aren’t Indigenous. There are hundreds of cases of Indigenous identity fraud that we know about, and likely thousands that we do not. So why do these so-called “pretendians” do it? ...
