Dinah Washington, original name, Ruth Lee Jones, (born August 29, 1924, Tuscaloosa, Alabama, U.S.—died December 14, 1963, Detroit, Michigan), American jazz and blues singer noted for her excellent voice control and unique gospel-influenced delivery.

As a child, Ruth Jones moved with her family to Chicago. She sang in and played the piano for her church choir and in 1939 began to sing and play piano in various Chicago nightclubs, in addition to touring with Sallie Martin’s gospel group. About 1942–43 she adopted the stage name Dinah Washington.

From 1943 to 1946 she sang with the Lionel Hampton band and in 1946 began a successful solo career. During the period from 1949 to 1955, her recordings were consistently among the top 10 hits of the rhythm-and-blues charts. Her first hit song was “Evil Gal Blues,” and it was followed by such others as “Am I Asking Too Much” and “Baby Get Lost.”

She later crossed over to the popular (pop) music market, in which she had her greatest commercial success, notably with “What a Difference a Day Makes.” Washington continued performing at jazz festivals, however, and she retained many of her earlier fans because of her passionate supple style.

Why was Charlie Parker called "Yardbird?"

Both the music and the legend of Charlie Parker are frequently earmarked with the sax master’s nickname, “Yardbird” (or just “Bird”), one that’s always been used fondly by fans and friends alike. Trombonist Clyde Bernhardt (whom Parker dubbed “Cornbread” after a name mishap at a snooty party) recalled in his autobiography how Parker once told him that he “got the name Yardbird because he was crazy about eating chicken: fried, baked, boiled, stewed, anything. He liked it. Down there in the South, all chickens are called yardbirds."

Pianist Jay McShann (one of Parker’s bandleaders in the 1940s) recalled Bird’s adoration for chicken, too, and how that love once asserted itself during a tour in Texas:

"We were in two cars and the car he was in drove over a chicken, and Bird put his hands on his head and said, 'No, stop! Go back and pick up that yardbird.' He insisted on it and we went back and Bird got out of the car and carefully wrapped up the chicken and took it with him to the hotel where we were staying and made the cook there cook it for us. He told him we had to have this yardbird."

William James Basie
(August 21, 1904-April 26, 1984)

Where did Count Basie get his nickname?

The nickname “Count” came in 1936 while playing in Kansas City. Known then to audiences as Bill Basie, an announcer felt that Basie’s name didn’t live up to his talent like Duke Ellington and Earl Hines. Basie went along with the name choice and it managed to stick.

In all, Basie released three dozen studio albums, recording into the early ‘80’s. In 1959, Basie was the first African-American male artist to win a Grammy Award, taking home two trophies in the jazz category.

Ella Jane Fitzgerald
(April 25, 1917-June 15, 1996)

Her first on stage performance was at the Apollo during Amateur Night.
Ella's name was pulled out of the weekly drawing at the Apollo, and she competed during Amateur Night -- not a bad way to perform on stage for the first time! And, fun fact, she was actually planning only to dance that night, but changed her mind when she saw the Edwards Sisters at the show. According to Ella's website, she said, "They were the dancingest sisters around." Ella ended up singing Hoagy Carmichael's "Judy" -- after which the audience wanted an encore.
