This week let’s talk about the only surviving mummy in Leeds, United Kingdom. Let’s meet Nesyamun! Life Nesyamun was a priest from the reign of Ramesses XI, around 1100 BCE. His name means “the one belonging to the God Amun.” He worked in the temple of Karnak, which may have employed over 80,000 people at one time. Nesyamun was specifically a wab priest, which means that he reached a certain level of purification and was therefore permitted to approach the statue of Amun in the innermost sanctum of the temple....

This week let’s talk about the only surviving mummy in Leeds, United Kingdom. Let’s meet Nesyamun!
Nesyamun was a priest from the reign of Ramesses XI, around 1100 BCE. His name means “the one belonging to the God Amun.” He worked in the temple of Karnak as a wab priest, which means that he reached a certain level of purification and was therefore permitted to approach the statue of Amun in the innermost sanctum of the temple. He also held the titles of incense bearer and scribe.
Nesyamun and his coffins were donated to the Leeds Philosophical and Literary Society in 1824 by John Blaydes. In 1941 the Leeds Museum was bombed during the Blitz and the front half of the museum was destroyed. Two other Egyptian mummies were destroyed and Nesyamun’s inner coffin lid was blown out into the street. The mummy was remarkably unharmed.
Nesyamun died sometime in his 40s or 50s. Because of his job as a priest, his head was shaved. He had lost many of his teeth and there were splinters in his gums. His mouth was left open by the mummification priests, but it is unknown why they left it like that. The mummy has been studied extensively over the years.
In January 2020, Nesyamun made the news with a recent study about his voice. As a priest his voice would have been important, so modern scholars have used CT scans to print a 3D reconstruction of his throat and trachea. They were then able to create a noise for what Nesyamun’s voice may have sounded like.
Check out my blog post to learn more about Nesyamun and listen to his voice!

This week let me introduce y’all to a French Egyptologist who excavated a 5th dynasty pyramid. Meet Paule Posener-Krieger! Early Life Paule was born in Paris on April 18th, 1925. Her family was of Alsatian origin and her father was an engineer. In 1946, she took a full year of medical courses and in 1951 she received a “license es-lettres,” which is the French equivalent of a Bachelors of Arts....

This week let me introduce y’all to a French Egyptologist who excavated a 5th dynasty pyramid. Meet Paule Posener-Krieger!
She was born in April of 1925 in Paris. I couldn’t find much about her early life, but she completed a bachelor's degree in 1951, possibly in medicine. Paule then took an Egyptology course within the Louvre School, which obviously sparked an interest. She continued taking classes at the École pratique des hautes études in Paris. Her main research areas were hieratic and diplomatic paleography of the Old Kingdom, technical vocabulary and administrative practices of the Old Kingdom, and museum studies.
Paule’s greatest accomplishment was excavating the 5th dynasty pyramid complex of Pharaoh Neferefre in Abusir. Here she discovered the Abusir Papyri, which is a significant ensemble of documents dating to his reign, and statues of Neferefre, which are some of the best examples from this period.
In 1960, Paule married another French Egyptologist, Georges Posener. She became the director of the Institut Francais d’Archaeologie Orientale from 1981 to 1989. She also published several books and articles. She died in 1996.

This week let’s learn about a mummy with a tragic death. Let me introduce you to Takabuti, the mummy at the Ulster Museum in Belfast. Life Takabuti was a young woman living in Thebes during the 25th Dynasty. Her mother’s name was Taseniric and her father (whose name seems to be lost) was a priest of Amun. She held the title of Mistress of the House, meaning she was probably married to a middle-class or elite man....
