PROJECT BASA, stairway to success in reading
By Savannah Arellano

Reading is an important skill to develop because it is fundamental to a person to function in today’s society like assuming duties and responsibilities in a day-to-day activity. It develops critical thinking as it allows the learner to imagine, infer, predict, conclude and draw judgments among other skills.
Brigada Pagbasa as part Brigada Eskwela, is an after-school reading program that envisions bringing together education partners and experts to help all learners read and become functionally literate. The Brigada Pagbasa will serve as a platform to synergize efforts and resources to address education related challenges especially on literacy and numeracy. It will also create opportunities for all stakeholders to contribute possible solutions to the current gaps in the country’s education system, especially in equipping the learners with 21st century skills (DepEd Memorandum No. 48, s. 2021 entitled: 2021 BRIGADA ESKWELA IMPLEMENTING GUIDELINES).
PROJECT BASA (Batang bumabasa, Aaangat nang Sama-sama sa Adhikaing iisa) is intended to provide opportunities for non-readers to have their own tutor in learning reading through intensive and extensive procedure. It is an after-school reading program that envisions bringing together education partners and experts to help all learners read and become functionally literate. This is also a collaboration project among community people, stakeholders, tutors and parents of Barangay Ilijan.
Sir Jordan P. Dela Roca will serve as proponent and focal person for parents and learners and volunteer partners/tutors who willingly and generously extend their service and financial assistance to provide materials for this project.
In line with this, is a Project that support the Deped’s Brigada Pagbasa, the BASA (Batang bumabasa, Aaangat nang Sama-sama sa Adhikaing iisa). The word ‘basa’ means the way and procedure in making a learner knows the written letters and symbols. It also includes the practice, memorization and retention of those letters and symbols. In this, non-readers will become readers based from the materials and programs provided by the Department of Education and Ilijan Elementary School. Through adaption and implementation of Brigada Pagbasa, Project RADAR, Project GABAY and Project I-TUTOR, learning and reading will become strong and build a good foundation in reading.
Formation of this project comes from the result of pre-test for grades 1 to 3 learners wherein 17 learners from grade 1, 7 learners from grade 2 and zero learners from grade 3 are non-readers and the rest are all readers. This project also includes volunteers/tutors which are teachers and other interested members of the community. There will be a place in the barangay that will serves as the tutorial center.
The teacher will provide an orientation to teachers, parents of concerned learners about the process and their consent whether they agree or dis agree about the project. This will cater the needs the target learners to develop and learn reading.

Decision Matters
By: Mathew Gabriel A. Bool/Cartoon By: Kiet Venese Arellano

Learning takes place only if pupils tend to remember and learn more if they take notes, actively listening and attentively watching the teacher.
This pandemic tested the generation of learners wherein have been forced to go to school without going to school. Let’s face it, it really different to have to attend classes without being in a classroom. While online learning has allowed for a with students being able to see at least the faces of their teachers and fellow learners, it isn’t at all the same as being physically present in school, being in the same environment as your classmates.
The Department of Education (DepEd) and the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) have all been too keen on setting up limited face-to-face classes in certain areas, for a select number of schools, and in the case of colleges, for specific programs and degree courses.
Even vaccines are readily available across the country, there is still no cure, a remedy, or an over-the-counter pill for the infection. It will be very unlikely to achieve ‘herd immunity’ this year. As WHO warns, even if everyone has been vaccinated, the safety protocols still need to be observed—sadly, possibly, or unfortunately for the next years or decades that follow.
On the other hand face-to-face should be allowed, so long as the environment is safe for both students and teachers, meaning protocols are in place to keep everyone safe from catching COVID. The younger the student the more important it is for them to learn in person.
Despite these challenges, ILIJAN ES still pushes through with the face-to-face classes, facing the hindrances that await them in the hope for the better future.
