Shamokin, PA :Mike McLaughlin, a lifelong resident, local business owner (The Plumbing Outlet), and active community leader, is excited to announce his candidacy for Mayor of Shamokin. With over 42 years of experience in business and property management, combined with a deep commitment to the city's revitalization, Mike McLaughlin is dedicated to leading Shamokin toward a brighter, more prosperous future.

As a lifelong resident of Shamokin, Mike has witnessed both the vibrant days of the past and the challenges of recent years. "Our city has faced significant decline, but I firmly believe that with hard work, dedication, and forward-thinking leadership, we can reverse the trend and restore Shamokin to its former glory," said McLaughlin. "I’m not a politician, I’m a fellow citizen, frustrated with the status quo, and I want to see Shamokin move forward."

A Plan for Change and Accountability

Mike McLaughlin outlines several key priorities in his vision for Shamokin’s future:

City Cleanup and Fiscal Responsibility:
"We cannot attract businesses or investors if we don't show them that we are actively working to improve conditions in City Hall, our downtown, and our neighborhoods," he said. His administration will focus on restoring integrity, accountability, and transparency to city government.

Combating Blight and Improving Code Enforcement:
Mike is committed to increasing code enforcement and holding property owners accountable for neglected properties. "I believe we need to focus on enforcement rather than more tax dollars for demolition," he emphasized.

Strengthening Public Safety:
Working closely with the police department, Mike McLaughlin will ensure that law enforcement has the necessary tools and support to effectively maintain order and protect the community. He is determined to restore law and order to Shamokin.

Tax Accountability:
Collaboration with the city treasurer and tax collector will be a priority to ensure that the tax rolls are up-to-date and that everyone pays their fair share.

Proven Leadership and Community Commitment

In addition to his extensive business background, Mike has been a tireless advocate for Shamokin’s progress. He has served on various boards and commissions that directly affect the community, including:

City of Shamokin Housing Authority
Shamokin-Coal Township Joint Sewer Authority
City of Shamokin Mayor’s Advisory Board
City of Shamokin Zoning Board (Chairman and Vice Chairman)
City of Shamokin Mayor’s Blight Task Force (current member)
Shamokin City Council (unanimously appointed to vacant seat in August of 24)
He has also been deeply involved in youth sports, civic organizations, and local business initiatives, including serving on the board of Shamokin Area Businesses for Economic Revitalization (SABER) a local business group, and being an active member of the Why Not Shamokin movement, which works toward revitalizing the city.

Mike Is the son of Vera (Varano) McLaughlin and the late Joseph (Alphie, Buddy) McLaughlin. Mike and his wife Jen have been married for 34 years, and have two sons, Sean and Draven. Mike also has two siblings, a sister JoAnn and a brother Tim.
