Embracing The Power Of Artistic Influence

As the country gears up for the upcoming elections, there is a unique and powerful role that artists from various disciplines can play in shaping the narrative of change, peace, and transparency. Musicians, poets, designers, dancers, models, and individuals from diverse creative realms possess an extraordinary ability to influence hearts and minds through their art. This season, it's imperative for these creative souls to recognize their potential as agents of change and utilize their media platforms to advocate for a harmonious and transparent electoral process.

The Artistic Voice as a Catalyst for Change

Art has always been a mirror reflecting society's nuances, and artists serve as interpreters of the collective conscience. Musicians, with their melodies and lyrics, have the power to create anthems that resonate with the public, fostering a sense of unity and purpose. Poets can craft verses that inspire reflection and critical thinking, urging citizens to engage in the democratic process with informed minds and open hearts.

Designers and Models: Visual Storytellers for Transparency

Designers and models can visually communicate complex ideas, making information accessible to a broader audience. In the age of social media and visual storytelling, compelling graphics and 3D models can distill intricate political concepts into digestible visuals. By harnessing their skills, these artists can contribute to the dissemination of transparent and unbiased information, empowering citizens to make informed decisions.

Dance as a Symbol of Unity and Harmony

Dancers, through their movements, embody emotions and narratives. Dance has the power to transcend language and cultural barriers, serving as a universal language of expression. By choreographing performances that celebrate unity, diversity, and the importance of peaceful elections, dancers can inspire positive sentiments and a collective commitment to fostering a thriving democracy.

Embracing the Responsibility

As agents of change, artists must recognize the responsibility that comes with their influence. Whether in the recording studio, on stage, or in the design studio, the messages conveyed must prioritize peace, understanding, and the call for transparent governance. This is not about endorsing specific candidates but about championing the values that underpin a healthy democracy.

Utilizing Media Platforms for Advocacy

Social media, streaming platforms, and other digital mediums offer a vast canvas for artists to amplify their messages. Musicians can organize virtual concerts promoting unity, poets can share spoken-word pieces advocating for informed voting, and designers can create shareable graphics emphasizing the importance of transparency. By leveraging their media platforms, artists can reach a global audience and spark conversations that transcend borders.

So this season presents a golden opportunity for artists across various disciplines to become catalysts for positive change. By using their creative prowess to advocate for peace and transparency, musicians, poets, designers, dancers, modelers, and others can contribute to shaping a future that reflects the collective aspirations of a society yearning for progress and unity. As the curtains rise on the electoral stage, let the artists take center stage in leading the charge towards a brighter and more harmonious future.

Investing in Talent:
A Plea for Fair Compensation in Our Music Industry

As we bid farewell to another year in South Sudan's vibrant music scene, it's time to address an issue that weighs heavily on the growth and prosperity of our artists. I'm taking a stand and raising my voice against the prevalent trend of underpaying artists, a practice that hinders not only individual musicians but also stunts the overall development of our industry.

In stark contrast to our Ugandan counterparts, where promoters understand the value of investing in artists, South Sudan often sees performers being offered meager sums such as 100, 200, or 300 USD for their hard work. This disparity is more than just a financial matter; it's a barrier to artistic growth and a deterrent for aspiring talents.

Consider this: when promoters pay artists inadequately, it sends a message that their craft is undervalued. As an artist who has turned down numerous offers of 300 and 500 USD, I am not only standing up for myself but for all artists who deserve better. These low payments not only reflect a lack of appreciation for the artist's skill but also create a ripple effect, discouraging potential audiences who can sense the frustration and dissatisfaction within the creative community.

I have personally halted events, parties, and concerts, not only as a form of protest but also as a demonstration that we, as artists, deserve fair compensation. It's a plea to promoters to recognize the hours of dedication, creativity, and passion that go into crafting music. Without adequate compensation, artists cannot invest in their own growth, hindering the evolution of our entire music ecosystem.

It's time for a collective awakening. Artists, know your worth. Understand that your talent contributes significantly to the cultural fabric of our nation, and you deserve to be rewarded accordingly. Promoters, I implore you to reflect on the long-term benefits of investing in our artists. By providing fair compensation, you not only empower individual musicians but contribute to the flourishing of South Sudan's music industry as a whole.

As we approach the dawn of a new year, I call upon all promoters to reevaluate their payment structures. Let's make 2024 the year when South Sudan's music industry flourishes, not just in talent but also in financial recognition. Together, let's build an environment where artists can thrive, audiences can enjoy quality performances, and our cultural identity can be celebrated with pride.

Lil Jay was one of the pillars that made Coozos Clan a force to be reckoned with

By Lawless YB

Little Juuk written as Lil Jay known by family name as Juuk Mayiik or Juuk Amer Mayen was taken from us by surprise from that ill-fated Pageri ambush that saw armoured military truck packed with troops of the famously resilient Jesh Shabi who could go months without salaries and never complained however when duty calls, defending the territorial sovereignty and integrity of our nascent nation become a duty without any sick report.

A price as to be paid to defend a land that has bones of her sons and daughters burried less than an inch below the soil and scattered all over the corridors of the world.

Lil J one of the pillars and a corner stone husky dancehall superstar was arguably ahead of his time.

Juuk was literally the youngest and was the back bone of the Clan base as asserted by Menimen on many occasions.

The Coozos Clan are part and integral of the south Sudan pre and post independence music evolution in the republic.

If you can't remember and sing along Binia Juba and Ketenge by a group that has accumulated accolades with clean records of smash hits back than and now, than you are one of those who is bent on calling South Sudan Southern Sudan and Doctor as Diktor.

Albeit Menimen and Cool Bush were more of rappers back than, Lil Jay and Singer Mike the melodic voice behind many hooks never switched to any genre apart from singing.

You may be wondering as to what could've compelled such a promising musician in the land to even think about joining the dreaded former SPLA (Proper) with less military warfare exposure though a war child who's used to waking up to a breakfast of shellings and an Antinov aerial bombardments, well the question lies in the lack of motivation and recognitions toward artists hard-work that goes unnoticed on many occasions.

We are living from hand to mouth and music that's yet to be regulated can't make both ends meet and to supplement for the meager income, many musicians tend to look around for greener pastures in any given organs of the government or (N)NGOs.
